Digital Foundry: Xbox Scorpio

Specs are console-leading, which is good.

But unless they are going to unveil a Scorpio-exclusive, like Super Minecraft 4K with high res textures and no more blocky looks, I don't see it denting the PS4/Pro that much.

They need killer GAMES and NOT just Forza.

Apparently you guys didn't get the Besada memo that this is a hardware thread. If you wan't to talk about games and the lack thereof, go elsewhere. So much concern over the games, where are the games, why announce a hardware release and only talk hardware, where are the games as if E3 isn't coming up quickly.

THIS sounds interesting! This is the next generation console instead of an iterationand a cashgrab.

It will cost a lot, I've no doubt about that. But still, this a lot more interesting that anything from Sony or Microsoft in a looooooong time (One S is neat tho, so sexy!).

If they give it a native mouse and keyboard support, I just might get one. It has all the features a console/media center should have.

So glad that Microsoft started fighting back, now they just need to keep some sense in their marketing and features (not flukes like the "all digital" even though people are very much gone digital).

And above all, all this new tech sounds just so damn interesting and I am very eager to learn more about the features! I just love all these new and exiting technological innovations.

And just a note, being an innovation doesn't mean that it has to be something absolutely never seen before -stuff! Some people seem to think so.

And I am very happy for Digital Foundry. Grats guys, this must've been a hell of a ride for you!

EDIT. And the fact that this power can be used for XBOne and even (at least some) 360 games is marvelous! They been doing some heavy work at the Microsoft! They must feel proud of this machine, specs reveal now and all.

Oh, and the fact that specs is revealed already should mean that come E3, people will talk about features and games instead of specs. Seems pretty smart for me, concentrate on one thing at a time. Helps keeping the message clear.

All that's missing is the casing. I want them to continue the route they took with S, I like that so much <3

Well, I'm certainly looking forward to seeing this hardware in action!

This video mentions some things that I don't think I've seen yet.

https://youtu.be/tqvc8M6hpbI?t=833

13 minutes in mentions

*the consoles full power is available in old games
*3 GB is used as RAMdisk(SSD like speeds maybe) in older games for quick loading

RAM speeds are much much faster than SSD, but obviously is a temporary storage (power off, data gone). It will simply cache often used files from that game in the spare RAM space.

MS is playing people like a damn fiddle when it comes to Scorpio's price, it's going to make them look really good to those who buy this idea that "it's going to be $500+" even though nothing in the hardware supports that.

In the span of 1 day we've gone from DF being a bias site who is Pro Sony and hates Xbox to a Pro Xbox site that is bias against Sony.

Amazing

I don't know or care who has been saying that and didn't say just DF, I said DF and Leadbetter. Richard has a pretty long history with XBox/Microsoft (and Sega before that) and one of the main people regurgitating MS PR spin on the XBox One's hardware shortcomings.

Another positive note, the DF vids were awesome so good job and thanks for the effort! Clearly explained for a non tecchy like me to understand and good to see some honest views and excitement!

They put a lot of work into Scorpio. Are they going to advertise it as a full new gen console? All the stuff they are doing may seem overkill if they are not.

This current spec war is not something consumers should be cheering for, there is a severe drought of exclusive software for Xbox hardware, throwing more power into the mix is crazy but what's more crazy is people are happy with this power strategy and MS's investment going towards off the shelf customizeable components rather than good ol fashion quality software.

This current spec war is pretty insane to me because I think console platforms should be defined by their games first and foremost, not raw power because anyone can just buy it.

Please post receipts of Rich and DF having a long history of having MS PR spin please or not calling out MS hardware shortcomings.

You go with less than 8 physical cores, you break XBO game backward compat. You can't even go 8 threaded with 4 core Ryzen.

Hell, I don't think even 8 core Ryzen is a guarantee for full compatibility. They really had no option but Jaguar. Even if you went 8 core Jag+ say 2 core Ryzen, then you are forcing devs to basically make two very different versions of the games for Scorpio and XBO.

What? So your saying a cpu that's $329 retail can't have a custom chip made that uses the same to similar architecture that will be at cost for Sony or Microsoft?

