DF Direct: PlayStation 5 / Unreal Engine 5 Reaction - Now This Is Next-Gen!

Unreal Engine 5? PlayStation 5? It's real, it's happening, and it's simply amazing. Alex Battaglia and John Linneman sit down to discuss the phenomenal new technology.

Note: The PS5 UE5 tech demo runs with dynamic resolution scaling and temporal upsampling. Typical rendering resolution is 1440p but it does vary. Read more in Rich's web article, with more detailed info direct from Epic Games: https://www.eurogamer.net/articles/...xt-gen-unreal-engine-running-on-playstation-5

We've spent a long time poring over a range of 3840x2160 uncompressed PNG screenshots supplied by the firm. They defy pixel-counting, with resolution as a metric pretty much as meaningless as it is for, say, a Blu-ray movie. But temporal accumulation does so much more for UE5 than just anti-aliasing or image reconstruction - it underpins the Lumen GI system.

Summary:

- “Lumen in the Land of Nanite,” a real-time demo running live on PlayStation 5
- John mention this is kinda of they normally looking for next gen
- New tech bases
- Two new technologys: Nanite and Lumen
- Lumen is a fully dynamic global illumination solution that immediately reacts to scene and light changes
- While Nanite virtualized micropolygon geometry frees artists to create as much geometric detail as the eye can see
- John answer 'why' this is next gen
- You can import row data.
- 'The ideia is you can import super high detail model direct to the Unreal Engine 5'
- REYES (Renders Everything You Ever Saw)

meh, same like this gen, but a few more polygons and better textures. that's it. not impressed at all.

Well, you could try watching the video he posted. Just saying. Or if you did, at a speed less than 3x.

"We don't have performance comparisons, we can't share performance comparisons, but this is a feature set you can count on with that generation, particularly micro polygon geometry with the Nanite technology and real-time global illumination with Lumen."

"Not just a little bit faster but a lot faster, so that you can bring in this geometry and display it, despite it not all fitting and memory, you know, taking advantage of next generation SSD architectures and everything else... Sony is pioneering here with the PlayStation 5 architecture. It's got a God-tier storage system which is pretty far ahead of PCs, bon(?) a high-end PC with an SSD and especially with NVMe, you get awesome performance too."

Not sure what bon means, maybe it's a typo of But? So he emphasizes the need for an nvme drive, which XSX has a very competent implementation of.

details? everything?

And you didnt even watch the video haha, they go outside in the end.

Some people just cant be pleased, if you dont see how this is really next gen vs current gen.

what do you expect, movie quality real life worlds rendered in real time at 8k?

Its up to Microsoft. They can request the same tech demo from Epic Games, unless Sony made a deal just to secure this particular tech demo, but I can see Microsoft making this demo running at seX.

I would bet that MS will get a tech demo of UE5 running on XsX out there pretty soon. It's not like this is a PS5 exclusive. When that happens I am sure DF will breakdown any differences they see, though I am not sure the demo will show differences in the SSDs or not...

All just guessing on my part

WTF? That looked amazing...

And not needing Ray Tracing to pull that off is a GOOD THING.

Unless AMD has some crazy tricks up their sleeves RT is going to be a framerate killer this gen.

I think the impressive thing is not the graphics quality (it is a tech demo afterall), but the huge improvement in terms of work especially when delivering to multiple targets, because the engine automatises optimisation processes that would otherwise be a lot of manual work.

summary if possible ?

here is the meatiest bits of the article, IMO

That changes today with Epic Games' reveal of Unreal Engine 5, accompanied by an astonishing tech demo confirmed as running in real-time on PlayStation 5 hardware. The promise is immense with the quality and density of the visuals on display almost defying belief. Imagine a game world where geometric detail is unlimited, with no pop-in and huge draw distances. Now picture this unprecedented level of fidelity backed up by real-time global illumination that's fully dynamic.

With Unreal Engine 5, Epic is looking to free developers from the constraints of poly counts and draw calls, to allow artists to simply drop in their full-fidelity ZBrush models and photogrammetry data. There's no need for simplifying models to hit performance targets, no need for LOD generation

The 'Lumen in the Land of Nanite' demo includes a close-up on a statue built from 33 million triangles with 8K textures. It's displayed at maximum fidelity within the scene, with no developer input required. Moving into the next room, the demo wows us with almost 500 of those same statues in place (485 to be precise), all displayed at the same maximum quality. That's 16 billion triangles in total,

it's the engine's job to determine exactly what pixels need to be drawn in order to display it. It doesn't mean drawing all 10 billion polygons every frame because some of them are much, much smaller than the pixel. It means being able to render and an approximation of it which misses none of the detail that you're able to perceive and once you get to that point, you're done with geometry.

