WASHINGTON — The Trump administration is preparing to redirect resources of the Justice Department's civil rights division toward investigating and suing universities over affirmative action admissions policies deemed to discriminate against white applicants, according to a document obtained by The New York Times.

The document, an internal announcement to the civil rights division, seeks current lawyers interested in working for a new project on ”investigations and possible litigation related to intentional race-based discrimination in college and university admissions."

The announcement suggests that the project will be run out of the division's front office, where the Trump administration's political appointees work, rather than its Educational Opportunities Section, which is run by career civil servants and normally handles work involving schools and universities.

The document does not explicitly identify whom the Justice Department considers at risk of discrimination because of affirmative action admissions policies. But the phrasing it uses, ”intentional race-based discrimination," cuts to the heart of programs designed to bring more minorities to university campuses.

Supporters and critics of the project said it was clearly targeting admissions programs that can give members of generally disadvantaged groups, like black and Latino students, an edge over other applicants with comparable or higher test scores.

Elections matter. I'd like to thank all those progressives out there who were too principled to vote for the candidate on the ballot. Some of us will be feeling this more than others for a LONG time.

Yep. Sessions was considered too racist to be a considerated a federal judge by other Republicans in the damn 80s.

Spineless modern GOP.

Ditto. I am sure this will work its way up to SCOTUS. Better go out and vote during midterms.

wew, glad I already got all of my affirmative action resources but feel bad for everybody else like me that are going to hit a hard wall when trying to get into a college with a spotty high school record.

yooooooooooooooooooooo

Well at least all those Asians that voted for Trump aren't benefiting from this.

Edit: God fuckin damn it, Asians will benefit from this too according to the article.

A lot of asians actually dislike affirmative action as well since they tend to be an overreprrsented group in colleges
That was my point in that I thought it would just target universities biased against whites but the article says Asians are included in this push.

What the...

Like, I am not surprised considering who is in charge, but the mere concept of it turns my brain upside down.

Racists tend to think AA is based on racial quotas. As if admissions officers are sitting there looking at demographic information as a primary basis for admission and we have set numbers on how many of each group we'll accept. That was largely shut down decades ago.

What they're bitching about now is that some applicant with little to no challenges throughout their lives, with a high test score, and mediocre GPA gets passed over another candidate that went through some shit with less resources with a lower test score and GPA in the same ballpark.

And there are over 2,000 four year universities in the US. There are only a few at the very top percentage-wise that will be faced with tough decisions when they have 1,000 spots for 100,000 applicants and have to choose between two similarly qualified academic applicants for that last spot.

The vast majority of other schools, which are still great, will accept both in most cases.

Trump is just trying to reverse progress. Damn this is so petty. I swear if Obama cured cancer Trump would find a way to reverse it.

I mean they're pushing against the law as a whole so if they succeed (and I hope to God they don't) of course the entire thing will disappear, including the Asian part. It's not a part of sessions intent, it's just a natural byproduct of this type of action

DoJ making sure that mediocre white boys don't get their ego crush when they don't get accepted into their reach schools.

That's not how admission works. You don't get extra points for just being a person of color. Your story is taking into account.
