[WIRED] Exclusive with Mark Cerny, PS5 specs detailed

More like they are late to the party and they realized that MS wants to release their console this year.
It would explain why they announce PS5 in shitty newspaper rather than on official event looking like amateurs.

Is that you von voost?

If you are remotely interested you need to buy day one (with pre order), because if it is anything like the Ps4 launch, it will be months before you can just walk into a store and pick up one. It will be constantly sold out.

PS4s were not rare. I had a preorder, then me and my nephews bought 3 more on launch day around 6p.m.

Well, if some of era xbox insiders would be so kind of send those dev kit info to for example Digital Foundry instead of 'Nibel'...

Ha, Xbox will have a tough time keeping up let alone surpassing these specs unless MS holds back a year. There wouldn't be anything better available.

Edit: At least in the AMD range.

You console warriors are something else.

Console warrior ? I merely stated a fact.
If Sony was happy with what is happening they would not go to some 3rd tier general news site to announce PS5.
It only shows that they learned about MS E3 reveal and they got with pants down.

Otherwise they would do professional conference like with PS4.

My bet is that they were convinced MS would not release their console in 2019 but it looks like they will announce it at this E3 with release this holidays. Remember X360 ? Sony and most of people back then didn't consider X360 any problem releasing one year earlier than Sony. How could some 3rd tier company threaten Sony which has been riding PS2 wave ?

If MS releases console this year and Sony year after then Sony will basically lose all steam as their console will not be stronger or better than MS. It will be the same and released year after.

Whoever releases first console will not be threatened by any hardware released in next 2-3 years as AMD will not be able to increase power in next 2-3 years.

MS already announced last E3.
Sony won't do a full reveal until PSX.

Lol give it a rest.

High quality fan-fiction there bud. More likely they saw an opportunity to steal attention away from the Xbox event today. It worked

Today inflation can be $449 or perhaps $499... no more than that.
Inflation was 0-1.5% over last 5 years, even $449 is a 10% price bump, way over.

Because more than likely the SSD NVMe chips will probably be directly connected and soldered onto the motherboard given it full speed unlike what's available in a PC. PC just can't do this. It's the upside of making a console.
Mm, then there would go HDD upgrades. Probably "new, faster PCIe" is more likely.

Lol, no I don't think Sony cares that MS announced their next gen when they JUST released the Xbox One X. If anything it shows that MS is scared of Sony's announcement so they did a pre-emptive strike. MS releasing their next box this holiday would be a disaster since the X is more powerful than the Pro already. Nobody wants to pay $500 every 2 years for a new console.

You're right, Jim Ryan only got round the watching the MS conference nearly a year later and totally felt they had been "got with pants down". They had no idea before then otherwise they'd have surely gone to a " 3rd tier general news site" earlier.

Doesn't it make sense to steal competitor's thunder, regardless of what they are going to announce?

Why would MS have problems beating what Sony plans to have (the main unknown is size of the Navi chip at this point), given that they have access to AMD's semi-custom and touted tight cooperation on the last conference?

PS
"not in AMD range" in Switch doesn't impress me much... :)

Maybe you will be able to plug in a USB drive for storage, but the games will have to be uploaded to the onboard SSD NVMe to play them?

Microsoft just announced new hardware, so what.

Not sure what the rest of your ramble is to be honest, you're all over the map.

PCI-E 4 would already allow more bandwidth than currently available on PC SSDs, and is already gaining availability. I know PCI-e 5 will be "ready", but not widely available and this console already seems to be pushing up on cost.

It's not impossible, but I'm imagining this SSD will be just over the current single drive transfer speeds for that claim to be true within reasonable costs, so 4 lanes of 4.0 would suffice.

I meant to say 4 or 5

Asking me a year ago I would've said that 500 is too much for a console, but seeing how some phones cost twice as much (or even more) these days it actually feels reasonable.

I can live with a $499 console that will last for another 7 or 8 years and give us quality content like the current generation has.

Yeah it'll be offering alot for 499 as it seems. For the ppl tht have psvr it offers double as it will be bc and probably enhance VR games. It's looking good.

They could still support external drives. Personally I'd take a non-upgradeable NVMe drive + optional external drive over a swappable SATA 3 drive.
It is called future proofing, but only in support. Do not expect 8K games. Expect great features though from the HDMI 2.1+ spec and photo algorithms for virtual photographers and photomode in games.

