August 2016 NPD (U.S. Hardware) Predictions - Closes September 8th

How many do you think CoD sells?

BTW B3 shipped in 2012 about 15 million units... did you really thinks it crossed 20 million???

They announced that 15 million shipment in May 2012 and there was still about one and half years to launch of BF4 from that point of time so yes there is pretty big probability that it shipped over 20 million.

Are you referring to the Wii U drop YoY?
In terms of MoM, it's been averaging ~6k/week since May this year.

Nah, just meant the Wii U difference was much lower compared to my prediction.

Now you mention it, I'm tryna remember if Wii U was about 40-70k this time last year.

Ah, gotcha.

Aug 2015: 42.1k

It is neither in the NPD TOP10 Sales of 2012 or 2013. And first half of 2013 it sold 579,013 units in Europe.

I really have a hard time beliving it reached 20m after the 15m announce.

I can do better research if you wish with actual Europe and NPD data for 2012 and 2013 if you want.

Remember BF4 launched in 2013.

Glad that Aqua is back with numbers.
PS4 had a dead month as expected, flat on July.
Xbox One S didn't really have strong numbers anyway, sub 300k is an ok debut. For the rest of year I think that Sony has September, November and December in the bag (unless Microsoft takes extreme measures with further deep price cuts). October is more open and uncertain. BF1 will sell tons of PS4 as well but MS has many bundles and GOW4 (although we'll see what kind of reception it's going to have).

BTW B3 shipped in 2012 about 15 million units...

No, it didn't.

It shipped 17 million by end of September 2012.

And was at 12 million by end of 2011, this mean it has shipped FIVE MILLION in the first 9 months of 2012. That's a lot, and show how good Battlefield 3 legs were.

5 million in 3 quarter is an avg of 1.65m per quarter, of course there are quarter lower and bigger than others, but the last quarter is usually one of the biggest if not the biggest thanks the holidays sales.

So yes, Battlefield 3 has easy sold over 20 million.

EDIT: Just saw it reached 15 million in May. So, this mean it shipped June to September 2 million. Indeed like said, VERY strong legs.

If it shipped those numbers in low months holidays was most likely bigger, it has most likely sold almost 20 million ONLY in 2012. So yes, no way it has not reached 20 million in 2013/2014.

Not sure people realize just how much bigger COD is than anything outside of GTA in a given year.

You're not just talking a big % higher than the next Shooter on the ranking list, you're actually talking about multipliers.

I'd expect COD to do at least 2x the sales of the #2 shooter this year. Anything closer would be a huge win for that second place game.

Edit: talking US disc sales here

so year after that shipment info release it was still selling over half million in EU and in non holiday season (first half of 2013)? Must have sold pretty well during holiday season 2012 then. Then when you factor how Battlefield franchise is strong also on PC I am actually even more surer that it has shipped over 20 million.

Edit. oh it seems there was also shipment update after 15 million. 17 million by end of september 2012 so yes BF3 absolutely shipped 20 million lifetime.

Edit: talking US disc sales here

I talk about overall worldwide sales, and Battlefield is HUGE on PC.

And even then, i don't said Battlefield 1 will outsell COD Infinite Warfare. Worldwide on all platform, COD will still win, but they are gonna be close.

P.S
And i also know you are not talking about me, but was just for clarify.

Btw PS4 Slim is out of stock on Amazon, restock on September 22th.
I wonder how big their stock allocation is for the Pro considering it's getting really strong sales and it still has to sell out.

Close-er maybe, but probably not close.

But then again, depends on how one defines "close" I guess.

Black Ops III sold 22 million by end of March 2016.

Talking about 2016 sales, it sold in USA about 1.85 million only at retail, as you know, for the first 3 months, and it sold over 200k at retail in UK the first 2 months (Jan and Feb).
So i think it easy sold 3-3.5 million the first 3 months of 2016, and this mean Black Ops III has sold something like 18.5-19 million in 2015, most likely.

Black Ops series is much, MUCH bigger than any new COD name. I expect Infinite Warfare to sells 15 million in 2016, or less.

