Finally some good Supergrafx news for me. I sent back my broken console after exhausting all my options on it, and my friend in Japan managed to pick up a replacement for a similar price. The console arrived today and I tried both Ghouls n Ghosts and 1941 on the new console and both run perfectly (huzzah!). Can't wait to replay GnG yet again, next up is to get this console RGB modded. So glad this saga is finally over!

The finish is different and the triggers are missing the metal rod.

I got the Smash GC controller and it's great. Unless you play Melee to the point of getting athritis, you won't care (or notice) the difference.

Later model original GameCube controllers were like this as well. I have 2 that I bought in 2006 a few months before the Wii came out and they were just like this. It's usually fine but the mechanism of the trigger press feels worse, and there's a way you can press it where it sorta gets stuck.

Cords are way longer on the Smash4 & white Wii controllers though which is nice.

Heading to Osaka in a few hours and super excited to shop for some retro Japanese gaming gems.

Post some photos of what you get.

"I'm cute, and I'm a controller too!" :D
If I'm not mistaken, you can still buy it on eBay, pretty much for its retail price (around 40/50 euros). I remember getting mine at the PAL DQVIII launch, and it was fairly available in regular videogame stores too, other than GameStop.

Edit - Well, I wanted to double check, and whereas there is a buy-it-now in Japan that goes for that kind money, there's an extra 20 for shipping to be considered. Oddly enough, US auctions all seem to run for higher prices.

This is my understanding as well. Smash controllers are the same as the Japanese white GCN controllers that were sold all throughout the Wii's lifespan.

Looked around for an official Portland Retro Gaming Expo thread but couldn't find one, I assume the Retro thread would be a decent place to show off my haul from this year:

Of all the stuff I saw / bought this year, I was irrationally excited to find all of the McDonald's Super Mario Bros. 3 toys. I had Mario and the Koopa Paratroopa growing up, but now I have the whole set. Also really happy I held out for the Namco PS1 Arcade stick, the prices have really gone up online for one.

aw man, been a minute since id seen the other happy meal mario toys! and i forget what system that namco stick is for, any good?

So, Ninja Gaiden fans.

If I were to do only one of the following, which would be best:

Ninja Gaiden (Xbox)
Ninja Gaiden Black
Ninja Gaiden Sigma
Ninja Gaiden Sigma + (Vita ver.)

Assume I'm fine with both handheld and console equally for the sake of ease.

I couldn't get into Black back in the day on Xbox but want to give this game a shot.

Black. I have nothing against Sigma myself but I never felt the extra content was all that great, Black just felt like the tighter of the games (in my opinion).
I'm one of the people that like the Vita version as well, but the 30FPS frame rate will piss off many fans of the series who have come to expect 60FPS. It rarely if ever dropped from 30FPS from what I remember, which is good I guess.

As for NG2, go for the 360 version should you get it. Sigma 2 on the PS3 nerfed a few bits, especially the difficulty (on normal at least), and whatever you do avoid the Vita version like the plague (its one of the few games I can credit to running in slow motion at times)

I've only played Sigma but Black doesn't have the annoying bikers or the boring Rachel sections so I suppose it can only be better.

I remember there was a recent thread about the ninja gaiden series and two posters got in a fight because one insisted the enemy placement in Sigma was completely different from Black and the other insisted it was exactly the same.. It was rather surreal.

Thanks for the input. I just bought a copy of NG Black. Cheap! I'm so used to looking at older stuff where anything in the US is $$$, nothing is available in Canada, and Japan is the only place to buy anything for a good price.

Some cases like this are kinda hard. Sigma likely gets a lot of praise due to being a PS3 exclusive during the bad-old-"no games"-years. The graphics in Sigma are nicer though. I was looking at youtube videos and all I kept hearing was graphics, graphics, graphics, and "yeah the difficulty might be different IDK." Retro-GAF input is definitely appreciated.

I'll might also get the Vita version if I like Black when it goes on sale on PSN.

Super Potato in Den Den Town (the main one), Osaka had the trial/preview version of Chrono Trigger (white box) which I will more than likely purchase before my trip is over... But what really caught my eye was the grey box Chrono Trigger VJUMP contest version. WTF? I didn't know there was a grey box version?! I have the metallic rose/pink box one (see picture below).

FYI depends on the shop but they usually don't like people taking pictures in the store. You can probably get away with it as a tourist but you might get store employees barking at you.

I asked, they said it was fine. lol. I usually check/look for signs.

SFC boxes are so much cooler than SNES game boxes. Same goes for every Japanese Nintendo system pre-Wii vs. the North American versions.

Why didn't NOA just copy NCL?

There seemed to be an emphasis on unified branding outside of Japan. I think NOA wanted kids and parents to be able to identify an SNES game or accessory down the aisle 30' away.

Parts of Sigma definitely looks worse than Black though. Like the water effects.

