The Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth+ |OT| 200 More Hours of Bad Keeper Runs

y'all should be ashamed
I feel like all the Keeper needs is to start with Greed's Gullet and he would be a perfectly good character. Theoretically anyways, since I haven't unlocked him yet.

I finally made it to Mom, first time ever, after 26 tries in a row.

Got within one shot of killing her. Couldn't even see the red health bar anymore. Foot comes down, kills me. I almost broke my fucking switch.

Maybe. Having the triple shot is so close to making him useful as is, at least.

Of course, after my last post I decide to do "one more run", and get some seriously insane luck.

First off, Ipecac on the first floor. I know it's risky, but I figure I'll see what happens. By the end of the run, I had bookworm, Technology AND Tech X, Halo of Flies plus another fly from a slot machine, the Habit, the Battery, the Stopwatch, Spoon Bender, and the kicker is that I was bombing the pots in Delirium's room and one gave me a Swallowed Penny!

Of course, I was dishing out so much damage that I only took a single hit in the fight anyway, but damn, that felt good.

Not sure if I'm just rusty or if the lack of a real dpad on the switch is making the game seem harder, struggled to make it out of basement 2. I haven't played BoI for about 18 month's though, so it could be that but i really miss the dpad on this thing as the buttons don't feel right.

Also had a couple bad runs in a row at the beginning with ru a wizard and the dunces hat showing up as well as other dodgy tear effects. Not a great first session on switch :/

Game has 'clicked' for me and now I am in love, obsessed, and just want more.

Played as Eve for first time and had an unbelievable time. Then I spent playing maybe an hour long Lazarus run and just...

This fucking game you guys.

I hate Ipecac and Dr Fetus. I just can't handle them, so much so that I just straight up skip em now :(

Do you, yes you, want to completely break the game to the point of absurdity?
Do you need that one Angel Item or Secret Room item?
Do you like infinite items, potentially by the second or third floor and are bothered by needing to get lucky RNG?

Woah boy do I have a gamebreak for you

1. Acquire Void. So basically pick Appollyon
2. Acquire Mystery Gift from the shop, succ
3. Acquire method to get infinite charges, Blank Card (succ) + Jera works fine, as does Sharp Plug + any HP up active (I used Prayer Card, Yum Heart would also work, as would Placebo + Full Health or Balls of Steel, or Book of Rev/Satanic Bible succed. Basically, you get the idea)
4. Enter the room with the pool you want to pull items from (Angel, Devil, Boss, Treasure, Secret)
5. Succ
6. ALL THE ITEMS

This is the most broken I have ever made the game. Blank Card + Jera at least requires you to get to the chest and find some batteries (and is currently bugged anyway). This is... this is something else entirely. I had 400 damage and basically every active item in the game.

Just take them, you'll learn to get better at using it. You won't regret it when you learn to use them because it makes the game easy. Plus you can afford to find every secret room and blast every tinted rock.

Got my 11th mom kill tonight (only 24 deaths so far too!) and happened to run into the Hush with a gnawed leaf and Mom's knife lol

I've played the game for 700+ hours. I will not learn to get better using them.

I just discovered a love for evil eye, an item I kind of hated before. Shot speed of 3, and 8 inch nails. Proceed to shoot a massive amount of nails with knockback across screen very quickly. Best Judas run ever.

Holy shit.

Lazarus run. I got this weapon that let me shoot 4
laser pink circles
. I plowed through that run and through Mom's Heart.

But shit, I opened the chest for the ending before walking into a demon door that opened up after the fight and im sure i missed something valuable in there. Shit.

Ipecac is fine. That's not a hard item to use, just treat it like you would a grenade launcher in a FPS and pace your shots to make sure they are far enough from you.

In other news, despite breaking the game wide open and getting basically all the items, I still haven't seen Buddy in a Box. The only new item I haven't seen (Edit: after writing half of this post, this was a lie).

Just a bad string of luck in the shop, I guess.

So yea, other than Buddy in a Box, here's my reviews of these items from the last week of using them.

