The more I play it, the more I like it. I think I "get" the combat system now. It's quite a steep learning curve imo. Learn to incorporate all systems into your style takes some time to get used to. Throwing/retrieving axe, attack, heavy attack, charge attack, attacking with the bow, runetech, finishers, bareknuckle fighting - there are a lot of options and the fact that you can do some of them "simultaneously" is not benefical for newcomers. And I didn't even mention all the mods and techniques you can use to optimize the system towards your very own playstyle.

But once you get used to it .... sweet baby jesus. I'm also at the point where the world opens up a bit and I can definitely see the high scores the game got now. Other games will probably have a REALLY hard time to compete with this game when it comes to the GOTY awards.
I'm also really liking the combat even tho I'm not full master it yet.

That's quite what HDR is supposed to do, bring the colours up to front and center. But if you don't like it, just a thought... turn HDR off? The option is there, if you're so inclined.
I agree about the colors being super vibrant and varied. Turning off hdr won’t take out colors. It just makes it less punchy. The bright greens, reds, and blues are all still as prevalent. I prefer the color pallet of the E3 reveal trailer. It was more muted and brown. I completely know what the original poster is talking about in this respect. I really love the color pallet of games like bloodborne and gears.

So anyone know what the must have skills for GoW mode are and what are the most important attributes to level up?

Just did the first mini world with
the elves war.
Pretty cool. I wonder if the rest of
the worlds
will be this good. Now I'm doing a favor for someone.

This game is WILD. It's far beyond any sort of modest expectation I had in respect to gameplay, graphics, etc. Some of the dialogue and narrative strolling could be improved but considering it's Kratos, it's kind of expected.

I turned on Remote Play and it's interesting. L2 and R2 are the front upperhand corners of the screen facing you. So you can throw the axe, but you're monitoring Kratos's movement and grip of the axe with your thumb.

Edit: if I put my index finger ontop the Vita it works a lot better.

I'm digging it so far, but the Naughty Dog formula of fighting some enemies to a narrative moment is kind of wearing thin on me. It doesn't help that the game is pretty linear so far with the side areas to explore being really small.

Production quality is top notch though.

I do think the jump from "give me a balanced challenge" to "give me a challenge" is kinda too much. I mean holy shit you die in 4 hits.

Something i'm not enjoying. I like to explore a lot. But often i meet enemies with purple life bar who can kill me in one or two hits.

Started it today and is the learning curve ever tough. Started it in the 2nd highest difficulty and since the game is constantly introducing new baddies, it’s hard to get through a lot of the mob encounters.

You really have to use all the weapons at your disposal; Fists, Axe, Shield, Arrow spam, instant stun kills, rolls and the plain old run away because you’re faster than everyone tactics. Had to cheese a mini-boss and a purple one shot kills enemy just to get by because I really don’t have enough info yet on what these guys’ weaknesses are.

So I picked this game up today and played for a few hours, as a huge hack and slash fan, here are my thoughts:

1) The game is good overall. It's certainly no 10/10, as it's a mash of other genres that do what it does better, but it's a good package.
2) There are a lot of sequences that are "cinematic". You'll be pressing forward on the joystick and Kratos will traverse the environment, while his son have a dialogue. It's done to build their characters, so not totally pointless.
3) The game takes me out of the action a bit more than I'd like, hopefully that changes. The cinematic stuff is as bad as I thought, but I can live with it, because...

4) The most important thing about the game, is the combat. I will say if you like DMC, gaiden, etc, you will not be disappointed. The combat in this game is on par with darksiders or so. I would say I enjoy it as much as a recent release as NiOh, but it doesn't touch DMC or gaiden. Between the old and new GoW hack and slash gameplay, I would say this iteration adds a lot of complexity and tool use, so your brain is constantly on fire trying to juggle your tools. I imagine the upgrade system will greatly expand this, but already very impressed.