NG/Black on the Xbox looked amazing back in the day, still looks amazing now. The Vita port also has a couple of standout moments early in the game - the second chapter with all the colour of the woods and surrounding town look bloody amazing on an OLED Vita. Pity most of the rest of the game takes place in an urban environment.

grabbed a few titles today while grabbing food:

I shockingly saw Shinobi ps2 at my local games store yesterday. Grabbed that and GTA III on OG Xbox. GTA III in 480p doesn't look too bad. I forgot how bad the gun play is in this game though, lol. I plan on giving Shinobi some time this weekend.

I found a pretty neat retro video store in Carytown near VCU in Richmond, I've like never been in one before so it was a new experience...

I ended up picking up a new Game Boy Color (wanted to play some old GBC games I own like Lil' Monsters and Dragon Quest Monsters) and a copy of the original Brave Fencer Musashi for the PS1. They had plenty of cool looking stuff offered up like various music CDs for Gradius and Dragon Quest, as well as Rival Schools for the Dreamcast. Is Brave Fencer worth much? I got it for 40$ but I recall it being in demand.

They also had a bunch of neat game related crafts designed by VCU students, I didn't buy any though but there was this neat drawing of Team Rocket I was tempted to grab as well as the knit Wobbuffet hat.

Finally they had a wishlist where they'd call you if a certain game came in, I'm hoping to finally score Goemon 64, and the two Snowboard Kids!

Is it any better than the JVC X'eye? I saw one of those going for $200 CAD recently, kinda regret sleeping on it.

Build quality and design (imo) is nicer in the original Wondermega (RG1), and I think it has some Karaoke stuff built in but as previously mentioned the downside is it tops out at S-Video without modding it.

The 2nd generation Wondermega (RG2) is very similar to the X'EYE except it has wireless controllers. They do RGB video.

For me, it's mostly about the striking aesthetics of the model 1 WonderMega that I find very appealing. The western versions/model 2 look like ass.

So my dad recently reacquired an Atari 2600 from his youth, and brought it back home. He wanted to hook it up to our CRT, but the RCA plug on the Atari wouldn't connect anywhere.

I did some digging and it looks like I need to get an RCA female to F-type male adapter, essentially changing the plug to a coax. What I want to know is whether or not this method will work, and if anyone has any experience with something similar.

I'm really excited to check out some of the games that he has. Donkey Kong, Frogger, Asteroids, Yar's Revenge... He has about 30 or so.

I think you went to Bits and Pixels. I love that shop. Before I moved to CA, I dumped most of the games and DVDs I knew I won't be missing and got a nice chunk of store credit out of it. Used it to buy a CIB NES gray zapper Action Set, a GBA, and a bunch of games.

Stay away from Tech Exchange. They got a better selection but the Customer Service is shit and they don't completely clean and test the systems and controllers. I bought a Genesis there with a wonky cartridge contact and a shitty ac adapter. I opened the Genesis and it was dusty as hell. I also bought a six button controller from them and when I took it out of the bag it was taped in two spots.

i rocked the original shinobi in the arcade with one quarter. but i heard ps2 it's pretty damn hard.

Hiruko was such an asshole in Shinobi PS2. I was decent enough at the game to get to the final boss but never beat him.

If only Youtube was around in 2002 for me to follow strats.

Yes that will absolutely work. It's going to look ugly but it will work (because RF is an ugly signal)

GTA III is my favorite game of all time, but yeah, the aiming kinda sucks. The controller setup on the Xbox makes drivebys a pain to do also. But the Xbox version does have the option to use your own music on the hard drive as a radio station. The soundtrack is fantastic, but after playing through the game 10+ times, I can do without hearing Rush Rush for the millionth time.

The PS2 version is a lot different than the arcade game. It's closer to something like Devil May Cry.

I've got one of those, but the coating has gone sticky on it after years of alternating use and collecting dust. Anyone have any idea what to do with it other then stripping the coating off?

I was replying to one of your pickup posts that had Shinobi ps2 in it. I assumed you had played it, lol.

I played the first level and beat the choppa then stopped. I played it back to back with Ninja Gaiden Black on og Xbox. I'll admit I was a ps2 fanboy back in the day but wow, NG looks great in 480p!

At release, Ninja Gaiden on Xbox made me genuinely wonder how next gen consoles could get any better. It had face melting visuals for an SD console game.

yeah, i haven't got to it yet (though i should being a shinobi fan). i think i'm intimidated by hard difficulty games bc i have so much to play now i tend to shift towards the easier titles just to get through them lol. (haven't touched bloodborne or demon souls, still shrink wrapped)

the most difficult game i beat was ikari warriors arcade w a quarter and megaman 1 on nes. by the time i got to ps2, aside from a few missions on GTA III, most games i played weren't too difficult. i think i avoided shinobi the first time around after reading the reviews of difficulty. lol but i will have the courage to get to it now that i'm older =)

The Game Boy Color I picked up seems super solid, played some Robopon on it (surprised the cart still works though I've yet to see if the additional clock functions and KISS stuff are working still) and it was a blast from the past.

Is there any good way to capture footage from a Game Boy, like some sort of USB plug-in someone has made that puts the picture on your PC?

Not really, from the gameboy itself. you could do a pretty hefty mod (one i'm not at all familiar with, but assume exists), or look for alternative solutions such as a gameboy player.
