Oscar Voter Reveals Her Brutally Honest Ballot: 'La La Land' "Not Memorable"

Why would you ever have that expectation?

I mean.. It's 2017, Five.

Well now we're getting philosophical. Or maybe it's like in Arrival, where he understands the way th—

Yeah, it's funny. A lot of people will use the word "pretentious" to make their empty criticism sound smarter than it actually is.

Which is, itself...

Find it funny being used for La La Land, too.

La La Land has no pretensions about what it is, it knows exactly what it is.

This lady is an example why the Oscar can kiss my ass. Arrival just sucked? What kind of a movie critic would say that to critique a movie? It didn't suck and it was a very unique movie that discussed an important aspect that we take for granted in a lot of sci-fi movies and that's language and how powerful it can be. Moonlight for me should get the best picture because quite honestly I have never seen any movie like it before. I felt I was watching real people and their struggles and I felt very emotionally connected to the characters as well. The filmography was incredible and acting was on a level I have also rarely seen.

La La Land is an unbelievable love story

as in, I didn't believe for a second that the two leads were in love the whole movie

bad chemistry, bad songs, bad throwbacks to better movies

in my opinion, at least

Maybe the just thought Arrival wasn't shit. There. That is the extent of their critique. It does not have to be more than that.

There's a very good chance Sculli is an Academy Member and just writes in "Avatar made a shit-ton of money" for every category.

I actually agree with a lot of that. Though I'd pick Moonlight as Best pic and Casey for best actor.

Other than that, having watched all the same movies, I think that's pretty spot on. Hell or High Water was pretty fucking good and Jeff Bridges absolutely deserves all the fucking acclaim for his role in it

lol of course GAF and all its sci-fi nerds would grasp onto the arrival thing. Jesus Christ, it wasn't that good. Not everyone is gonna fucking love it.

Wish these 'anonymous voters' could put their names behind these hyperbolic articles, otherwise they may as well be fabricated shock pieces.

I thought Arrival was decent but I can understand someone really not liking it. Honestly, I've seen Star Trek TNG episodes that are better than the movie. Arrival is elevated by its cinematography and acting, but at the end of the day it's not a particularly groundbreaking Sci-Fi film with some unique message. Hell, Interstellar had the same themes it was just more in your face about it.

Only thing I learned from her opinion is that I really need to see Hell or High Water.

Fun thread but this Oscar voter only wound up picking winners for two categories that will actually take home the prize on Sunday... Cinematography and Adapted Screenplay.

I believe becoming part of the voting membership requires either being nominated for an Oscar, or being nominated by an existing voting member. It basically reinforces certain demographics in the voting membership: those who live and work primarily in Hollywood.
Well shit, guess I gotta settle for the BAFTAs then :p

I like some of what she said. She's right about La La Land. It's another film that is a Hollywood jerk off. It will win and be slightly remembered better than The Artist due to being more of an American film. While, I'll actually agree. I think Hell or High Water is a finely made film that will be appreciated more as time goes on. It's the best film nominated I feel from top to bottom. Other films do bits and pieces better, but this is the only one I felt with the full package.

She is also right for Viola Davis on supporting Actress. Bit of a stupid protest vote, but she sure as fuck ain't wrong about studios using it to push an act in something easily deserving the Lead Nom, for an easier win elsewhere.

Now where I feel she was wrong is Nocturnal Animals and her hate boner for Arrival. I get she hated Arrival, but it shouldn't disqualify it from cinematography. And with NA, his entire point in the role is to be hated. I'll be honest, Aaron was fucking scary as all hell in that. Same with Elle where her "This has to happen this way or it's wrong".

There's a very good chance Sculli is an Academy Member and just writes in "Avatar made a shit-ton of money" for every category.

Can a man write in Avatar in 2018?

I'd let GAF know what my Oscar picks are. I'm a man of the people.
Oh god, the Artist.

Does anyone talk about that movie ever?
I did around Christmas time. One of the TV channels were airing it and I said to my dad "Hey, remember that French silent film that won best picture at the Oscars?" but he didn't even know it existed.

That was the last time I talked about it.

You really should. It's excellent.

You're all welcome again for The Artist.

Looking back... the year's noms were just shit. Extremely Cloud and Close, War Horse, The Help. It's competition would be Money Ball and Tree of Life. Weinstien probably didn't need to spend much that year.

No one is saying you can't dislike arrival or that it isn't possible that someone can dislike it, it's just that she didn't even say why she hated it so much. Hell you gave more reasons than she did technically.

Ah, yeah, well, she isn't expected to get a review in this isn't she? Not dickishly asking, just I'm not aware if THR publish this type of stories with certain expectations. Maybe she can give reasons, but doesn't feel like it?

There was nothing pseudo sci fi about Arrival.. it was a human story. Like most good sci fi.

It's Contact for dummies. But hey, that's just me.

Moneyball is a good movie. Not Best picture, but good

La La Land >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> (just keep holding on that key for like 10 minutes) > Crash > The Artist.

popular opinion seems to be so allergic to movies about hollywood. always assuming that they're just made as a conspiracy for the industry to pat each other on the back. it's a very well made musical. Rather this win than most other movies being nominated.
