Digital Foundry: Xbox Scorpio

This all sounds awesome for people like us on a gaming forum, but I wonder how enticing it will be to Joe Normalman who already owns either an Xbox One or PS4.

Not that enticing, just like the Pro
They're aimed at enthusiasts
The PS4 Slim and Xbox One S will remain the consoles most people buy

The ONLY question I have regarding the Scorpio now is... do we wait to buy two new TVs with HDMI 2.1, or spend much less later this year for the higher end TVs that are still using HDMI 2.0

Hmmmm

Scorpio doesn't have HDMI 2.1 so there is no question.

Bungee and Activision are very cozy with Sony concerning Destiny, I don't imagine they will go out of their way to make a MS machine outshine the rest

They built a PC version and you're crazy if you don't think that will be the "Best" version from a performance capability standpoint. There's no reason they won't use it to tune a Scorpio version.

With that being said...

I hope we get an announcement about Xbox and PC crossplay though. That would set me over the edge to get the game on PC instead of PS4.

Joe Normalman gives zero fucks about the Pro/Scorpio.
Joe Normalman will play his games on his 720p set and be fully content.

Yep. I really do not understand how people aren't getting this still.

Neither the Pro nor Scorpio are designed with the average Joe in mind. Just like high end OLED TV sets aren't designed for your average Joe buying his TV at Wal-Mart

PC comparison is not fair, because a lot of people want to be hardcore with comfort. PC ports are so bad optimized at launch that become an annoyance.

right. a developer will not want their game to look good with an extra 1.8tf gpu power, 3 more Gbs of ram and 10% more cpu. Instead they will put their noses in the air, turn their cheek and say - nah fam we dont like you and we wont show what our artists/engineers/designers/colorists/etc can do with extra power.

it isnt about picking SIDES when developing a game that represents their company/employees.

lol

Flawless setup. You're playing your future self so hard.

You do know there is a PC version of Destiny 2 right .
Any company that want to show off the best version of there game will use PC .
Of course Destiny 2 should look better on Scorpio just question of how much .

Bungie went out of there way to make Destiny look good on Xbox One. There is still love between them and MS despite the marketing deals their publisher made with Sony.

I'm a bit nervous about this actually. We know that XB1/PS4 are the baseline for the remainder of the generation. That makes it hard to believe that Bungie/other devs are going to spend a lot of time retooling the engine to run at 60fps. I'm hoping I'm wrong, but it sounds like Pro and Scorpio owners are going to get a prettier version of the same game, with no earth shattering improvements.

It's fairly easy to amass a large collection of older games on Xbox, if that's any help. The combo of Games With Gold (4 games per month), EA Access (an inexpensive large bundle 40+ of EAs 360 and Xbox One games), the occasional freebies, the regular sales, and the upcoming Game Pass (Microsoft's Netflix for gaming, over 100 games for a monthly subscription) will provide a lot of content at a low cost.

I keep forgetting about Game Pass. IMO, that's a bigger announcement than Scorpio. The power doesn't impress me, the unique platform benefits do. Switch being portable, Game Pass giving a nice casual games as a service thing. That sells to me.

If Game Pass takes off, they NEED to go Netflix about it all and start offering their own titles. All it takes is Sony to start on that path and the library starts to look unsupported.

I'm looking forward to Destiny 2 on this. The new hw plus ditching ps3/360 from the get go should provide a stunning upgrade over the first Destiny.

not sure what you are expecting to see differently on your 4k tv from its compeditor the PS4 pro.
it will be the same game with the same graphical settings. one uses checkerboard and the other native while the difference def wont bee seen on a TV

The amount of people in this thread that keep harping on about PC gaming is ridiculous.

Do you people really not understand?

What do you mean do we not understand? Of course we understand. Just looking at it in reality it's not quite as much of an improvement on multiple fronts as expected. The value proposition compared to building a solid PC with all the benefits that brings isn't as impressive as many hoped. It's still really impressive, especially the VRAM. But for many that doesn't matter as much as Microsoft is essentially competing with themselves now in some ways.

Especially since there's been very few exclusives. So there's even less reason to own a console versus an open platform.

right, the poster said the company will not do anything more for the scorpio version vs the pro version ...[edit] because of promo rights bought by sony

Any reason you think xbox would be cross play with pc and not ps4 or both?

Imagine if we could all play together. I think they'll keep them separate though.

ok just watched letterheads reveal video and I couldn't help cringe.

"Microsoft have done it again"

"blew me away"

"never seen anything like this before"

according to him the Scorpio gpu is 50% more powerful than the pro. As expected it is jaguar upclocked yet they are giving this some absurd name. All this talk of dx12 (again) inside the gpu, i'm suprised the cloud wasn't mentioned.

I probably sound a bit negative, just feel these mid gen refreshes are stupid. They managed to get a 3 year old game running from 1080p 60fps to 4k 60fps on a GPUthat is 5 times more powerful than the OG one.

Is this thing supposed to reverse their fortunes? how much does a new console cost to research, produce and ship? We've seen the ps4 out selling the pro still. With the scorpio costing even more i'm sure the xbone will outsell the scorpio as well.

Forza 6 is not 3 years old. That screengrab looks just phenomenal. I'm not sure if you've seen 4k60 but it's amazing. Ledbetter can't be impressed our excited about this? Odd take. He was impressed by the amount of custom work MS put into this bespoke console.