Bozo - For whatever reason I've gotten this item within the first few floors in about 75% of my most recent runs. I've checked and it's not broken and set to be ultra common, so just weird luck. So it's the one I'm most familiar with. The piddly damage up is alright, but the actual effects have only really been noticed once when the random rainbow poop actually saved my life, so thanks for that. This is also one of the best looking of the booster items, even if it's slightly out of theme (it still fits the game fine)

Lil Delirium - Such a fun item. It stays transformed long enough to not be obnoxious, but constantly changing makes you aware of it at all times. I found most of the time it was very useful, turning into Incubus, Rotten Baby or Lil Brim. I've never had the Bob's Brain or BBF transformations blow me up, either, so I don't think you need to be that careful with it. Excellent sprite work on the item, as well. But I'm bias because Lil Delirium was my most wanted item to be added officially, so I'm quite pleased.

Mystery Gift - This is the single most broken item in the game, probably in the history of the series. This and Void makes the old break of Pandora's Box + Void look like child's play. The ability to spawn infinite items from any pool you want but the third or fourth floor. Whoa boy. I don't even know what use this item has being not broken, I guess a free Devil or Angel item is pretty cool. Also a Pokemon Reference is always neat, even if it's just in name only (and the name is an intended reference apparently).

Angry Fly - This is an early game item that I've only ever gotten very late, so I'm not really sure how it's best used. It feels like it's a great item on early floors, but late game it's kind of useless since later chapters have you generally fighting one or two bosses in rooms, rather than a ton of regular enemies. Also not counting towards Beelzebub screwed me out of flying at a key floor where I desperately needed flight. TYRONE PLS.

Black Hole - Another Booster item that I likely found way later than it was intended to be. I guess it's useful? But by the Womb (when I found it) I was already well built and had a useful active (Void with Mystery Gift lel), so I never really got the chance to use this item to its fullest. It was SUPER annoying to use during the break though, since I had to throw every time I used my active, or Sharp Plug wouldn't activate. But that's not a fault of the item, every throwable active would be like that.

Broken Modem - No thank you. Nope. Never again. Not a chance. This gets thrown into the "Cursed Eye" pile of "do not touch, ever, there is no run where this works"

Fast Bombs - Fast Bombs + Golden Bomb is comedy. That's about all there is to it. It's a basic item that does what it says on the tin and has its uses as more of a convenience than anything useful in combat. Not every item added needs to do 10 thousand things all at once. The game needs basic items like this for balance.

Buddy in a Box - From what I've seen on streams, this item is decent. The Buddy can often have good attacks and great tears, and it's finally a purpose for the hundreds of co-op babies they keep adding that hardly anyone has ever seen. Would I take it over other shop items given the choice? I'm not entirely sure.

Sprinkler - I guess I lied when I said Buddy in a Box was the only item I hadn't used yet, because this is another one. I've never even seen it spawn. Reddit seems to love it, so I guess it's pretty good. Seems like an excellent item for Greed mode, except it isn't in the Greed pool (none of the Booster items are probably as an oversight). Oh well.

As far as trinkets go

Hair Pin - This is Isaac and Appollyon's new best friend. Free full charge every boss fight? Yes please. The sleeper hit of the booster.

Wooden Cross - Seen it, never picked it up. Seems kind of niche, but I'm not going to throw it away if I can smelt it or something.

Butter - This seems like an item meant for Plus' release, since they added all those reroll machines into empty secret rooms. I'm disappointed at the graphics on this one, though. It's kind of ugly for being an item made by Edmund. I'm pretty forgiving on the graphics of the other Booster items, but this one has no excuse.

The Draw 3 card is useful, the other ones are "eh" although that might be because I don't have what they do memorized so I just use them whenever. They likely have better uses than using them in empty rooms or rooms with enemies that I didn't need to use a card against.

If you get swallowed penny - which is relatively common from pots or golden poops on the first two floors - Keeper runs are fine, and the second you hit a blood donation machine you have tons of cash.

Keeper runs are also salvageable without getting swallowed penny if you get some combination of piggy bank / nuns habit / battery upgrades to keep wooden penny active going / drop cash on hit cycle going.

I just simultaneously beat mom and got killed by her. I had like 4 little dudes following me around shooting and my shots turned into bombs OH and I had the whipshot and 360° shooting. I'll never get lucky like that again.

P1jtFNz.jpg

You can see her exploding in the background.

You had a pretty nice build going, although I don't pick up Lard (too big of a speed loss) and that active is a waste of money.

The reason your shots were exploding was because of Explosivo (the item to the right of the mushroom). It causes your tears to turn into sticky bombs that stick to enemies and grow before exploding.

