After the backlash surrounding Johansson’s role in the film, producers reportedly attempted to quell the controversy with an old standby Hollywood uses to fix a lot of problems: CGI.

According to multiple independent sources close to the project, Paramount and DreamWorks commissioned visual effects tests that would’ve altered Scarlett Johansson in post-production to “shift her ethnicity” and make the Caucasian actress appear more Asian in the film.

[...]

We reached out to Paramount Pictures who acknowledged the tests, but refute the claim that Johansson was involved:

A test was done related to a specific scene for a background actor which was ultimately discarded. Absolutely no visual effects tests were conducted on Scarlett’s character and we have no future plans to do so.

Our sources maintain Johansson’s character was specifically the focus of these tests, though they were done without her participation or knowledge.

JUST HIRE ASIANS

But there aren't enough Asian stars! Because we never hire asians! Because there aren't enough Asian stars! Because we never hire asians! Because there aren't enough Asian stars! Because we never hire asians! Because there aren't enough Asian stars! Because we never hire asians...

It's both depressing and hilarious to see how far Hollywood studios will go to think they're doing the right thing instead of actually hiring Asian actors.

Because there aren't enough Asian stars.

Blackface is reviled, yet somehow this kind of stuff is allowed?

Did you watch the movie?

Like, they used the same actors for every scenario presented so when it was set in Asia they made everyone asian. They didn't replace asian actors with white actors and they didn't make fun of asian people using stereotypes.

What Cloud Atlas did isn't even close to blackface even if it might appear so with a still image out of context.

It's the same people in multiple different instances of existence. In one instance he happened to be more Asian. You wouldn't know it was the same guy if they just got a different actor.

It makes sense in the film.

Yeah, Robert Downy Jr got away with blackface not that long ago. If it isn't coming from a place of ignorance and hate, and if it has a logical place in the story being presented, people are usually okay with it.

People using Cloud Atlas as an example are pretty much missing the point of the movie

Plus that film was filled with actresses and actors of different ethnicities

This film is actively taking roles away from Asian people