The big comparison will be how a game stacks on scorpio compared to it's pc counter part. And in Destiny's case since their heritage is PC based you wonder how well it will b e optimized for both?

Especially when you look Dishonored on PRO, it still ran somewhat shit on the highest PC hardware.

Scaling third party games on Scorpio will be the real test especially if any of the dx12 stuff holds weight performance wise.

So the console is less powerful than expected. probably scales down the cost. but then I wonder, what is there to play on xbox. the only thing that would make sense would be an upcoming VR product.

What the hell are you talking about ? It's the same TF number that Microsoft confirmed . DF confirmed how easily it was to get a game running at 4k 60 ultra on it . Did you just ignore everything they say.

PC comparison is not fair, because a lot of people want to be hardcore with comfort. PC ports are so bad optimized at launch that become an annoyance.

You say that as a blanket statement which is very much not the case.

Also far too many people peg something as a bad port because they have no understanding of performance metrics. They think I have a PC with a decent GPU and a more powerful CPU therefore even though the Tflops on my GPU are about the same as a PS4 I should be able to play everything high/ultra at 60fps. When in reality they're going to be seeing near PS4 performance on a rig like that.

Your statement and many complaints often stem from misconceptions. PC players also aren't as "smart" or "tech savvy" as they would like to believe. Many of them don't engage in any of that critical thinking and are easily upset and complain when something doesn't run like magic.

Scorpio version will look and hit performance targets better than the Pro. The PC version will outclass both.

I would love love love that. I don't even think we'll get crossplay between Xbox and PC though.

Given that Sont is doing long term exclusive content again I think that's pretty much a confirmation of that not happening too.

Many of us are not PC gamers, nor do we care for becoming one. The power on offer with the optimization here is beyond impressive, especially for a console. I'll stick with what I love, thanks.

Anyone wanna take a stab at a release date? Phil himself has said they are father along than anyone other console he's been apart of and Digital Foundry said it feels like its 6 months away from release at this point. That would put us at a late September or October launch.

I'm still gonna say November just because I think the extra development time will lead to more games supporting Scorpio at launch which will be important. Another part thinks that MS would really like to get this console out on shelves ahead of RD2 or even Destiny 2 if given the opportunity. Maybe around Madden 18 or FIFA 18. Sports games are good console show pieces plus with those titles moving to Frostbite I bet they'll be able to take advantage of some of the DX12 features Scorpio has baked in.

Your ability to grasp of how any of this works is in direct competition for your ability to spell and use proper punctuation.

Speaking of Destiny 2, wonder what the chances of it being a Play Anywhere title are. Before you say Sony has the marketing on it, it happened with RE7 and that was Sony marketed too.

Sorry way off topic, just random thought I had reading all this Destiny 2 stuff lol

I wonder, did you watch the video and read the articles? What was revealed today is more powerful than what was expected.

There's a lot of amazing tech at play here.

Specs wise for a console this seems pretty decent, but it doesn't seem like the monster some were claiming it would be? At least to me. Feels like a Pro 1.5.

Regardless it's a huge boost over base Xbox One, which is a vast improvement. Though if you've been content where you are now I can't imagine seeing an average user jumping in.

People talking about MS moneyhatting Scorpio patches and high res texture packs for 3rd party AAA this fall but from everything I've heard they haven't even delivered the SDK or devkits yet...

As a pc gamer, this gives me a great way to keep playing with friends and family with a less compromised experience.

A lot of people forget that cross play with titles is not guarantee with the "play anywhere" initiative...especially with 3rd party games.

They made a 1.3 tf machine play and look the same on a 1.8tf machine. Same difference. But this time the 40% lower spec has marketing rights. I can see it happening. Yup.

The 50% reduction in CPU time for setting draw calls and what not, is nothing too shabby, but I believe GPU drive gfx pipelines that give back almost half of required CPU time are already possible on PS4 and Xbox One, if I recall correctly, but it needs love and affection from the devs. Sebbbi did a presentation that had a benchmark on Xbox One that had 250K independently moving objects with just 0.2 milliseconds of a single core CPU time for setting up the single draw call required for the scene:

Xbox Scorpio is a nice piece of hardware though. I just hope brute-force approach does not outweigh innovation because of incremental upgrades.

Slim to none since it's coming to PC as in it's own dedicated launcher like Battlenet, unless more info closer to launch indicates steam release which I doubt.

Clearly you don't understand.

We've been over this countless times.

Millions of people do not and will never play games on PC. It's just not going to happen.

So when discussing new console hardware where games will look and perform better than the other console, it doesn't matter what is happening with the PC version.

People don't give a shit. You know how many of my friends ran out and built gaming PCs after seeing what games could look like in 4k running on my PC?

None.

The guy playing COD/Battlefield/Madden doesn't give a shit about PC gaming.

Yeah, he probably doesn't give a shit about these higher tier more expensive pro consoles, but there a much better chance of that dude getting one of these if he constantly hears that his games look and run better on them.

God daayuumn that is ridiculous! I wish you the best of luck and hope you find a muuuch cheaper import option for launch.

Indeed it is thank you very much dude I will do my best

It's some bs alright.

Still haven't seen a Pro (imported mine), Xbox One S or PSVR here.

Plenty of expensive switches here though.

Yeah where are you from? I have seen tons of Xbox One S consoles around here
