Valve announces Artifact, a new DOTA-based card game at TI7 [Up: A few details]

Before Hearthstone came out, Blizzard devs were giving bad PowerPoint presentations to half-empty rooms about it, now it has like 50 million players or something.

I'm not worried about a few salty fans at KeyArena booing the game. I am extremely interested in this and can't wait to hear more details about it. I hope we get some soon.

With this much vitriol? Don't kid yourself. This thing seems universally panned compared to DOTA2 and CSGO.

Blizzard has the benefit of making multiplayer focused games since the mid 90s. People are shitting on Valve because they don't make SP games anymore. Dota and CSGO were still fresh at the time but card games are aplenty at the moment. It's insane to have this much hatred when no one knows anything about the game.

They don't care about the nerds that miss their SP games. This will hit all the CCG players and convert parts of the DOTA people. It potentially has lots of possibilities to be monetized. If they are real smart it also launches on mobile.

We haven't even seen the game yet.

and people were very critical of both of these projects back in the day, though admittedly, there were less people bitter about Valve's SP output.

Thing is, nothing makes league money. It's so far ahead of eveyrything so just a VERY small fraction of that money would still be an insane success for any company.

Honestly I'm really happy with Dota's level of new content. They could never add another new hero again and the game would still be exceptional.

They'll need a decent content pipeline for Artifact though.

Expectations for expansions are a bit different in that genre.

Never said they have to do more to keep the game a success.
But as a player I thrive for more than "the studio get rich anyway", and seeing some of the smaller games ( as in, they don't have peak player over 1000 ) I play on the side, get more content released than dota is often a pretty big reminder of that.

Dota has so much content that I find it hard to believe you've expended it. Dota doesn't need that much content, the game is already impossible to learn.
 
I for one am excited about this card game. *shrug*

Maybe they should have made a game with the same budget and team size as this (aka most likely very small) and called it HL3 instead.

I agree. I don't like seeing so many new heroes releasing in LOL, that kind of change always happening is hard to balance and I think having DOTA2 adding new heroes at a very slow pace diminishes chances of the game becoming unbalanced.

I mean, it's not like other sports like Football and Soccer got less interesting because nothing was added to them, and people are still watching them to this day. I see games like DOTA2 in the same vein. Just add cosmetics, but have a baseline for the game that people enjoy and keep it that way. No point in bringing new things in that will disrupt the game people already enjoy, even if it might bring in more money.


Also, really hoping that card game will have a esport league and be added to TI and majors and supported by Valve in the same way DOTA2 is.

I enjoyed all of those more than Dota ¯_(ツ)_/¯, and when everything wasn't about cosmetics and crates and shit.

And did he say he only wanted Singleplayer games from Valve?

I'm a sucker for card games though, so hopefully this is a nice surprise. Although I really do need to pick up Gwent at some point too.

Well it's not too hard to learn the new heroes in League since a majority of them follow the same basic template. 1 Damage Skill Shot, 1 Positioning/Movement Spell, 1 Disable Skill Shot.

Oh who cares. Most comments are "ME WANTS HALF LIFE 3 NOT DIS" anyway. They're meaningless. Unless this is a steaming pile of garbage it is going to print money.
 
Personally, I'm stoked for this. Dota is one of my most played games ever, so I'll try any kind of soon offs they want to put out. I just really hope there is a mobile or even tablet version. I don't see myself sitting at my PC to play a card game. I never really got hardcore into Hearthstone until it went mobile either.

I also don't get the hate. Did you guys really expect them to announce Half Life 3 at a Dota tournament?

I've enjoyed all of those games more than Dota and all of them got shit support compared to Dota. I mean just look at the state of TF2 right now?
 
I'll try it out as long as it's not another Hearthstone clone. I already play Hearthstone, I don't need similar but not. Seems adequately different from the few details we have.

Hex is a clumsy Magic clone that's biggest selling point is that Magic has awful offerings in the digital space with little hope for improvements. Ugh.

Somebody just needs to copy Duel Masters. Takes the strengths of Magic, streamlines it, makes it a little more casual but not dumbed down to Hearthstone's level. Still going in Japan.
 
hopefully this card game will explore other monetization options like how they revolutionalized MOBAs by including all characters for free. Maybe you get all cards for free and only pay for cosmetics. I'd try it then :)

You learn quite a bit in 3000 hours. ^ ^

Mastering it is something else entirely thought. :p

I mean without speaking about pubs; every TI has been interesting, yet we have seen pretty much half the rooster being released since TI1, and as of today only what 4-6 hero didn't get played during TI7 ? yet if dota 2 wasn't a sequel/remake of the first one, it would have been easy to say 6 years ago "hey 50 hero is already a whole bunch, you will never really master all of them, they really can take their time now.".
Yet here we are and we have the opportunity to see that huge variety of hero getting played in high level tournament.

Obviously I would never expect 10+ hero released a year ever again. But we really are at the very end of the opposite spectrum, with 2 hero per year for the past 2 years, currently 0 this year ( with I guess water spirit or whatever will be the next one probably released for fall 2017 ) and them having a hard time having the ( paid ? I can't say if people without a compendium can play it ) "seasonal event" Siltbreaker ready in time. That's what I call on life support development wise.

And based on what was tweeted by cyborgmatt, even Valve realise that they are lacking in the new hero department.

And unlike DotA those games came out, had their periods of support and then they moved on.

DotA is an unending behemoth that seems like it will forever get new cosmetics and minor updates that feels like they distract from any major* new efforts from Valve

*major game development, not VR hardware, other hardware, or anything that's not a new AAA game
 
Also from the few details we have they seem to do things quite differently, which is good. Card games are fine if they don't follow the Hearthstone formula too close. Gwent is a nice change of pace I think. This could be even more divergent.

They could do it that way but I doubt they do. Valve has the benefit of having a marketplace and an inventory system that other card games don't have. This kind of creates a much more sandbox experience in terms of how they monetize it. They could of course give everyone all cards for free and only have rare version of cards to be distributed by those means. Its gonna be interesting how they handle it.