As for Battlefield 1, i don't think it will have the same legs of Battlefild 3, but i can see it having a better launch, in others words, the biggest launch ofr a Battlefield game.

So i expect Battlefield 1 to ship more than 12 million of Battlefield 3 in 2011, and i think will even outsell Battlefront which shipped 13 million in 2015.
My prediction for BF1 is 14 million shipped in 2016. And well since those are shipments numbers, let's say 12-13 million sold or something...

So that's my guess:

Infinite Warfare - 15 million
Battlefield 1 - 12.5 million

I think that's close.

I wonder if the WW1 setting will hurt BF1 at all. Or the sci fi setting hurt CoD (which is undoubtedly more resilient).

This winter is very competitive for this genre and it's going to be really fun seeing the winners and losers at the end of December.

So if my maths are right (usually they are not) the Xbox One S launch allowed Microsoft to reduce the PS4 vs Xbox One installed base gap from 1,75 million to 1,61 million ?

PS4/XBO gap is 1.64 million

I like the COD futuristic gameplay, and i loved Black Ops III (by far my favourite COD). But Infinite Warfare just looks worse to me. I just saw the gameplay on youtube and i will have a play the beta for a better idea, though it doesn't look as fun and fast as Black Ops III. It hate all maps i saw so far, and the specialists sucks.

I usually prefer COD over Battlefield by a lot, this year i'm not sure. What i know anyway is that this year COD will sell less than what it usually sells, and Battlefield 1 is gonna surprise many of you.

I get the feeling that Sony will have another couple of rocky months, NPD-wise, but that things will settle again and improve thereafter.

2. The One S also has some functionalities that the new PS4 doesn't - There will be a cohort of people that wan't these functionalities.

By "some functionalities", do you mean UHD Blu-ray playback? What else is missing? Do you really think that single feature gives such a huge edge to a 1.4TF console that's significantly outclassed by the existing PS4 and tripled by the performance of the PS4P?

7. Sony have, against past form, backed the wrong horse in terms of tent-pole 1st person shooters this winter. Battlefield 1 is tracking much better than COD. Plus MS has EA Access, giving them a head start with FIFA. These are two massive partnership benefits that will influence the mainstream

Battlefield 1 won't outsell a new Call of Duty game with a remake of COD4. It won't even be close, look at the sales numbers from previous years.

I do think things will pick up, certainly in November/December and come 2017 I think Sony will accelerate again, but I can see MS doing really well in September/October. That could put them at 4 months running, NPD-wise.

That seems like an inaccurate prediction. September Sony has a new model, which will boost sales. October is PSVR, which will boost sales. November has already been won thanks to significant pre-orders of the PS4P.

We have sales numbers for the Xbox One S launch month, and they were good but not spectacular. Amazon US September currently shows the Xbox One S tracking behind the PS4P and the old PS4 blops III bundle, and I suspect the PS4S will pass it as well once it launches.

Yup, the gap of the PS4 Family towards Xbox will probably exceed 2mn units by the end of November. It will do extremely good in Q4, once the Slim gets some additional discounts / bundles.

Ryng I'm having a hard time understanding your math.

Blops3 sold far more than 1.85m at USA retail over the first 3 months.

I think I'm missing the point or I'm not reading your post right?

First 3 months of 2016, i mean January/February/March 2016, not first 3 months after release. :p In others words, first quarter of 2016.

I used Aquamarine numbers, they should be right.

Oh yes... numbers. Thanks Aqua!

Xbox One's sales are good enough, 300k+ was pretty optimistic.

Great result for No Man's Sky, more than 500k is very respectable.

I doubt that Infinite Warfare and Battlefield 1 sales will be close. CoD is still CoD.

I'm worried about Titanfall 2, seems that EA is sending the game to die in the market, especially in PS4 where the franchise is debuting.

I guess people has over expectation about Battlefield sales lol

C'mon were you guys are sawing these sales to reach 20 million???

Official shipment data doesn't stop to 15 million. In their Q2 report in 2012 EA also revealed that Battlefield 3 had shipped 17 million. So it shipped another 2 million between may and end of september in 2012. You really believe that it didn't ship another 3 million between october 2012 and late 2013? That is over a year and includes holiday season.

