ESPN's Amin Elhassan makes fun of WWE wrestler Kevin Owens's autistic, 8-year-old son

I don't think so, though. I think it's more feigned confusion because their outrage doesn't even make sense. A kind of "what are we talking about here?" "what does the kid being autistic have to do with realizing wrestling is scripted."

Most of them yeah, but "The kid or the wrestler?" definitely implies a negative view of autism

I do not think the tweet was making fun of the child.

I think we're often quick to misinterpret or are looking to be offended when no offense is meant.

For what it's worth it ain't his first rodeo either - Amin got into a feud with the Rivers family, don't feed the trolls!

Also this is now part 2393240394 of why you shouldn't go at peoples' children, especially not on social media. How is this such an elusive concept?

Nah, at that point he knows what's up and is definitely using autism in a derogatory manner. He probably considers it "playful ribbing", but he'll change his tune when the repercussions hit - and they will.

No wonder I feel terrible for being autistic when we are still being made the butt of every fucking joke on the internet.

It's not a real illness, quit being a part of outrage culture.
/s

Yeah he wasn't making fun of autism in the first tweets, but that third one isn't funny. At all.

At my job, that'd get you fired.

Dude is making it way worse on himself by doubling down. Would be much easier to just delete the tweet and say "my stupid joke about wrestling was being misinterpreted so I took it down, sorry if it upset anyone."

Again he was fine till the last tweet.

That's 100% not acceptable in any manor.

I would be shocked if he didn't do this eventually. Never a good idea to go after kids like this.

Even famous people often forget that social media is very real.

Sometimes they're more prone to it than regular people.

I'm trying to think if there is any way that he legit thought Kevin Owens could be an autistic wrestler, l guess it depends on the sequence of the tweets, but that'd be a reach.

It's almost impressive the way the DIDJYA KNOW WRESTLING IS FAKE thing has lasted this long, even after they basically stopped any pretense of the matches being actual athletic contests*.

At this point it's essentially the same as flagging someone down in the street and wholeheartedly informing them that the Walking Dead is not, in fact, a documentary.

*Except for Brawl for All**

**But we don't mention Brawl for All

I guess the last tweet was him doubling-down, he really could've done what you suggested and I would've bought that it was a joke gone bad.

I'm sure KO can defend himself :D

But if it this goes bad for Amin, too bad, I like it when he's on the Lebatard Show.

Honestly, while I dislike being the but of internet jokes, I sometimes get annoyed at some of the people who use outrage as a response and act like people with autism are all helpless and disfunctional. I'm aware many people with autism are low functioning, but there are plenty of us who can function at a high level. I was diagnosed with Asperger's as a kid, and right now I just started Grad School for bioengineering. It's alright to say "don't make fun of autism", but I do think some defenders are condescending in their defense

Maybe if people would keep their hands off wrasslin' they wouldn't get hurt

Outrage culture.

What am I supposed to be angry about here? What does his autism have to do with anything?

A) "Wrestling is fake" is a hot take, all hot takes should be condemned.
B) "Wrestling is fake" is an old man's hot take about wrestling. At least go into injuries or the shallowness of the product or something.
B-1) Or a 16 year old edge lord's hot take. Either one works, really.
B-2) Or an old man trying to appeal to the 16 year old edge lord demographic.
C) It's an 8 year old kid, congrats? You next want to tell them Santa isn't real or explain the nature of death? Why is he gotta a dick about it?
D) It's an 8 year old kid celebrating his dad. Seems like a moment of pure joy this guy is trying to poop on for a really dumb hot take.
E) He kept tweeting after his hot take and it became insulting.

Wow. The original tweet I took it as a jab to wrestling, but his follow up tweets were way over the line. All he had to do was explain he was not making fun of the child but the sport and then move on.

I would not be surprised if he gets reprimanded for this or even fired. ESPN is hard to read what their reaction will be when these types of things happen.

The funny thing is that given that ESPN and WWE have a working relationship, he's going to feel like a chump when a higher up tells him to shut up.

First tweet is fine, last one is uncalled for though. With that said, is it necessary to get angry at the first tweet? It's joke about wrestling.

Never keep digging.

I dont get why "wrestling is fake/scripted" is used as an insult. Like yeah...so are most shows that you enjoy. The physicality of wrestling is very real though.

I hope KO meets this guy in a dark alley. Wrestling may be "scripted" but KO is a legit bad-ass and would fuck this guy up.

Amin is a jerk in many of his public interactions. Hardly worthy of outrage, but I don't find him insightful or interesting enough to supersede his lameness as an ESPN personality.

It feels like he was making fun of wrestling. With or without autism the joke is pretty much the same.

He's making fun of wrestling.

By making it sound like being autistic is something worth of mockery.

"haha, im calling wrestling autistic, because that's something negative!"

All done while on the topic of an actual autistic 8 year old, do you not see how that is a dick move?

at the expense of an 8 year old's happiness

Did he go out of his way to tell the kid it was all scripted and robbed him of his happiness? If he did that, then yeah, that'd be shitty. I don't think anyone in their right mind would laugh at the kid for that joke, but at wrestling.
As I said before, the other tweet was compeltely unnecessary,

Well that's the old stigma. People outside of wrestling fandom think wrestling fans are either too stupid or ignorant to realize that it's scripted.

I just don't see how this is offensive. Wrestling is scripted, and it is funny how kids believe it isn't.

Aside from asking whose autistic, the father or son, which was uncalled for given the kid is autistic. I just don't see the big deal.

This is definitely true once we get to that last comment, but it's worth noting that he wasn't the one that brought autism into the equation in the first place

Some people still think pro wrestling being a work is some kind of insider thing. We have known for fucking YEARS! They just assume everyone that watches doesn't get it and is an idiot.

If we are talking about bad taste then I got nothing. This is not high brow entertainment. And I'm ok with that.

edit: I'm also ok with Kids figuring it out themselves unless they ask.

Some wrestlers don't tell their kids it's scripted. When Dusty Rhodes joined the NWO, Cody thought it was legit and was pissed. When Dusty was injured, he'd walk around the house in crutches or something. I forgot the story, but some wrestlers don't tell their kids it's scripted to help them make it feel more real.

I doubt KO does though because he plays shit heels.
