Overwatch - Review Thread

In defense of those people, not everyone finds it fun to play as multiple characters. I played almost exclusively as Soldier 76 during the beta, and I don't see that changing when I eventually get the full game. If I had to play a support or tank character just to fill a role, I'd probably hate this game.

I mean, that's how the game works, though. It's about counterpicking and balanced team make up. Have you tried to get to know all the characters? I found it's one of those games that will surprise you with how much you end up liking characters you don't think you'd like.

It has a singleplayer campaign though.

I honestly wonder who actually played the single player. I definitely totally skipped it. it was billed as a multiplayer game.

It is the prime example of pure gameplay goodness with goodwill free update triumphs over initial backlash, Overwatch will be the same.
Overwatch doesn't need to triumph over anything. The hype for this game is unreal, I'm seeing people talking about it everywhere. The people upset over the amount of content seem awfully minuscule in comparison.

GOT EEM!

The single player campaign in Splatoon was a ncie surprise. It's not why people kept going back to the game or really bought it in the first place, but yes, shocker, some shooters do ahve campaigns and those are sometimes enjoyable and liked. Flipside, you had almost no multiplayer maps at launch. Somehow the game still did fine.

Splatoon's single player campaign is actually fantastic. Didn't expect it at all, but it's very well paced, and features the greatest final boss this gen.

One person! :p jk

But seriously, I would've been 100% okay if they'd cut the single player from Splatoon and instead multi had more maps. I was buying a multiplayer shooter after all.

I played about 7 levels and gave up on it. I found it pretty boring compared to the "meat" of the game. But to each their own!

Which is fine and all, but I think they made the right choice with Overwatch, just like I wish they hadn't bothered with multiplayer in Doom.

Yup. Game is damn near flawless.

Yeah, for what it's trying to be it's close to perfect. So well balanced, incredibly well optimised on all platforms, good netcode, and so on. The only real flaws one could level at it are the comparatively thin content, but that depends whether they're going to give Blizzard the benefit of the doubt, considering there's no Season Pass and all updates will be free. I can definitely see this having a high metascore.

I still think "thin content" is a logical fallacy when it comes to multiplayer, because it supposes that people treat multiplayer like single player (in that original content has a finite number of playthroughs for the average player).

Multiplayer is just inherently far more replayable than single player, and can survive on less content for a longer period of time (especailly when the focus of the moment-to-moment gameplay is more about character vs. character than the maps and modes, like a fighting game or a MOBA).

Now, where the longevity of the game goes in a few months will depend on how quickly Blizzard releases new modes and content. I have a feeling the weekly brawl will keep things lively until legit new modes are introduced.

I'll be honest, I get the feeling that many of these perfect or near-perfect review scores were bought. Not that the game is bad, of course.

Do you really think so little of journalists and the game?Honestly not since the occasional university LAN party have I played and enjoyed a competitive shooter. Yet I gave this beta a shot and to my surprise, was enjoying it more than almost any game I've played in recent memory.

Your cynicism is offensive. The game deserves the praise, even if you don't see it.

76 is a solid pick every time, but if you insist on maining anybody else, play another game. It really hurts your team if you wont switch.

Someone who wants to play suboptimally will just get matched lower, assuming that matchmaking is a thing. That doesn't have to stop them from enjoying the game, though.

Although it does dramatically reduce the game's breadth.

Pretty much everybody who's really into the multiplayer plays through the single player at some point. You can't get the Dynamo Rollers, generally considered one of the best weapon types, without beating the final boss. You also need to beat like the fourth boss to get the Kelp chargers, which are also extremely good.

Played the closed beta and the open beta, and the game didnt really grab me.

Still due to the massive praise on here, I decided to buy it for me and a friend. Played it last night and it finally clicked.

I am not addicted, to the point where I am sitting at work and cant stop thinking about Overwatch.

Funny that no one shittalks about Splatoon's lack of content at launch now, it was a $60 title too. Why? Because it is exactly what Overwatch is doing right now: all content updates are free. And if I remember correct, Splatoon's multiplayer content is even less at launch, with 5 maps and 2 modes.
It was 40 in Europe and Japan, it had a sp mode and still EVERYONE was shitting on it. Reviews absolutely destroyed the game for its lack of content at launch despite knowing about the free updates plan, but they aren't doing that with Overwatch. So yeah, bad example.

The game is fun no doubt about that, but reviews should have punished the game for selling a 30-40$ content for 60$ on console.

Again, Splatoon launched with less than half of OW's number of maps, and significantly less weapon/ability variety. Splatoon WITH all the DLC maps has the same number as OW is launching with, for comparison.

It might shock you that most people find a game they're going to play for hundreds of hours to be worth 60 dollars.

Multiplayer game the average player will probably spend hundreds of hours playing, only worth $40. Single player game the average player will spend ten to forty hours on, no problem $60. Come on buddy, the game having 12 maps or 20 maps doesn't change that the game is fun and doesn't get boring.

My point is that Splatoon didn't get any free pass, it was harshly criticized both by reviews and gamers, much more so than Overwatch (which wouldn't deserve that treatment either, it's a fantastic game). Fortunately the gameplay was beyond amazing, the art, concept and setting were super-charming and Nintendo decided to push it, so it still was a huge success.

Game is crazy fun and considering Blizzard's policy of supporting and updating games, 60$ is imo, very reasonable.

They're still supporting Diablo 2 and that came out 16 years ago

I did say "now". No one pulled out Splatoon as a bad example of thin MP launch content in this thread because we all see how a good sustain update roadmap benefit that. Splatoon turned out to be very successful, how Overwatch can't? In terms of consistently supporting the game with rich content, Blizzard is second to none in this industry.

Why do you think so? Like do you think that in general about near perfect scores, or is it just in overwatch's case?

Depends on the game. I think it was well deserved in Ocarina of Time's case, in this case the super positive reviews aren't all that critical. I'm not saying the game doesn't deserve the praise it's getting, I just get this uneasy feeling from some of the reviews, especially from the larger outlets.Gives me IGN GTA IV vibes, and I liked GTA IV. Reviews from small-time sites/users or people we know have no connection to gaming media or publishers might paint a better overall picture.

Fox News: 8/10

Verdict: Overwatch is a beautifully created world with great back stories and depth to its characters. Losing or winning, you will have a great time indulging in all the fun and new aspects about the game that makes it unique from other first-person shooters. So find a hero you love and prepare to get sucked into countless hours of battle.

Forbes - No score

Overall

Overwatch is an amazing game. It is beautiful to look at, plays well and has oodles of charm. What Blizzard has made here is a great base game and with the company promising that future levels and characters will be free of charge it seems that this is one game with plenty of staying power. If you are looking for a great game to sink your time into, look no further than Overwatch.

Lol @ Splatoon having a good single player campaign. Stop it. I played it for like 15 minutes before never returning.

I keep hearing wonderful things about Overwatch. Several of the Best Buy associates tried to sell me on it today but I told them I wanted to wait a little bit before jumped in. This was completely off my radar...didn't even bother trying the beta. But these reviews and GAF's reception is making it difficult. I'd love something to sink my teeth in for a few minutes here and there and nothing's been doing it for me lately. Had this been $40 on PS4 I wouldn't haven't even thought twice.

Why would a perfect score give criticism? Doesn't that defeat the point of a perfect score?

Why is this game geting free pass?
Full price multiplayer only game with balance problems.
Titanfall, sfv, sw battlefront was massacred...

If there's one thing I think should be criticized about Overwatch, it's the microtransactions while the game is not free-to play
