NeoGAF Games of the Year 2016 Awards

How does the affinity thing list work?
If it still works the same way it worked when I wrote it many years ago, it looks at all the votes, then calculates a "similarity score" to other users for you based on how games placed on their lists compared to yours, using a patented Durante-handwaving-it algorithm of dubious statistical rigor. It then ranks users based on that similarity score.

Sure, I think that's a fair critique. But that means the quality of the game isn't consistent and it's the nature of the content that drags it down. The fact that it doesn't do anything new isn't really that much of a factor right?
I personally give games a bonus if they do something new which I enjoy, but I don't have an issue if it's just a good one of something I enjoy.

And doing something well in an underserved genre is great. I think Hitman should be looked at by publishers as taking a not-mega-popular genre and making a very solid entry to serve that audience.

Deus Ex in Top15 at least, mission accomplished
Amen! Glad to see it did not go completely unnoticed.

Great top five as well. May was one hell of a month. I have played seven games in the top ten, that might be the most so far in a given year. I got into FFXV and The Last Guardian to vote on them though.

Inside is number 9 on the best of the year but not on the most downloaded. Odd.
If it came out as a retail (boxed) release it wouldn't appear on that list. We may have incorrectly (not) marked it as download-only. Updates are being made to the awards posts as we speak.

Completely forgot to vote this year. Sorry The Last Guardian, I let you down. Though I would have struggled to come up with even 5 games I liked enough last year.

Fantastic list good job everyone. I'm ecstatic to see Titanfall 2 made the Top 10. I was worried not enough GAF members had given it a chance. Outstanding from both a campaign and multiplayer perspective

what a dreadfully boring list/year

I didn't participate because I haven't played much in 2016, but looking at these games I kinda understand why now

I played most of my recommendations, they just didn't make the cut. The big exception is Oxenfree which I still haven't got around to even though it's probably right up my alley.

Even my affinity voters, I don't really agree with!

I accept being different in taste from most of the folks, here, though.

I have no strong feelings about number one. I don't like Uncharted at all, but many people do, and I don't think 2016 was a very good year with many games worth getting super-heated for in a passionate defense of their good qualities, so whatever.

All the data is fun to look through, though. Thanks to everyone who put this together!

So comparing this with NeoGAF's most anticipated list for 2016 we should be able to figure out the Most Surprising and the Most Disappointing games last year.

Uncharted 4 won MA and GOTY so least surprising there = 0

No Man's Sky was 10th MA and 40th GOTY = -30

Street Fighter V was 11th MA and 22nd GOTY = -11

The Division was 13th MA and 33rd GOTY = -20

Mirror's Edge Catalyst was 14th MA and 69th GOTY = -55

Quantum Break was 15th MA and 42nd GOTY = -27

Zero Time Dilemma was 17th Ma and 41st GOTY = -24

DOOM was 32nd MA and 2nd GOTY = +30

Overwatch was 25th MA and 3rd GOTY = +22

Witness was 30th MA and 8th GOTY = +22

Inside was 145th MA and 9th GOTY = +136

Hitman was 36th MA and 10th GOTY = +26

Titanfall 2, Blood & wine, Pokemon S&M, Stardew Valley and Battlefield 1 wasn't on the MA but was on the GOTY. Some of the weren't announced before 2016 so keeping that in mind, Titanfall 2 would be the most surprising as it ranked the highest followed by Blood & wine and Pokemon S&M.

The biggest Jump from MA to GOTY was

Inside =+136
DOOM=+30
Hitman=+26

and the Most Disappointing were

Mirror's Edge Catalyst = -55
No Man' Sky = -30
Quantum Break = -27

It's easily noted across the internet, RDR love has nothing but increased with the years, if GAF makes a GOTY 2010 re-vote it would win easily, and I say that as someone that has ME2 as his #1 game of the last gen.

LOL GAF representing the real world. Come on. Can you show me where it's "Noted all across the Internet?

Doesn't change the fact that Neogaf is predominantly a Sony fan base, so the result was predictable. I never played UC4, but from what most people say, it plays far too safe. It's the fourth iteration of the series and apparently does absolutely nothing new from the previous games, and is considered slower and weaker story-wise from its predecessors. No game should win game of the year for that, regardless of how beautiful it is. Overwatch should have won for no other reason than it is a brand new IP that became an instant smash hit. You have subjectivity, and then you have hard fact.

Not hurt, just humored.