"A number of different components are required to render this level of detail, right?" offers Sweeney. "One is the GPU performance and GPU architecture to draw an incredible amount of geometry that you're talking about - a very large number of teraflops being required for this. The other is the ability to load and stream it efficiently. One of the big efforts that's been done and is ongoing in Unreal Engine 5 now is optimising for next generation storage to make loading faster by multiples of current performance. Not just a little bit faster but a lot faster, so that you can bring in this geometry and display it, despite it not all fitting and memory, you know, taking advantage of next generation SSD architectures and everything else... Sony is pioneering here with the PlayStation 5 architecture. It's got a God-tier storage system

But it's Sweeney's invocation of REYES that I'm particularly struck by. The UE5 tech demo doesn't show extreme detail at close range, it's also delivering huge draw distances and no visible evidence whatsoever of LOD pop-in. Everything is seamless, consistent.

And to prove the point, the UE5 demo running on PlayStation 5 mostly uses full fidelity assets taken from the Quixel Megascans library - not the more simplified versions designed for video games using 8K textures.

Yeah this was running at 1440p/30 and seeing how RT and can half performance on Nvida cards with tons of RT hardware, I think the feature won't be very common on next gen games

Finally, unlimited foliage render distances! Can't wait! So impressed!
Can you imagine if they get foviated rendering into PSVR2?

Next gen is also about having the same things but better.
I think he's full of salt TBH.

why salt? this is unreal engine, will be the same on all nextgen consoles and pc lol
and its only 1440p/30 lol and same 30fps "cinematic" feel.

did you even see the reaction of most people? "I thought this is the new tomb raider!" lol really? so much for "nextgen".
I was promised COMPLETE NEW GAMES, that haven't been able to be delivered in currentgen due to the missing SSD.

For example:
The Medium is a true nextgen game, because in current gen we arent able to have basically TWO different worlds at ONCE, and where you can switch between those, this is something new and not the same but shinier.

this is what I was expecting, this would be true nextgen to me, now yeah, looks shinier, better dust and all, but true nextgen? not really

The fact that epic choose to show this 1st glimpse of their engine running off of playstation 5 is very telling, so take that how you want. And before people say oh they were shilling for sony.... yea they were definitively shilling but it was for themselves. Looks good epic, and ill be buying a ps5 day fucking one. I cant wait to see what sonys own proprietary engines look like in the future.

i will always keep the same stance.
i like what what the medium is on paper but they need to show the receipts !

Probably just a verbal hiccup while saying the words "but on"

You do realize that was a Inside Xbox 3rd party show only. They have not yet done their reveal. And they still showed Medium, Scorn and Bright Memory Infinite.

While the next Madden that we saw at the Xbox show looks like a early xbox one game with zoomed in camera to try and make it look better.

This looks way more next gen...
I really want an improvement on AI, NPC and interactive worlds this gen

uhm? this is an engine... that will run even better than what you see there on Series X.

so I don't see how this is relevant?

they most likely chose the PS5 hardware to show it on so you have an idea of the baseline performance of next gen.

this is 1440p30fps... imagine this running at around 1600p30fps and you have yourself an Xbox Series X demo.

I'm afraid 1080p/30+RT, 1440p/30 gonna be a thing next gen, i was expecting more tbh.
Finally some next-gen. I doubt games will look like this, but anywhere near this will do as well!
I hope it's more than this.

I want that improvement too but this was a tech demo, polished to its best. There is no game. Dont get sucked in until you see a real game with those visuals.

It's all good man. I'm just playin. I'm just excited for next gen after seeing what's capable. MS couldn't show us this a few days ago IMO, but it looks like next gen is going to be amazing for both consoles. Good times man.

Probably because Madden 21 is cross-gen.

But the biggest thing that nobody is talking about here is that UE5 supports future porting. Taking a game from UE4 to UE5 is incredibly simple. And that's insanely big news that's not really being focused on. I know this isn't a really big thing for consumers, but in the end, porting games on future engine tech is a big thing to get a game out quicker, more reliably. That with all the new graphics tech, I can't wait to see the first wave of UE5-exclusive games.

Its a fucking tech demo... Them graphics cant be made on ps4p or xonex. Hence next gen graphics/physics/sound.

Does that compute?