8K sets are releasing this year by almost every manufacturer as well.
Yeah people need to stop getting hung up on the 8K thing.

No, we wont see many native 8K games. But it still has advantages:
- internal scaler that may do a better job than your TV does
- we may have some games w/dynamic resolution that can go above 4K
- maybe even some indies/non graphically intensive games that are 8K native

And bottom line is that it's part of HDMI 2.1 spec, so there's no reason why they wouldn't at least support that as an output option.

Because Sony are the ones who were building Navi.

So, Nibel receive some info about the 'Next Box'. So, could he confirm if Next Box will use NAVI as well or Navi is a custom made hardware exclusive from PS5?

Thing is, those SSDs break pretty often. And why not have M2-ish user upgradable slot?

Navi is AMD's upcoming architecture (that is why it is "semi-custom" and not simply custom, they customize existing product).
One could claim that AMD focused on that particular part of the market, because of consoles or even Sony, but there is no way in hell for Sony to claim ownership of Navi GPU.

As with current gen, semi-custom chips were quite different, but had similar beef underneath, with some additional bells and whistles.

As someone who games like 99% on PC that SSD thing looks hot. Long ass loading times are why I nope out of most console games and go back to PC more than graphics.

(the main unknown is size of the Navi chip at this point)

Been wondering about the die size for a while but can't pass it as a fact as there's too many unknown factors when put together as an APU.
The 16 could be 16 threads and the 70 being a big die but could also be coincidence, everything about that SoC is different than from the usual it seems.

Lastly Anandtech wrote an article about the system which you can read here: https://www.anandtech.com/show/1422...stom-amd-chip-with-zen-2-cpu-navi-gpu-ssd-too

All tht custom shit is par the course. All the consoles had off the shelf components tht were modified a bit and called custom. I wouldn't get too carried away with the "custom" piece as all consoles have had custom pieces but in reality weren't tht much different from their off the shelf versions. This Navi will be customized for PS5 but I'm sure will see slightly different itinerations elsewhere. We shall see.

8k support? what about 4k60 support?
4k120hz from Digital Foundry
And hints are all we're getting beyond that. 8K display support is mentioned, which would suggest an HDMI 2.1 display controller - and by extension, I'd hope that PlayStation 5 will support variable refresh rate technology, also baked into the new HDMI standard. The system allows for 8K to be displayed at 60Hz, while 4K can also hit 120Hz.

2160p at 120FPS?! Sure jan.

PS4 game support sounds amazing though, imagine a boost mode on ps5 for ps4 games. Spiderman at 60FPS 2160P =D

Not really because if the higher bandwidth is coming from having PCIe 4 or 5 the USB port & CFexpress /SDexpress card slots will also benefit from the upgrade

these new cards are basically removable SSDs

CFexpress type C even has 4 PCIe lanes so on PCIe 4 controller it could reach 8GB/s & 16GB/s on PCIe 5

USB should be around 5GB/s on PCIe 4 & 10GB/s on PCIe 5

What is your source on SSDs breaking often? Modern SSDs have incredible write endurance. E.g. Samsung 970 EVO is rated for 600TB which equals 160GB/day for 10 years.

Anyway if they do go with NVMe, I strongly suspect the chips will be soldered directly to the motherboard to cut down on cost.

I knew it would be a beast.

We dont know anything about the specs yet, other then its Navi and Zen2. However those things will be avaible soon to the PC market, more then a year before PS5, so tests will be done im sure.

Because Sony are the ones who were building Navi.

AMD designs hardware, not Sony. They could have some influence though.

I'm not digging up your post but you know damn well you said ps5 won't match 1080 ti lol.

We have no clue about its RAW performance yet. RT could be without RT hardware, most likely.

BC ! Good news. Sounds like a beast. Maybe MS machine ends being more powerful bit Sony has the IPs i care so no big problem to me.
Imagine God of War 2. Boooiiii

Ryzen 3000 series is coming soonish but Navi is not. I wouldn't hold my breath for Navi graphics cards any time before September.

4k120hz from Digital Foundry

As I said about 5 different posts in the past few days, almost all of their TVs launching this year are supporting VRR, fast switching, and auto game mode with lower latency. The divisions are now working closer together, it will have VRR, etc..
