Okay in the beginning, gets very outclassed a lot mid game. By mid game I mean chapter 8/9 Conquest. He is support bait.

Yes and no. He's got a personal skill that makes him really risky to use in battle (he's unlucky so he gets crit all the time).

He's one of the best support bots in the game along with the other berserker, where they're just stat sticks for the other character.

Crap. The only characters I think I'll like are him, Xander, Silas, and Corrin.

So I pre-ordered Conquest a while back but decided I want to start with Birthright. Can I just immediately download the DLC for Birthright on my Conquest cartridge and play that first?

Yes that should work just fine. If you plan to play both it doesn't really matter which cart you get.

People have been making a bigger deal of the final bullet point than there should be, reading more into it than there actually is. All actors are kept in the dark for character-based VO prior to actually getting into the studio. For auditions, the actor's given a side (character name, description, 2–4 sample lines, and maybe a character image). If selected, the actor gets something like 20 minutes of prep time upon arriving at the studio, and then dives straight into the session.

The only people with a greater context and understanding of the story are the writers, if they're on staff for things like rewrites and the actual voice director, meaning that the overall strength of the production is usually contingent upon them. Since the actors usually record in isolation, the direction is essential for making sure things turn out well and that, even if the lines are well-acted, they actually fit together with everything else emotion-wise.

That goes for all games, pretty much, even the big-budget ones. This itself isn't some failing on Treehouse's part. Provided all things gel together, you shouldn't be able to tell that the actors might not even know who half the other characters exist. That's why cold reading as a skill is emphasized in VO much more than in other professional acting fields, because the everything's so fast-paced.

There's a lot to criticize the overall VO about; the process itself isn't, because it's completely status-quo. Take issue with it if you want, but chances are that even games you thought had good VO were recorded under similar circumstances. The problems here either fall to an actor not performing well, the director not supplying adequate direction, or Treehouse approving the lines as a client. The only thing suspect about the process is not specifying that Azura's character required singing in her sides.

Though it doesn't help that there's someone in that link's comments trying to extrapolate pay-to-play VO sites to the field as a whole, which is just compounding the misinformation.

For some reason the new trend is to attack Treehouse and claim their localizations are terrible (I believe thanks to a meme in Triforce Heroes). Hence, some people will cling to anything that can help this new narrative.

It's a shame really, many threads have been ruined by this, especially related to FE Fates.

Do you have a character ranking list? I'm wondering who is worthwhile to use or not in Conquest because of the exp limitation.
Shephen on the FE subreddit posted character analysis by route for Birthright and Conquest on Lunatic. Birthright was yesterday so you might have to dig a bit but Conquest is on the front page of the sub right now.

If someone started a file in the Special Edition (cartridge with all 3 games on it) and then felt like having the game digital (at which point they'd have to choose for either Birthright or Conquest), would their progress from the Special Edition carry over to the digital versions? Or not, because the digital versions are segmented whereas the Special Edition isn't?

Only the 6 SD save slots carry over. The first 3 are game-tied. Assuming you own the other 3 digital.

Hearing about all the platonic S-supports has got me bummed out. The fun of all the S-Ranks in Awakening was seeing unlikely loves blossom. If they were gonna decide that some S-Ranks would be rejections, I'd rather them have just removed those all together, and capped at A.

It's especially lame for couples that occurred in the Japanese versions but have been removed basically.

I'm still torn about the difficulty, bought birthright but don't know if i should try hard or normal

Try hard, then move down to normal if you're not feeling like it's fun. That's my advice, at least.

Also, support bot sounds funny. I always called them stats wagons.

OK one question, as I'm still confused on all this:

I know it isn't the most efficient method of playing both games, but what if you have both RETAIL versions of the new FE titles? It still works the same way right?

The op says I simply shouldnt get both retail versions, but what if I do? Am I screwed?

Cross-posting this.

So if one were to try to play Birthright/Conquest chapter by chapter on the SE, would they lose out on the carry-over bonuses like the special classes? Or is it a system data thing? I read the FAQ in the OP, it's just I wasn't sure if one could do that, or if actually finishing campaigns is a requirement.