I don't think going with different core count cpu will break compatibility if the devkit and code is written properly for that game to run on. Your also comparing a old ass cpu like Jaguar to a brand new cpu that straight up destroys any Jaguar even it's 4 core.

I still think we will get a cheap 6-8 core ryzen variant with low TDP in next xbox and playstation.

Console generations are long these days and a mid-gen refresh is needed to keep up with computers. Sure MS needs more first party output but OG Xbone wouldn't cut it anymore in a few years.

the disparity wil most often be resolution

Resolution, texture quality / AF. Combined will make for a much better picture than CB on the pro. Looking back, the pro could have done with more ram/bandwidth for textures (in addition to the 512mb extra).

Are you serious? Watch the video man. They've implemented various hardware solutions to offload the CPU.
Naa, they aren't going out of their way to be deceptive. It's just convenient since this was nothing other than a glorified pr event. How else can you explain the joke comparison between the rx480 in the Scorpio and a gtx 1080. Now we have people parading around the forums claiming that the Scorpio is going to be more powerful that the gtx 1080 with about 4 less teraflops(architectural difference aside) than the gtx 1080 at 1950mhz. Truly poor form from digital foundry and I warned of this yesterday.

No it isn't. The first next generation console will be Ps5. These specs are a bigger mid gen upgrade compared to Ps4Pro but still a mid gen upgrade.

Dude. It's an iteration.

It's an iteration, dude.

I have to ask. If we did get, say, next of announced for 2017 ~~ would we expect better specs?

One way to think about it is that devs don't have to worry about cross-gen anymore, to get their game out on Gen8.5 (if that's where we are)

Also is switch the only Gen 9 console?

Or 1.5k if prebuilt

I just need to know if they'll do W10 support... I hope so....

I'm in regardless for BC tho. Will pre order asap
You're kidding right? Any rig with a gtx 1070 or above will outperform scorpio easily. You can get those under $1k pre-built.

Just saw that it's getting a 1TB HDD.
If it's a premium console, they should just scrap that and only sell versions with 2TB and up. 1TB is not enough nowadays.

With them allowing externals, it's absolutely the best move to not pass that cost to the consumer initially, to everyone whether one needs it or not.

I hope next gen comes with a 256-512 GB ssd standard, though. Having that standard could really change the way Devs use assets. Just like PS4 installing the game from bluray silently while you can start playing the game, the currently played game's assets could be copied to the SSD from a slower HDD, external or internal.

This is an interesting perspective. What about these specs make it the next generation console instead of an iteration?
My understanding of the hardware behind these consoles is limited at best, but this appears to a beefed up version of well known & used architecture. That indicates that to me that it's also an iteration, but with a longer stride over the PSPRO - though 12 months and a mystery price tag doesn't make it all that surprising.

I'd expect that infact the next generation console(s) will land in 2-3 years and at a minimum - will use new architecture and a bunch of new/custom features. I don't know what those are, but I assume it will go beyond an upgraded Jaguar etc

Would love to see what kind of performance they get out of something like BF1.

Considering how bad the X1 version looks that would be good.

If MS were smart they should be readying a series of videos showing X1 and Scorpio versions of games side by side. Including already released and upcoming games once E3 is over.

I am hoping stuff will appear before e3 but i am guessing a certain amount of time will be spent showing off Scorpio to XB1 games.

Also hopefully get some 3rd parties talking about patches.

There is a reason why PS4 Pro is also doing Jaguar. 100% code compatibility. Unlike PC games, XBO and PS4 games are not written for a high level OS like Windows for variety of CPUs. Their games are written intimately close to how the CPU cores are actually constructed. Each thread is coded for the clockspeed and capabilities of the CPU architecture, which is Jaguar. Ryzen is very different architecture. Using code that expects Jaguar CPU on Ryzen will break that game.

I still think we will get a cheap 6-8 core ryzen variant with low TDP in next xbox and playstation.

PS5 maybe. NextBox I'm not sure. Depend if they do a new and or next gen.
