PS5, Xbox Series X or Both May Be Delayed Due to COVID-19, Says DFC

https://wccftech.com/ps5-xbox-series-x-or-both-may-be-delayed-due-to-covid-19-says-dfc/

Coronavirus is getting all the headlines and we suspect the phenomenon isn't dying down anytime soon, as much as we'd like that to happen. The latest news comes from a fresh DFC Intelligence report, issued recently by the games industry research firm established in 1994.

According to DFC Intelligence, there's a very real chance that one or both the next-generation consoles from Sony and Microsoft, the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, will miss their scheduled Holiday 2020 release window due to supply chain issues caused by COVID-19.
Coronavirus is likely to have a major short-term impact on the delivery of both systems. There is a strong likelihood one or both systems will not make a 2020 launch. If the systems do launch, supply will likely be constrained and initial pricing could be higher than expected.
Currently, the economy is in an unprecedented state of uncertainty. Even if the situation clears up in a few weeks, the ability to manufacture and release a high-end new game system has already been severely impacted.
AMD, which supplies custom SoC for both the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, said only a short while ago that next-gen is still on track. However, the possibility of a delay cannot be discarded yet with the pandemic slowly subsiding in China but just about exploding in Europe and North America.

It's not all doom and gloom from the latest DFC Intelligence report for Sony and Microsoft, however, as the research firm agrees with IHS Markit's Piers Harding-Rolls that consumer demand should be 'stronger than ever' whenever they launch.

The good news is that consumer demand is likely to be stronger than ever. Demand will far exceed supply and long-term that could increase overall sales. In addition, the abundance of government and public caution should help assure this is a comparatively short-term crisis.
Both the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X will release to record consumer demand. The challenge Sony and Microsoft face is making sure they release systems that meet expectations. Given the current situation, waiting to make sure they get the initial product right is the most prudent choice.
Needless to say, we'll be taking a close look at any reports, rumors and news on the impact of the Coronavirus on the launch of PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. Meanwhile, stay tuned on Wccftech

There are enough Chinese still in good shape.
No way they will be delayed 😂

This could end up like PS2 with only 500K units in the US, buying consoles from scalpers out of the trunk of a car in the parking lot of Best Buy. :messenger_poop:

Yeah. With the way new hardware is made, often coming right down to the line and with limited units, I could really see a month or so of non-production being devastating to their schedule.

It would really suck. I guess to look on the bright side, more polished launch games, and time to save up (esp for those of us with older TVs)?

That took a while for them to wake up, I would be surprised if we had new consoles (or maybe even consoles) at some point this year... Maybe I'll be able to make tons of money selling my PS4 to some quarantined bored person at some point?

Report me if I continue to console war
I’m pretty sure both next gen consoles will be delayed to next year.

They should give us 16 TF machines on November 2021 to compensate.

Unlikely, such a dramatic performance increase would likely require a silicon redesign.

Its why i find these rumours of multiple PS5 devkits to be not the full story, sony are not designing multiple pieces of silicon.
I think its more likely to be different clock speeds, rdna1 vs rdna2, maybe different memory amounts and bandwidth, after the early devkits they dont change drastically.

Apple on the other hand is closing shops world wide yet keeping those in China open because the situation there is/has gotten better.
Looking at large retailers here and supermarkets, everyone and their suppliers are doing their job to keep shelves filled.
I'm inclined to think that a delay won't happen, but sales will probably more through online than physical stores (like that wasn't already happening anyway).

Represent.

Its naive to think there wont be a delay at this point. Literally everything is cancelled or delayed, and Sony has been quiet as fuck. Next gen is coming in 2021.

Hopefully they up the power on these things even more then.

Not likely to happen, that would require some serious overhaul and engineering.

Well, the excitement around PS2 was on a completely different level. In that there was excitement.

This just got me thinking that Scarlett might actually be a bigger boon than expected to MS if the prices rise due to the state of the economy... We'll just have to wait and see how this affects prices.

Considering the games that are still coming to the current consoles and the fact that neither seems to have any killer software ready for either of the new consoles it wouldn’t bother me.

im not going to upgrade simply for the sake of upgrading. They both need to show me playable games that are killer apps only capable on the new machines.

right now I’m playing Dark Souls Remastered and Dragon’s Dogma and the top games are minecraft and Fortnite none of which benefits from new hardware imo

For PS4 gamers, this wouldn’t be a problem because there are games available to play and also in the pipeline..

Xbox only gamers:

WTF. What is this console warrior shit?
Why is this the knee jerk reaction every single time….

Are you suggesting Xbox doesn’t have games? People buy them as paper weights?
I mean Sony, Nintendo, PC, and Microsoft all have their exclusives. But those are a drop in the bucket compared to the multi-platform games.

Just look at Game Pass, tons of Games Xbox gamers can play for free basically. In fact, Ori just got released and it’s fantastic!

Also, don’t forget this:

Microsoft is at #7. Sony not even in the Top 20!

I don’t think either one will be delayed, we might see bigger shortages then we were expecting and drip feeds into the supply chain, but there’s no way either of these systems miss their launch date.

Not surprise, as expected.
In Asia, China is getting better and under control.
I personally expect, if it's actually delayed, the new date would mark around Q1 2021.

Unless a vaccine is created quickly, I would be surprised if they weren't delayed. If they some how do release, they will be extremely supply constrained.

Watch Microsoft overwork their factories just so they can get a headstart in the next gen infinity war.

Remember kids: RRoD was because of their headstart back in 2005 ;)

Not this shit again.
And YLOD? What was that?
Microsoft learned their lesson. Just look how well designed and QUIET Xbox one and Xbox one X are!
series x is also supposed to be very quiet, it’s NOT going to happen!
The consoles are already designed, you clearly have ZERO idea how this works.

EverydayBeast

thinks Halo Infinite is a new graphical benchmark
Next gen is bigger for Microsoft, SONY beat them every generation, Microsoft is 0-3 against Nintendo and SONY, so if you want to give Microsoft a chance at winning next gen I think they NEED to release the console virus or not.
