Best PS2 RPG?

My PS2 playtime has been close to zero for quite some time now, and with his being a slow month I wanted to hit a RPG to pass the time (then probably drop it like a rock once Ninny G gets his upgrade).

Old or new - what is the best RPG on PS2?

Dark Cloud 2 or Disgaea: Hour of Darkness for me. It was very hard to even put those two ahead of the other PS2 rpgs I love, like Kingdom Hearts and Suikoden III.

Suikoden III
Disgaea
Dark Cloud 2
FFX

Disregard all people suggesting Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter

that is all

Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter by far.

A distant second is claimed by Disgaea: Hour of Darkness

Gattsu25 wouldn't know a good game if it came up and slapped him in the face.

Suikoguy

I whinny my fervor lowly, for his length is not as great as those of the Hylian war stallions
I did love FFX
some other favorites i've enjoyed this gen:

Shadow Hearts
Wild Arms 3
Suikoden 3
Xenosaga

This fall looks to change my list dramatically

So says the everpopular arm-cannoned hero?

The thread is about 'best' RPGs, not RPGs that you need to fall inside a very small niche to enjoy

edit: Ahh...Shadow Hearts is another good RPG...though that might be considered a niche title

It's sequel is coming out this Fall, no?

Says the man suggesting a hardcore SRPG and an unfocused dungeon hack. :p

Thanks - looks like Dark Cloud 2 may get the nod -

Played Xenosaga thru, liked it - certainly doesn't deserve half the shit it gets here on GAF

I actually have Disgaia - kinda started it and got distracted - may be a little too long.

Maybe it's time I gave into the whole FF thing - never played one!

How about Jade Cocoon or Otoki (that game with the shadow guy)?

Is Front Mission 4 any good?

compared to a hardcore dungeon hack that is focused to the point of likely alienation?

I see your point

Edit: Front Mission 4 is a very good game, just not as good as 3 IMO

Edit2: If a dungeon hack is your thing, then by all means get Grandia Xtreme (sp ;_; ) or Nethack

not saying you won't like BoF:DQ, just that it's highly likely that you wont enjoy it...I definately suggest renting it or buying it used (should be under $14)

Yes. If by "Best PS2 RPG" you include SRPGs, then FM4 gets my pick as the best. I'm still playing BOF DQ and FFX-2, but despite the amazing breadth of RPGs on the system, only FM4 and FFX have stuck with me as games I want to keep.

Final Fantasy X for me.

The ending made the game for me. Greatest video game ending ever!

I thought the ending in Kingdom Hearts was much better. The characters just rocked in KH and the voice acting was perfect. I haven't played all the PS2 rpgs yet, but if I had to choose from what I have played I suggest Kingdom Hearts. Best rpg on any system is Fire Emblem hands down.

Wild Arms 3 rocks. I enjoy the intricate design presented in the game that so very few RPGs present (and none of the current generation of PS2, GC, or Xbox RPGs really do what WA3 does from a design standpoint).

If you dont mind some long load times and a game taking up 1800 Kb on your memory card then I suggest Drakken: THe Ancient Gates. Fantastic awesome action RPG you can pick up for like 10 bucks. It plays like a Zelda type action game with XP and lvling up. Huge worlds to explore, great voice acting and story and cool dragon riding. If you get it, make sure you keep a few different save files and on different memory cards if possible since it isnt uncommon to get corrupt save files on some occassion. Probably the only flaw of the game, although dont let it keep you from playing this awesome game.

no!

This game is ONLY recommended for big time fans of boring movies, bland RPGs, and/or Xenogears
Hey! I love Xenogears to death, but Xenosaga blows.

I'm going with Disgaea. After that I would have to pick Dark Cloud 2, and then maybe FFX (which I seriously have a love/hate relationship with).

I really should play Breath of Fire someday. I've tried to start it, but never at any time that I felt like playing an RPG.

FFX
FFX-2
Kingdom Hearts

Yep, I'm a Square whore! I also have Unlimited Saga but that game sucks.. I only got it for the nice PAL package :B

I have a kind of love/hate relationship with Dark Cloud 2, but I have played it for 80 hours (and still playing) so I quess it must be pretty good.

Final Fantasy X was also good, although I liked parts 6 to 9 better.

It looks like Disgaea is counting, so I must say Disgaea!

But in the way of non-strategy PS2 rpgs... I'm not sure. FFX, .hack, or Dragon Quarter.

I would have to agree with that, Kingdom Hearts had a much better ending. Actually it is my favorite ending this generation.

SRPGs DO count - so yes, Disgaea and FM4 are in.

Like I said, I have Disgaea - maybe I'll go back to it (never really gave it a chance)

But I'm leaning towards FM4 because, well, robots kick ass. I played the demo and really liked it - except you have so few troops to control - do the battles get any more "epic"?

PS2 has a good few cool original RPGs, but as far as good ones in the FF clone type of RPG its been lacking, while i enjoyed FFX more then the previous two it was still pretty lacking in alot of areas and didnt feel like the previous lot, both WA3 and Suikoden were iffy, and sounds like Star Ocean is aswell. Doesnt sound like that'll change till maybe the Atlus RPGs or Shadow Hearts.

Dark Cloud 2, Disgaea, Dragon Quarter are all very good, but i think aren't as broadly appealing as the PSX rpgs like FF, Chrono Cross, Lunar, Suikoden, etc.

Final Fantasy X. The story, characters, music, battles, experience, art, everything about this game I loved. The last great SquareSoft game.

And fuck you very much for FFX-2 kthnxbye.

Really though, what if the most popular/best selling RPGs aren't really the ones that are good? (Usually the case... most of the time, they're quite average or worse.) Just because Grandia also only appealed to the niche (heck, it was only played by a handful) doesn't mean it's any less than best-game-of-all-time to me. I'll still recommend it(SS ver) any day of the week.

Anyway, niche or not... I thought the original poster wanted people's opinion of what their favorite PS2 RPGs were, in order to get an idea of what to get next?

IMO:

Dragon Quarter is the best RPG on PS2, Dark Cloud 2 runner up.

Grandia X is also quite nifty.

Suikoden bores me nowadays. Well, III at least. I still have some random, dorky fixation for Suiko 1 & 2. And I still love III's visuals and audio, and a lot of what it attempted, but it's easier for me to see all the problems with it lately...

I adore FFXI, and could talk it up forever, but Square's other offerings are just shit, IMO. Barring FM4, which I haven't played.

Xenosaga still sucks.

Wild Arms 3 still sucks. 3 hours of content streched into 30, dumb battle engine, dumb dungeons, and it still isn't western themed barring the most lesser of details and the intro, ARGH. I swear the only reason the even bother with that is so they can solely use a brown/grey color scheme for enviroments.

.Hack still sucks.

I wanted to like Disgaea, and while I like what it stands for. It still feels so overly broken to me. And the purposeful disbalance and over the top...ness of it puts me off.

FFX-2 gets a nod for returning the job system, but gets a punch in the gut for breaking the fuck out of it, and being so exploitable, it makes children cry. Oh, and for having the worst mythos in a game, period.

Shadow Hearts is good? Really? I've never tried it.

Still wondering if I should get SO3. I should probably listen to Shouta, as he's a good guy I've known awhile with good taste, but certain crazyness (Wild Arms, cough, Wild Arms) says other wise.
