Digital Foundry: Xbox Scorpio

While they're definitely neophiles I see zero evidente that they're lying about their enthusiasm. They're also a little more than willing to reiterate untested claims about the importance of customizations to stock designs, but given that there's no way to test a typical title running on multiple platforms at this point I guess that's to be expected. Consumers should know what they're getting in terms of coverage this early on. Anything new and slightly different is unprecedented and amazing, which gets a little old when you've seen the cycle repeat over and over, but at least it's consistent. They also had some of the most positive coverage of the PS4 Pro when it was first revealed.
I was being sarcastic, in response to other posts. My bad haha. I thought I was sounding absurd enough for it to be obvious. 😬

I am impressed that DF was impressed that much.I guess they had lower expectations before going to that reveal 'ceremony'.
Anyway, it is good news that Microsoft is still trying to win this race back. But they should concentrate on games firstly. After all it is the reason we buy all these boxes.

pretty negligible I think, the bigger advantage for scorpio is 4k textures and 16xAF (if the Pro doesn't somehow do those as well)
Just forget about the 16AF. Dont think its ever coming to a PS4 Pro game ever. Not to mention 4k textures.

For me the biggest advantage could the custom jaguar. I want them to go more into detail about it.

I will be VERY interested to see the 2160cp vs 2160p and if it was worth the year wait.

Not that big a difference tbh and the reason why games like Horizon on Pro look stunning on a 4k TV already.

The actual game graphics will be what sets Scorpio apart, way more than resolution because checkerboarding can look excellent.

Xbox "ULTRA"

using the Killer Instinct annoucer VO so it sounds like .. EX-BOX ... ULLLLLLTRRRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!

then they play 2010 dubstep with a montage of tweens smiling at a tv.

Nice, but why does the box extend a good inch or two further than the pcb/fan casing on the left hand side? Looks like you could shave a bit off there?

Look at the top left corner. Looks like the power port is next to the main elements, rather to being within its limits. Maybe that extra space is going to be used for an unknown purpose, but the port is definitely place outside.

If it was special they would boast about it. It is the spec reveal after all.

Some people in this thread are just getting nasty. Time for believers to abandon thread and leave the haters to continue spreading vitriol?

Do we know if the Kinect will work?

I'd be surprised if it wasn't at least supported like it is on the S. However, I doubt there will be any major mention of it, as the device is unfairly regarded as poison.

I hope they still have the cable program because I've had mine plugged in and used every day since day 1. It's a great piece of tech and makes interacting with the console in certain use cases very enjoyable and easy. I'm still miffed that they took away the hand control options and the old netflix build that worked great with it. It was the best way to scrub through video content outside of a mouse.

And yes, a lot of people are working overtime to downplay every aspect about it. A lot of people spent the last 3 years gloating over every DF comparison, and soon they won't be able to do that. Look at how many posters are now claiming DF of all places is biased towards MS and is doing PR puff-piece sponsored content. It just really grates certain people that MS made an impressive piece of gaming hardware that puts the Pro to shame in many ways.

Nah, they put out a basic outline of these same specs a while back. It was what MS did with it (software, customization, high clocks) that impressed them. It's in the articles and videos.

yeah, but what's the real world performance of that? I had a friend who played Horizon on a monitor and then played it in 4K and wasn't really impressed. It's a jump in fidelity, but we enthusiast do exaggerate the real world difference at times.

Sitting down with Destiny on PS4 Pro and Scorpio isn't going to be some huge deal to likely majority of the gaming industry. Scropio is roughly 50% more powerful, it's what Pro would have been if it came out this year. It's comparable to PS4 > X1, slightly bigger jump, but again, I don't see the real world differences being that major once the games start rolling out.

The real world performance if we assume that the jump is the same as the xbox one to ps4 (which is underplaying it) is that all those face off articles for every multiplatform game this generation will now have a different conclusion.

That's why they went to digital foundry.

That's why this matters.

hmmm...if that ever was the case for Neogaf I'm not sure it is any longer. GAF is pretty mainstream now man.

I think it'll still work with an adapter

I hope so. I don't use it for voice anymore but my kids love it for Just Dance.

It just seems so childish and it's not a good look but then again I kind of expected it!

Looks like I'm on a 'wait and see' approach. I held back on getting a PS4 Pro instead opting for a 1070 GTX, and now knowing its still a jaguar has me a bit skeptical. I can be swayed however if MS show off some great must have exclusive games this E3 but if I can play them on PC then why bother really.

Yeah... now I'm worried it'll be $499+, if so I'm definitely out. Not much budget for me to wiggle around between all the amazing games coming out, a Pro and a Switch.