I'm awful at this game, I chose hard and got wiped out on one of the early chapters, but I think it'll be more fun to learn the systems than just lower to normal.

How do you use the defence stance? I know I can stand next to each other to get a bonus. I can pair up which I think is attack stance but not sure on the defence side.

Attack Stance is standing next together as not in the same tile.
Guard Stance is when units are in the same tile after pair up.

Guard Stance is only through paired units

Has anyone who ordered the Special Edition from Best Buy had it shipped yet? I thought this was supposed to be release-day delivery...
My SE hasn't shipped either :/

It said release day shipping when I preordered it but clearly that wasn't the case. This happened to me with Dragon Ball Xenoverse as well. I ordered release day shipping and ended up getting the game over a week after the release date. At this point I'm just keeping my fingers crossed that it will ship before the week is over and I'll have it by the middle of next week.

I'm glad the OT is up so I can read everyone's impressions in the meantime. I know the basic structure of both games but I avoided as much information as I could about all the characters/classes and whatnot.

If you have the SE edition, I believe the answer is the bonuses are already unlocked. So no, you don't lose anything playing chapter by chapter.

That's just my understanding though.

Yeah. Not really sure why they did that when everyone can still be romanced by the avatar.

Thought you gotta admit, that support cap off for Hisame and Kana was really great. I missed platonic supports and am glad to have them back even if its just for localization. Even if my favorite support in the game is still Corrin/Xander because it's still too freaking good.

Expensive, miss out on clear bonuses. Do not get 2 retail copies other than for collection purposes.

There is literally no benefit to buying both physical unless you seriously just want the other to collect.

The Rhajat change makes me really disappointed despite my lack of interest in it.

Have less reason to bother with it now.

Whoa what? I didn't know of this... Who can reject who?

I'm fine with just friendships, but it feels kinda shitty to have them under an S. Back when A was the cap, it was different. The whole point of S is the romance. Especially since I'm pretty sure that you can't have multiple S's for the characters who get friendzoned.

Maybe I just empathize too much. Pairing Cordelia off to someone in Awakening was really hard for me, felt bad to stick a guy with her when she'd always love Chrom

Even if it's just second gen supports in localization, good.

The series could stand to have more platonic relationships in general without gimping the gameplay effectiveness of said supports.

I swore to myself I wouldn't buy this because of the special edition lack of supply BS but I caved in. There's just too little good JRPGs these days...

9 minutes til I can start it up. All I want is a good story pls.

Yeah, this is honestly a change for the better. I can see the argument for making S-ranks strictly romantic because of the 1-per-unit limit, but Awakening and Fates were badly lacking in opposite-gender friendships.

Soleil rejects everyone but Corrin and Forrest, and both male and female Kanna get rejected a bunch (though especially male Kanna)

What's the Rhajat change? I missed that

Wait, what's this about?

They changed pairs in the localization so there's no romance? I'm assuming that means those pairs can no longer result in a child unit then because it wouldn't make sense otherwise.

What's the point of this?

Quick question on something story related for all 3 routes (vague spoilers)

Is there only one preventable story-related death or are there others?

from the sound of it it seems its supports among the kids more than anything

Is this the place to exchange friend codes? I guess we can visit each others Mycastle's and can get free items/skills?

Shit ain't free. Pay out your ass in gold.

Only free stuff are things to upgrade your My Castle buildings.

If you want to start a google doc for 3DS friend codes and caste codes go on ahead and I'll add it to the OP.

The supports that were changed like that were from pairs that didn't make kids.

oh yeah

...why didn't we start a google doc in the community thread way earlier? lol

In Awakening, most of the romance would occur in the S-rank. I got everyone to A supports with each other besides my desired S ranks, and so they were all friends with each other in those supports. It just shouldn't be an S if it's platonic, it defeats the purpose IMO. Especially since a lot seem to be changed from the Japanese verison