It has its uses, but it's not for every build and is usually more of a hassle than it's worth.

Picked this up today after being skeptical of the game (even though I love roguelikes and EtG). Holy balls was I wrong, it really is great and I'm so glad it's on the Switch. Handheld is perfect for this.

Hehe nahhh, you'll probably get something even crazier next time. Such is the Binding of Isaac!

When the aliens come for us, they will read stuff like this and be thoroughly confused.

Any solid tips for a starter to the game? I keep hitting a wall around the 3rd or 4th floor, I haven't even gotten to Mama yet...

Just wanted to say - ever since putting this into my Switch, I legit haven't stopped playing it. It is SO SO fun. I had my first successful run yesterday and it was so fantastic.

So is my goal to start running challenges and unlocking all characters or is there "more" to the base runs?

Me right now

This was a cheesy run. I did exactly one room in the entire run as Lost. Delirium's room. It was on a victory lap that I save/loaded to cheese. It started as an Eden run. Then a Dark Judas run. And finally, the Lost. But it's done.

I'd like to thank Satan for giving me Holy Mantle. And a round of applause for the Cursed room with Blank Card in it. And that room of Globin in the Void where I blank card/jerad your trinket filled chests until I got the Missing Poster, and then a second one later as insurance. Thanks guys. And of course the shop keeper who sold me Chaos to make this all possible.

Mega Satan, Greed and Greedier to go, this may have actually been the easiest of those...

It was a crazy run though. I started with junk on Eden, second floor found a 1 dice room and rerolled into a great build and the run snowballed from there. My heart was pounding through the 10 second Delirium fight. I had 50 damage and a spare Missing Poster and I could always go get more and I was still super tense and nervous.

Hopefully this doesn't scare the new players in this thread. But that feeling that the game is always an uphill battle never really goes away. I have 150 hours and I've been working towards this achievement off and on for the last week or so and the only reason I beat it was because I abused the heck out of the game's mechanics to basically skip the majority of the hard parts of the task.

Oh, there's more. If by "successful", you mean that you killed Mom and got an ending, take a look at your stats screen. Note how it says "Mom kills: 0"

There's plenty more to do in the base runs.

The challenges are good to pick away at for a break now and again, and they all unlock stuff to use in the main runs. Be warned: some of them are really hard.

Beat my first daily challenge in a pretty funny way. I was getting bad luck all run and was down to 1 black heart, but found a bible on the second to last level and was trying to sprint to Mom without dying. On the way there, I found a room with a dice imprint on the floor and stepped on it, not knowing it would take my item. So here I am with one black heart and no bible. On the way to Mom, however, I found a gnawed leaf. Okay game - if you're going to play cheap, I will too.

Nicalis does not care even though they took our money with the game
I'm fine with waiting, but really bummed about the booster packs not making it to the consoles. Still hoping there will be a final patch after the last booster pack is released (whenever that is), but...

Stuff thats never explained that helps generally make runs better;
  • every floor has 2 secret rooms you can get to by bombing walls - one is usually a 'bridge' room between two or three others, and one is usually at the entrance room to the boss in a place that wont connect to any other room
  • bombing shopkeeper corpses often drops money
  • bombing blue fires often drops blue hearts
  • bombing off-coloured rocks often drop blue hearts, as well as chests and unique pickups
  • bombing skulls often drops blue hearts, or spawns a monster
  • if you find the bible, and you think youre going to reach mom, keep it because it will one shot her
  • sacrifice rooms (an empty room with spikes in the middle, usually some skulls as background decor) will give a chance of rewards each heart you sacrifice - if you have a bunch of red hearts spare, keep taking hits; when you get a wave of troll bombs you will want to stop unless you are trying to do a mega satan run, because it will spawn a boss
  • heamaestisis (or whatever) pill used in a secret room containing a white or black heart spawns multiple white or black hearts

Why won't this go live in Australia :'(

Can I just buy this from the Mexico or American eshop and then play as normal?

Edit: This is driving me up the wall. The eshop keeps asking me to re-verify my card details.

I always take devil room items. Should I not do that in order to get angel items?

Some devil item rooms are so good its dumb NOT to take them if you see them, and only a few angel room items are really good, so your call really.

You can still get to an angel room even after taking a devil deal via sacrifice rooms