I don't know where you found these "most people", but they're clearly not the majority. UC4 does nothing new is factually false. It's the first game in the series with open levels, driveable levels, ability to go in and out of stealth, and the hook mechanic which makes the gameplay much more fun. It's also considered the best story in the game, by a lot of reviewers.

People keep saying that Uncharted 4 won because Neogaf is just a Sony fanbase. So why did Uncharted 4 also win most critics GOTY, most audience GOTY from a ton of other websites, and why was it the highest rated game on Metacritic in 2016? Maybe, just maybe, it's actually a good game.

Whew, Uncharted fans can finally sleep well tonight knowing the critics are a minority.

What do you mean? Uncharted has more critics GOTY awards and the most audience GOTY awards:

Uncharted 4: A Thief's End - 141

The Critics' Picks - 85

The Readers' Picks - 56

Overwatch - 91

The Critics' Picks - 82

The Readers' Picks - 9

RE4 made the top spot for horror?

I have mixed feelings about that. Like I know the remaster was released on PS4, but I feel we should be recognizing games that come out that year exclusively. Remasters should be a more of an honorable mention kind of thing. But that's like, my opinion man.

Game releasing in '05 taking the wind out of the sail for a game in 2016 just feels odd. But the same could be said for all systems and categories.

A good list. UC4 was a very good game, and definitely deserved the #1 spot. Been saving Doom and Overwatch for this year, though :(.

I want to see how my TOP10 list did in the gaf consensus.

1. Salt & Sanctuary - 54. in GAF
2. Uncharted 4 - 1. in GAF
3. The Witness - 8. in GAF
4. FFXV - 6. in GAF
5. Ratchet & Clank - 11. in GAF
6. Gravity Rush Remastered - Not counted in full list? But since it got 121 points, I assume spot 40 or 41.
7. Umineko - 107. in GAF
8. World of Final Fantasy - 48. in GAF
9. Steins;Gate 0 - 55. in GAF
10. Trackmania Turbo - 104. in GAF

A lot of my picks didn't crack top 20. Mostly sad for S&S, it's a truly marvelous game.

Yeah, 2016 was not the best year for horror games. I usually have at least two on my Top 10 list, but zero this year. :(

2017 though...I have a good feeling about it.
Well, there were some interesting and worthwhile VR horror titles. Something like A chair in A Room for the Vive should absolutely make the list. But naturally it won't since only very few people have a Vive and an even smaller percentage of those with the headset played the game.

Uncharted 4 is just good game, nothing close to GOTY in my opinion. For me it's just same barely enjoyable AAA console TPS like RotTR and Gears 4, the only difference that it's not available on PC. But people blindly love Naughty Dog, and ND sure deserves this love after Uncharted 2, but all their games after U2 is not that amazing as some people tend to say. Much more polished in terms of details and visuals, but not amazing gameplay and story wise.

RE4 wasn't eligible for the main list, but we do make re-releases eligible for the genre and platform lists. If nothing else I guess it was a bad year for horror, or (more likely) the genre really isn't that popular.

I'm actually somewhat surprised Uncharted 4 was number one. I thought I had seen more negativity towards the game in the past few months. I honestly expected Doom or Overwatch to take the top spot. I enjoyed Uncharted 4, thought it was a nice end to Drake's story, but it was missing something for me that made the PS3 games such standouts. Glad people enjoyed it though! Really excited to play The Lost Legacy.

Well done as always, Cheesemeister, timetokill and ASilentProtagonist!

Also, more people should play Headlander.

Cool people:

I will say it's evident looking back over the years that unsurprisingly Xbox fans are certainly the biggest minority here. That seems to be the norm on the Internet though outside of maybe Twitter

The Last Guardian cracking the top 5 is absolutely insane to me, but about what I expected. Uncharted is a predictable populist pick, and it's hard to act surprised that it won out amongst this community.

Glad to see Hitman got some love, though.

You are acting if GAF is some bubble. Uncharted was the highest rated game on MC last year and sold over 9 million copies and TLG won GotY from the likes of Edge and Easy Allies and made tons of best of lists.

I don't blindly love Naughty Dog, I thought Uncharted 3 was a bad game. Uncharted 4 is still my GOTY. Why is it so hard for people to understand that different opinions exist?

Uncharted 4 has the one of the most fun gameplay in the genre, I got bored with GOW4 less than half way into the game because of how stale it was. I like the game for it's gameplay.

So anyone who loved ND is blind? GTFO with this shit, the press also gave UC4 the most GOTY awards, your opinion is not fact.

These posts and the "Sonygaf" nonsense , people are really in their bubble. ND is well reveered across the industry, not just GAF
