Fast SSD storage is key to the Unreal Engine 5 demo's super detailed scenes

I couldn't get any exact specifications from Epic, but on a conference call earlier this week I asked how an RTX 2070 Super would handle the demo, and Epic Games chief technical officer Kim Libreri said that it should be able to get "pretty good" performance. But aside from a fancy GPU, you'll need some fast storage if you want to see the level of detail shown in the demo video.

That doesn't mean that old HDDs will be unable to handle UE5 games and their billion-polygon "film quality" assets. The idea behind UE5 is to let developers import the highest quality assets they have, and then automatically scale everything to fit the hardware being used, all the way down to phones.

"You could render a version of this [demo on a system with an HDD], it would just be a lot lower detail," said Sweeney.

They specifically stated it was in-engine. In the UE4 4.25 update they end the highlights article with a paragraph on ray tracing, stating:
Finally, with this release, real-time ray tracing is now also officially production-ready! From games, films, and broadcast to automotive and architectural visualization, ray tracing enables you to achieve new levels of believability in your real-time projects.
Then in line with previous paragraphs followed by images demonstrating each feature, they show a gallery of what appears to be RT showcase images, including Hellblade II...

Anyone downplaying this is fanboying, simple as that. Of course it doesnt mean we will get actual games that look like this, we have seen thess Unreal Engine tech demo's before. I hope we do get games like this though, although how expensive and time consuming making a game that looks like this, well there wont be many of them, thats for sure.
Guys, dont you think with such amazing graphics developers vision will be limited mainly with their money investment rather than hardware? How many developers would have to work in order to build entire game with such graphics fidelity? 1000 people if not more?

My understanding is that it will be quite the opposite due to the nanite pipeline. Raw photogrammetry can be used without manual reduction of detail. Original models from sculptors without cleanup/ considerations for polygon budget. No need for normal maps. All this adding up to a lot of time that can be used elsewhere.

It's not helpful for him because he just wants to war and that means twisting what phrases mean. Pretty good has never meant as good, like if I asked how the PS4 version of RDR 2 fares compared to the PC version you could say "pretty good" and not be wrong to do so.

While this did look impressive it was at 1440p with no ray tracing at 30 FPS...
At least it's not a 1600P 24fps movie mostly showing closeups of the onscreen character and limited environmental detail under scrutiny due to lots of blur and a dark setting. Similar to how the N64 hid it's texture compromises with Fog. What we have here can be broken down with confidence, it's actual gameplay for one, you can pan the camera full tilt and inspect the details, the character, the DD, it all holds up, nothing here is bushelled up. That's why I say, show me rather than tell me..... This UE5 engine is like a girl showing you they love you through action, whilst the other one says it, but you ain't seeing it. The latter talks a good love game though...

he was the most vocal but not the only one, i don't wanna say names tho.

i mean, maybe with 3000 dollars pc you can improve stuff like framerate, resolution, distance grass render or stuff related to shadows with ini editing but the overall graphical impact of horizon 2 is gonna be noticeably better.
i don't care if i can see the shadow casted by the asshole of a thunderjaw 100 miles away when a thunderjaw in horizon 2 is gonna be far more detailed and better animated and probably dinamically destructible (fingers crossed for the last one)

Yeah I read that article earlier.

It's funny as fanboys were saying this can only be done on ps4, proven wrong.

They then say it will be reduced visuals on pc, no proof

Are developers not using dedicated system memory going forward into this generation?

I'm surprised manufacturers aren't pushing for new PC hardware, and removing dedicated memory already, so they can match consoles superior design. Or is there a reason the fundamentals of PC hardware isn't changing, because they operate completely different, and don't have to rely on solely vram? Makes you wonder.

Would the inclusion of SmartShift push the engine further?

I believe Square Enix teams will be working with two game engines next gen.
The Luminous Productions crew will be working with the next iteration of Luminous Engine while other teams (FFVII Remake + Kingdom Hearts) will be utilizing Unreal Engine going forward.
They're beginning to grace that line close to Visual Works in realtime. Both the cinematic and gameplay character models in FFVII Remake had amazing detail and animation quality, and If Square Enix can somehow better manage their production cycles I'm sure they'd pull it off.

