iOS Gaming January 2016 | Should old applications be forgot?

Probably should be talking about this in the GoTY thread itself, but how about waiting until the voting is over. Then giving everyone one vote for anything that is still tied? And set like a 48 hour max to get that vote in? Then, hopefully, the will be broken.

I think I remember doing something like that when I did the Indie iOS GoTY on TA a few years ago.

Kind of an off topic question, but what kind of case do people use with their iPad whilst gaming? Just curious -- I'm getting the "new case itch," so to speak.

I have a nice pseudo-leather case for my iPad Mini 2 that I got dirt cheap with a Bluetooth keyboard when my local Radio Shack was closing. But depending on the game, I tend to take it out when actually playing because it's a little cumbersome. I use it more for on the go and if I'm just browsing or reading. Funny enough, after the initial "this is cool", I also ditched the keyboard.

Also wanted to mention that if anyone is wanting iTunes e-cards, Raise.com has an extra 5% off this weekend. So a $15 card is like $13.11. Not a great deal, but every little bit helps. Promo code is TAKE5.

I have an Otterbox Symmetry Series Folio

The new votes just shifted the 5-way tie to 9th place :p

Btw, I'm adding the points individually for each nominated game, so the results thread might be a bit slower to go up than the other GOTY threads

Venture Kid is a pure joy. The controls are perfect on my 6s+, and it's just the right amount of difficulty for me. It's a lovely tribute to Mega Man, but in that it doesn't have much originality. It's fairly straight forward and not anything flashy, but it's the best Mega Man-like we've received on iOS yet.

Batteries the CRISIS!
In an ironic twist, the images in the OP are so big that they crash the Safari tab on my iPad over and over until I escape the page before it gets too far into loading. "IOS gaming thread, not safe for iOS devices"

I'm personally finding that game disappointingly dull to be honest. It does control well, I will give it credit for that. But the level design is very pedestrian and the bosses encounters are very boring due largely in part of the mountain of health they have but with very limited movesets.

Yep, Been like that for awhile with us OG Mini users. Means it's time to upgrade. ;)

You'll be playing Love You To Bits next month though :p
Supposed to release in February

Well that's something at least! Wonder if they'll go back and update Tiny Thief after that launches.

Guess I should make the game banners smaller in the future threads

Was sleeping on Power Hover, it's great.
Would look great on Apple TV, too!

Thanks! As it happens, we just started working on the apple TV version :)

BTW. Here's a short clip from the upcoming content update:

6 new levels + boss, should be out next month if everything goes smoothly :)

Yeah, the OP is such a slug loaing on iOS devices. My iPhone 6 crashes the browser more than once.

I also haven't voted. Dunno what to vote for. Didn't play that much of that many games last year.

You can already tell this will be a good year for mobile when only 2 weeks in I already have a game that will probably be on my GOTY list. (Momoka ;))

Dammit!! I should crucify myself for not always using a case. My iPad Mini 2 got in between the side of a recliner and I didn't even know. Then I saw it sticking out and sure enough here's now a huge crack on the screen on the top half.

Urghhh.

So, I'm still stuck with a 4S and I've been missing the chance to upgrade it for years and I was wondering if I should get an iPhone or an iPad? I rarely use it as a phone and I occasionally use it for calling and texting but only when I need to. I mostly use it for checking mail, browsing and playing games that it doesn't even feel like a phone anymore. Although, if I get an iPad, it would feel so redundant with the devices that I have since I use both a Chromebook and a laptop at home and at work and I switch between them from time to time. Also, if I invest on a device, I want it to last for at around 4-5 years if possible, so I'm kinda torn between and iPhone 6S Plus and an iPad Mini 4. What do you guys suggest, get a new device now or just wait for the new ones that will eventually be released later this year?

Apple updated practically every device with A8's last year (minus the A9's in the 6s) so anything with that processor is probably going to be supported for at last a few generations, but no one can guarantee 4-5 years. The iPad Mini 4 isn't a bad choice. If you want something smaller, take a look at the iPod touch too.

The iPad Air might get an upgrade by summertime and Apple could potentially upgrade the mini alongside it, but...well. Rumor has it that Apple will be releasing a 4-inch iPhone with an A8 processor sometime soon too.

I think possibly it's the large number of embedded YouTube videos that crashes safari, it does fine on the iOS threads with lots of images (why iOS rocks 2015), but since mobile Gaf automatically embeds YouTube links the monthly threads are full of YouTube videos.

never played much Steven Universe on iOS, but I gave it a go now it's on Apple TV.
Really fun game. bonus points for not showing Siri remote directions when using a MFi controller.

Aha, so that's what it is. I always disable embedding and GIFs on mobile.

Started Implosion and am not feeling it so far. I only played two levels but if those are representative of the game, I am not sure I will enjoy it. I expected a console like experience from all the hype and then the levels are just short linear hack and slash events.
The story is quite uninteresting and generic so far and actually hinders the pacing.

I am just at the beginning so maybe the pace will pick up but if not, it won't be so bad as I got the game for free from IGN anyway.

Hope Kotor gets discounted soon again and Bioshock reappears on the store.

Just a thought - if people are forced to go out of their way to disable embeds and jump through hoops to get past the first page, maybe such an image/video-intensive layout isn't needed? Personally I just scroll straight past everything at the start of each new thread. Just seems to be a common thread that pops up every month. Not disparaging the effort you put in, but something to think about perhaps. Cheers!

Seems like the issue is the YouTube embeds. I won't add the trailer links in the February thread: we'll see how that turns out. Sounds like that was the main issue

I had the same impressions about Implosion and eventually gave up around the sixth or seventh level. I'd be interested to know if you carry on whether you find any improvements.

That's basically a console AAA experience these days.

So glad I got Momoka. Perfect game to tide me over until Crashlands hits next week.

Is the GameCenter bug back? Really? Common I need that to play games... Apple, wake up there are a lot of gamers out there who rely on GameCenter... better fix it. Steve Jobs wouldnt let that happen...

Same here. Crashlands is going to be so sweet.

Also, Power Hover is getting another sale when I arrive home (out of battery and at work) since it seems to be universally loved. Hope they add an endless mode sometime (fingers crossed, touching wood, lighting a candle, etc...)

It's not that it's "back", the bug has been here for more than a year now and it can go away if you're lucky or be present until you do a full restore. But even then, it can come back at any time and there are no permanent solution to fix it (and it's still not fixed in iOS 9.2.1 or 9.3).

It's really annoying.

Annoying as hell for sure. I thought I got rid of it a while ago, and a few days ago I wanted to check something on the app and... a big white blank screen... guess another full restore is in order...

iOS Gamers, lets do a round of sarcastic applause for the team responsible for GameCenter. Probably the worst internal studio at Apple. Been like that for months and nothing to fix it...