$399 is a pipe dream, if we are lucky (and MS decides to be generous) the cheapest we may get is $449. I don't see it going past $499 or under $449, thats the premium sweetspot IMO and what their aiming for.

Phil Spencer already stated he expects XB1 S to sell more then Scorpio due to Scorpio's premium price tag. Their making this system as an option for the more serious techy gamers out there, and like Spencer said, this will be the Rolls-Royce of the Xbox family. If you can afford it good for you, if not go the cheaper route and get an Xbox One S, no worries, it plays all the same games, your not left out.

Thats the message here

okay - let me be serious for a second.

- 1.8TF extra to achieve native 2160p (4k) [compared to ps4 pro]
- 3GB GDDR5 Ram extra to stream 4k textures/assets [compared to ps4 pro]
- 10% extra CPU power with less overhead to sustain frame-rates when game is pushing 4k res and 4k assets/textures [compared to ps4 pro]
- 1TB HDD that loads 50% faster than OG 500GB HDD. "faster loading times" [compared to xbox one]

Does that sound about right yall?

Pretty much. Only thing that sets this place apart from others now is the moderation. The quality of posters are what you'd expect on the internet.

I know we've discussed it previously, but there's a bit of a hurdle involved with 4k textures in the delivery of those 4k assets. They won't fit on the blu ray on in most cases and they can't use UHD for games. Unless MS is willing to offer them as add-ons free of charge, they will be a bit tricky. Pubs won't pay for the extra bandwidth etc, and Joe Consumer won't be happy with a mandatory patch with 20+GB content they can't even use.

16xAF should be good though, Sony needs to get on that

Is 16xAF still that big a deal? I don't think I've ever not cranked AF all the way up in my entire life, surely the performance hit can't be so much that it can't be used on PS4 Pro? I mean God, I'm surprised it wouldn't be used on the base model consoles. o__o

That hardware DX12 operation to the CPU is also a very intriguing wrinkle for me.

So it's a bigger gap than PS4-XB1, though that was expected. MS would be smart to compare the Scorpio to the original PS4 to show how massive of a leap it is, considering what 95% of the install base is on the non pro. Try and entice the 360->ps4 folks to come back.

Yeah, and outside of GAF, that's not really important, and besides COD coming out on X1 at launch looking a bit rough, DF threads have always been overblown. I think when you have to screenshot things side-by-side to see the differences, it's moot for most gamers.

When I say real world performance, I'm speaking about the gaming community as a whole. We on GAF are well...just different. We analyze ground textures and someone mentioned Aloy's fingers being too long in a Horizon thread lol. Catch my drift?

Not downplaying Scorpio mind you, I wish Sony would have waited and Pro had these specs. If I was into MS games I would buy this console day one with a trade it. Just offering perspective.

Oh boy, i think at e3 we are in for a treat for some 4k 60fps Killer Instinct!

I really hope they provide media downloads so we can see the 4k videos without streaming deficiencies. i think they did this last year, right?

How does a 1tb HDD load anything faster than a 500gb one? Is it a 15k rpm drive or something?

Faster load times comes from a combination of memory/CPU/HDD with larger throughput speeds. It's not just one piece. Also using memory as a RAM drive, as they mentioned, can potentially really speed up things.

The specs seem good. As someone that has a Pro and a computer that is able to play games at a pretty high level, I'm probably not going to get a Scorpio. I am however hoping this pushes Microsoft to put out some more quality games. I've said many times I'm not against getting an Xbox One, but there just isnt really anything on there that interest me too much.

I got Forza for the computer, and after playing Halo 4, I really do not have much interest in Halo in it's current state. Honestly, the thing that interest me most about an Xbox One is the UHD drive since I have a 4K TV. I can get that with a One S though, and as of right now, if they can get more game support, I'd probably end up getting an S instead of a Scorpio. I'm happy for those who have been looking forward to the Scorpio though, it seems like they will be getting a solid machine.

Specs are console-leading, which is good.

But unless they are going to unveil a Scorpio-exclusive, like Super Minecraft 4K with high res textures and no more blocky looks, I don't see it denting the PS4/Pro that much.

They need killer GAMES and NOT just Forza.

Interesting point, maybe they can find a middle ground so textures are better than before but still not as good as PC, to keep size down or maybe some form of compression to fit on the disc because if not there will be some pretty big patches coming on any games that offer ultra textures, I'm sure that will be annoying to a lot of people.

I can't remember. Perhaps someone else would like to chime in?

Hopefully along with the patch, they announce a new KI is in development too. 4K characters and all

Regardless of anything, the biggest problem I see is price, Sony can probably undercut them by $100 or maybe as much as $150 with the Pro.