I'm eagerly anticipating Final Fantasy XVI.

definitely shouldn't assume that demo would cause stuttering on ANY PC RAM configuration. That would be a gross miscalcuation on your part.
Maybe not that demo but a 100GB city will stutter for like 10 minutes while the ram loads up its cache.
But I assure you that this demo is running on the PC.
Also on android. We should get further details on the minimum ssd specs in the near future

What we will say is that if nextgen sony games have this level of detail they look better than existing pc games. You were saying that would not be the case.

So Epic is lying? Because the demo was about to take advantage to increase detail according with the SSDs speeds.
Faster speeds = more detail on screen.

Epic is not lying. It’s the SSD + custom architecture for pulling data from the SSD and decompressing them quickly.
But you’re right, it is about speed.

Looks great, I hope more studios can generate these high quality assets easier otherwise I'm sensing that this level of quality will be reserved for only the largest of AAA budgets.

You cant compare those to this. Both of those were just pre-rendered trailers.
This was a real-time demonstration. You can look at it as a playable level from any other game. Sony's 1st party games will even be better than this down the line.

The Zelda demo was a real-time demonstration as well.

But CPU/GPU is still a big piece of the puzzle, right? Don't you need CPU power to handle this kind of decompression and whatnot?
In that case from what I understood the assets are being displayed directly without need to use CPU/GPU... these are just rendering the graphics like usual.
BTW the decompression is not doing by the CPU/GPU on next-gen consoles... they have dedicated units.

I will find the quotes.

You do realise that UE5 is not exclusive to the ps5 ?

And I say it's not. The GPU isn't directly indexing texture lookups from virtual RAM that's represented in the SSD. It's too slow. The GPU is indexing texture lookups from the VRAM. The SSD is just a fast cache for the VRAM. Data is flowing to the VRAM and then GPU reads from there - not directly from the SSD. PC has 2 pools of RAM - CPU and GPU. That can be any configuration. My own personal PC has 64G of RAM and then my 2080Ti has 11G of VRAM. I bet anything I can run that demo with my HDD-equipped PC.

Are stating that the PC can't run this demo? I say it can run this demo and run it better (4k/60FPS). I'd love to know how much RAM this demo costs and I wish they would release it to the PC owners so they can play with it. Probably one day..

Yeah, and now let's assume that this demo uses 30GB of assets (not necessarily unique assets, but you get what I mean). It means that for you to load the game from your HDD to your ram it will take a few minutes. Correct?

i think he base his opinion on current gen games, ue4 games are not better looking than proprietary engine games, not only from sony of course, rdr2, re3 remake, tlou2, metro exodus or tushima looks better than gears5 and days gone, arguably the best ue4 looking games of this gen (maybe i forget some other games but you get the point)

he probably think that if ue4 can't beat decima or capcom engine, the same si gonna happen with ue5 vs upgraded proprietary engines.

not saying that he is right, but many people probably have this perception right now.

This is not about deciding personally which engine makes a game "look" better. That's entirely subjective. This UE5 demo displays some new tech and is used in this demo. It has nothing to do with the art direction or talent of the team in putting this demo together. For him to dismiss the efforts of a company who paves the way for new tech on a multiple platform graphics engine is a complete disservice to the team. It shows a bias and outright prejudice if you ask me. He's basically saying that no matter how good another company that's NOT a 1st party company makes their graphics engine, ONLY a 1st party company can make it better. What kind of BS is that? If ND got Epic's paper and implemented this Nanite feature, does ND get the credit for it if their team is able to make a artistically better looking game? Or does Epic get the credit for doing the R&D on it and making it possible? I say Epic gets all the credit for the technique and the tech behind it.

I just watched it and this is my opinion.

I went in expecting the typical CGI trailer but it was actually a gameplay demo. The visuals are really impressive and im extremely excited for next gen to start. This is what happens when you focus on next gen systems and don't take into account previous ones.

I am really hoping to see more next gen stuff from Sony really soon.

There is GPUDirect Storage from nvidia.

Any chance this is based around Direct Storage? Naming convention is very similar and Nvidia GPUs already leverage some DirectX 12 Ultimate features even ahead of AMD GPUs IIRC.

TBF if someone told me this was a Horizon sequel demo slice with a friend of Aloy's I'd believe it.