So in summary, if you're having cinematic game fatigue, this will annoy you, but the combat and presentation is worth it. I'd say definitely give it a go. Also, if you like hack and slash, play on the second highest difficulty. The highest apparently makes enemies damage sponges, while the second highest is just right I found.

I really need to know if purchasing armor is worth it. Does it last for a while?

I'm frugal when it comes to games, so I try to spend as little as possible.

I had to tone it down from "give me a challenge" to "give me a fair challenge". Which is a shame because I would have liked something a little more in between the two as the jump is pretty huge.

It's worth it, but decide which spec you want to go first. Get armor with defense if you want to specialize in shield skills, etc.

Does it take a while to replace them?
I find it's easier to upgrade your armor than replace it with something that lowers another stat while boosting the one stat you want.

Upgrade your armor and always check to see if you can buy a new set. Also check to see if you met the requirements for other gear too.

I switched to performance mode and I don't see much difference too which is nice because it's so smooth

Not all armor is bought either, you do find some in hidden areas from chests. However silver is pretty common to buy new sets, now maybe you might want to hold on until upgrading pieces as so for me it seems like the mats like soft silver are a little tough to come by.

Yeah, I just did a quest and got
Tyr's Lost Unity Gauntlet
which has insane stats. If the game are full of these, I'm just gonna save up to buy these instead of buying the smaller stuff.

So fucking good!!!

I just got the thing! Lets just say its the thing you get after a long boat ride. Sooo good! Oh the feels!

Sometimes he can be, but doesn't happen often and it's usually when you are just exploring outside locations. Overall the interaction between Atreus and Kratos is very positive and they both evolve as characters, as does their relationship.
SSM is really paying attention to our complaints, another patch today that allows text size to be changed.

One enemy I hate the most is that motherf**cking
Nightmares

By themselves are not that big of issue, but when they are with others enemies they can be really pain in the ass.

Reminds me of Rise of the tomb Raider in parts, the combat took awhile to kick in but after I got a grasp its been stellar. The no cut aspect is doooooope.

Hipster kratos, I still wonder how he survived in gow3 he killed himself, plothole already in the game, everybody just ignore.
Tell me this, how can he die in the world where the Hades no longer exist anymore? In GOWIII Kratos broke the world in Greece realm by killing every god.

Finished it tonight. Wonderful game. Not worth the absolute slobbering the media is giving it, but it's definitely goty worthy.

GoW mode is an absolute joke though. Oooh let's cut your damage output by 80% and give your enemies an 80% boost in damage. Let's cut your parry window while we're at it. Let's make a 45 second encounter in the regular game last 5 minutes with nothing added except for those modifiers in GoW mode.

Yes I'm salty at the moment.

Tell me this, how can survive somebody if that man stab himself, with the blade of olympus, lost like 3 liter blood, and he have a big fricking hole on he's body funny how gow4 not mention how kratos survived that, he did died the same way like Zeus killed kratos in gow2 the same stab, same big hole on he's body.

I am liking the game more the further I am getting into it. The combat is really good. I am disappointed there have still not been any huge boss battles yet though. I want to fight something big and over the top crazy.

I have to agree. I switched it down to normal, but after some upgrades it's a bit east again. The devs didn't get the difficulty settings right me thinks. Having enemies become damage sponges who don't flinch at your attacks and can take you out in 3 hits just makes it a tedious exercise in patience if you keep the mob sizes the same. What they should have done is reduce the mob size but make each enemy much more aggressive and dangerous - kinda like dark souls. At higher difficulty in GoW you just get ganged by brick houses. I might switch it up again after I have a good arsenal of upgrades.

Also if they add an option to zoom the camera out and get rid of the kid that would be great.

GoW mode is no joke....Some tips for others, juggle them if possible, ledges and gaps ( e.g. bridge) + heavy attack are a good way to cheese some annoyinh enemies, repel/reflect projectiles, defensive armor/dlc armor (=luck boost which boosts xp)

Loving/Hating GoW on GoW so far😍

Easily my most favorite part of the game so far.