Yes... chart data shows that... look at the 2013 charts.

And there is no new shipment after 17 million... at 12 million they were 4 million behind in sold numbers.

And still retailers ordered more units (in millions) after 12 million and we have absolutely no idea how much the game sold on PC where digital is the king. Maybe that data is not as complete as you think.

What was the 3DS last August?

77,000

C'mon were you guys are sawing these sales to reach 20 million???

That's cool and all.

Too bad this doesn't change it shipped 15 million in May, and then 17 million in September, which mean in this period 2 million, TWO MILLION, copies were shipped.

Shipped in low months, is not like they can overship the game forever, they can overship the game at launch, not after months and months.

The charts you posted means nothing

First, Battlefield 3 for PS3 is at #11 in Europe for the first 9 months of 2012, and second, those are just retail sales, and Battlefield sells a lot on PC.

Do you want more data...

Jan to Jun 2012: BF3 + FIFA12 < 4 Million

BTW all these numbers (shipped) includes digital sales.

Sorry but nothing supports what you says.

Official data shows it didn't reach 20 million.

If you have any other official info please share with us... I will be happy to be wrong.

BTW Sep shipment is most due holidays expectations.

The average selling price of Xbox One was actually still lower than the PS4 average price in August, despite the launch of the Xbox One S 2 To at 399 dollars.

The ASP in August was 330$ for Xbox One and 348$ for PS4.

It also don't show it didn't.

We are both speculating.

Nothing support what i say? And what support what YOU said?

Cause those charts have no numbers. For example, what mean if Battlefield 3 is not in TOP 20 in USA for 2012?

According to Creamsugar, in 2014 there are 18 SKUs games which sold over 1 million, and withouth bundle, so there could be even more.
Considering 2011 was a bigger year, how you know the number 20 in the TOP TEN 2011 is not over 1 million? and if is even 1.1-1.2 million and BF3 for 360 is just below that?

And that's list is only separate SKUs. About Europe, we have Battlefield 3 on PS3 at #11 for the first 9 months, isn't that something?

And again, PC sales.

Though on the topic of BF3, even if it did sold 20 million doesn't that shows some decline in sales with BF4?

The only numbers from BF4 around are at 7 milion in 2014. Though BF1 has more positive word of mouth.

It should't surprise anyone.

It seems that Microsoft's major franchises are falling down. Fable is dead and was an IP with respectable sales, Halo had a huge drop and Gears maybe will follow the same path.

I don't know what's going on but is something to think about.

This is simple, really: do you think retailers would randomly take so many new shipments if there were still so much stuck on shelves?

You can't overship forever, and the same applies to consoles.

We can get revenue thanks to her.

XB1 = ~$90,885,000
PS4 = ~$55,723,000
WIU = ~$6,799,000

Wii U is actually getting more expensive while the XB1 and PS4 are getting cheaper :p

So, in hardware sales XBO was up MOM by 60%, but in revengue it was over double of last month. Interesting.

I think this should mean that a great part of XBO sold were the 2TB model

Either that or the fat model represented a small amount of sales since the $249 bundles would be the main sellers sans the new S models.

A bit of math.

Nintendo PR said that 3DS was up YOY by almost 80%, and it sold 189,000 unit in July 2016.
This mean 3DS has not sold under 106,000 units in July 2015.

Anyway, for some estimate (not official but still), 3DS was up by 18%, and 2DS 5 times bigger than last year.

2DS is 78k. This leave 111k for 3DS. So, if 111k is 118% of 2015, this should be 94k in 2015, and 1/5 of 78k is 15.6k.

I'll use 110k for 3DS in July 2015 then.

how are the chances gears will sell better than halo?

how are the chances gears will sell better than halo?

It has three weeks of tracking compared to Halo's one. Gears did ~2m while Halo did ~3.3m back in the 360's days in terms of debut month. It will have a worse week 1 but the extra 2 weeks could have Gears 4 "outperform" Halo 5.

Nonsense. You think the Wii U sold ~23K this month on the back of its multi-platform library? Software (exclusive or otherwise) makes you want the system. Price is a large point in whether you actually get it or not, though.