What impresses me the most about this game is how much there is to do compared to all the previous games.
Really glad SSM took this approach, apart from the epic set-pieces from the older games, this GOW is far superior to the rest overall.

My Atreus is just as effective as Kratos. For anyone having issues with Nightmares, just upgrade Atreus, he kills them in one volley even on hard. GoTG, love it and am savoring every moment.

I went head first on give me god of war for my play through and good lord the combat feels amazing, before in past tittles i wouldn't have put GOW in the same category of DMC and platinum games of the genre, it was like the lite version of those, but now? now the combat is as deep if not even deeper than those games because of some stuff that the game is doing that those games never came around to incorporate.
My biggest crush on the combat is the wall, enemy and floor bouncing being tied to the stun damage, what a stroke of genius that system is.
Maybe it is because of the difficulty i'm playing on, but when enemies enter the rage like mode they become a serious threat. So finding a way to execute them fast is pretty important which can be achieved by optimizing your stun damage in combos.
Also crowd control feels very important and something you are given the tools to play with making very fun and challenging fighting hordes of enemies.

Cinematics, and presentation in general are great, ND level good i might say. But the combat system is pretty off the charts, can't wait to unlock more stuff going forward.

The camera is my major grip, makes it hard to fight in one direction and evade in the oposite one since parry is always towards where your character is facing, getting the hang of it with the markers but it is not an elegant solution, should have unlocked camera on the menu.

Haven't touched the other dificulties but give me GOW feels good, it's like forcing me to learn how to play although i admit i've been diying a lot, but when i get it i get it and breeze through the encounters, not much luck involved yet.

so far I'm 5h in to this game and I'm surprised how much I'm liking the combat and really surprised how tough the game is in hard difficulty.

I LOVED the boss fight with the
tattoo guy
Man, that fight was amazing. I just realized how good the game is after that fight.

The game is half God of War, half The Last of Us, half Dark Souls, half Uncharted, half Hellblade and even half Resident Evil 4. And somehow it manages to be more than the sum of its parts. Amazing game.

Yes, I don't understand math.

Yeah, that whole scene made me think he was
actually going home, like going back to his realm. Lol at the moment I remembered his house

Swap Uncharted with reboot Tomb Raider. :p It's structure reminded me more of that than anything, especially Rise, with how it goes from more linear at times, then to hubs with side quests and exploring.

Then there was a plot hole in the God of War 3 ending. After the credits, you see Kratos's body had left the spot where he died indicating he once again failed to stay dead.

I'm only a few hours in, but this game is really impressive. The graphics, voice acting, presentation, and combat are all off the charts. The latter has taken some time for me, with my old man brain and such, but it works well when it clicks.

I went ahead and bought it last night on a whim after doubting I was even into these kind of games anymore, but so far, so good. HZD kind of got in my head, as I fully realized it's a great game and a technical marvel...I just had no interest in finishing it when I got towards the end. I am finding Kratos a lot more fun to play than Aloy though, with the focus on brute power/melee combat and such, and also find his character a lot more interesting, so maybe that will help me keep me going. Atreus also has the potential to be annoying, but so far, the devs handled his implementation well. He's really helpful in fights, his lines are generally delivered well, and aside from some unnecessary screeching in battle, having him as part of the journey has been pretty great.

As for negatives, it's kind of strange how blocked off everything feels, considering it's a game that puts emphasis on exploration. Again, only 3 hours or so into it, but it feels everything is on a beaten path - like, a small boulder is an insurmountable roadblock to a demigod who can tear the head off of a giant beast. I get it, gameplay wise, but it just seems off.

Also, not crazy about the boating portions serving such an integral part to navigation (or at least it seems thus far). I'm just not finding these parts fun, and the water and mist graphics at the
the Lake of the Nine
feel rather unimpressive, compared to other things in the game.
