Game Informer's February cover is Doom

Fuck yes, can't wait to play this.

I have a feeling this will be even better than Wolfenstein.

The fast MP looks fucking great too.

I think you're looking at this the wrong way.

Doom isn't an excuse to make more Doom. It's an excuse to make a modern shooter that isn't slavish to what the most popular FPS of today are(i.e. Destiny, COD, etc.)

New Doom probably won't have exhaustive, labyrinthine keycard hunts. It's not going to have similar firefight compositions or weapon handling or level design. But I don't know under what context a large budget version of a game with little emphasis on ADS, health pickups, a map editing suite and arena based multiplayer gets made if there isn't a preexisting property devs are able to use.

To be clear, I think Doom is going to be dissimilar to 1 and 2, since those are decades old games and 3, which is a weird game in that series under any context. But the same way I think The New Order was an excuse to make solid, but unique shooter that has little to do mechanically with RtCW and 3D, I think you can look at this Doom, where the name is their excuse to try to make a game that doesn't have to chase the mold the Activision currently has a monopoly on.

And you know, I'm ok with that. Those old games aren't going anywhere and if using an old name is what's needed to assuage the fears of publishers to put a lot of money into something a little different in a genre that's been somewhat homogenized, then do what you gotta do.
 
Some new info from the article:


  • BFG and Chainsaw aren't on the weapon wheel since they're used in specific scenarios, Chainsaw is on D-Pad down and BFG is on X. Seems like they're treating the BFG as a panic button.
  • Weapons have mods you can find, ex. a remote detonation mod for the rocket launcher
  • Plot premise seems similar to Doom 3. A character named Dr. Olivia Pierce appears on a video suggesting she unleashed the demons as some kind of religious cult thing.
  • On-screen enemy count isn't numbered but described as "a demon avalanche", "bloodbath"
  • Chainsaw is a one hit kill on most enemies, multiple on bigger enemies like the Mancubus, power cells are limited
  • Colored keycards and backtracking for secrets. WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • Some locations: Lazarus Facility, Martian surface, Titan's Realm (as seen on the cover)
  • Permanent character upgrades that allow you to swap weapons and mantle more quickly, increase ammo and health capacity
  • Swappable perk "runes", ex. one gives you a stackable temp speed boost after melee kills
  • Hell is more vertical than the UAC facility
  • Enemies have weak point, ex. the pinky demon is armored in front and soft in the butt
  • An enemy type only described as "a summoner"
  • As suspected, idTech 6 appears to be very similar to idTech 5 but with a completely new PBR renderer
  • Plans to offer "sliders and multi-sampling options" for PC players. Only time in the article PC is mentioned specifically.
  • Multiplayer mode called Warpath, an domination style mode where the control area drifts around the map
  • Clan Arena mode, this is just team Last Man Standing.
  • Swappable "hack modules" are earned through MP progression, ex. Supply Timer that shows spawn timers for pickups on screen. Apparently none of them throw off the competitive balance.
  • Apparently multiplayer has more guns than single player, including a "lightning gun", this might be GI assuming based on what was offered in the demo portions though.
  • Namedrops of old Doom WADs followed by statement implying that they won't be releasing mod tools outside of SnapMap because of accessibility

  • Examples of modes made in SnapMap: tower defense, moddy single-player missions, VIP escorts, racing challenges
  • Moddable enemy AI to some extent
  • SnapMap stuff is all shared on SmartHub, categories like top rated and most played, user profiles, seems a lot like Mario Maker
  • All SnapMap creations are small instruction files, you can probably forget about custom textures and rooms and whatnot
  • Still spring release date
 
If this plays anything like the recent Wolfenstein games, I'm in. TNO was one of the best modern adaptions I've ever played and the most entertaining shooter I've played in years. Just give me insane action, ridiculous weapons and exploration.
 
I don't care what people say, I'm hyped for this one. I like the direction they're taking it and it's return to arena-eque gunplay. Also
the alpha was fun

Sprint not a thing.
Cover not a thing.
Serious military story not a thing.

Painkiller style arenas in.
Verticality in.
Heavy metal in.
Red Caco in.
Gore in.

In the year 2016.
 
SHOOT ALL THE DEMONS. The info sounds pretty rad. In like Flynn. The MP stuff sounds particularly interesting.
 
I just saw the new screens from the digital issue, and god damn... some of the enemies and environments (especially the new Baron of Hell... amazing!) look truly fantastic.

Given all the time this game's been in development hell (no pun intended), I know I shouldn't be too excited for it... but as a long-time fan of the franchise, I can't help myself.

And hey, regardless of the final game's quality, I'm willing to call it now: this game will have the best soundtrack of 2016. Mick Gordon + Doom is the stuff dreams are made of.
 
I'll be playing this on ps4. All I want is a lag free, non stutering mess. Make it impossibly fast passed and frantic. I want a blood pumping old school fps. That's all. Late.
 
Just read it, they are basically getting rid of story but if you want lore you can piece together what happened through data pads.... Exactly the way it should be

Not sure why they removed sprint, I liked having that extra control over speed in the original games. Especially since you could sprint in any direction.

We are making a new doom but you can't do what you normally did in doom 1 and 2!

Welp so far there goes the modding a thing that keeps the old doom still alive today after 20 years.

I really can't wait for this, definitely one of my most anticipated games of 2016. DOOM has always meant a lot to me, so it's hard to not to be excited. Especially after the alpha, which I loved, kind of felt like a mixture of DOOM and Q2/Q3. I ended up purchasing the digital issue of Game Informer to read the article and it hyped me even more so. Here's to hoping we get an actual release date and details regarding a collector's / special edition.
 
Wow, the Game Informer screens of the game look really good. I'm even more excited for the game now. 2016 is going to be an awesome year for games.

I think the actual reason is that the public "Rage version" of id Studio was several months late and virtually nothing ever came of it, so from Bethesda's perspective there's little point in putting in the effort. "We don't want to create a content disparity between more advanced mod tools on the PC and SnapMap on consoles" is just PR-speak reasoning that's more palatable than "Sorry, it's not worth the trouble."

Bethesda may change its mind at a later date, if people make their voices heard.
 
The alpha and playing at Quakecon was fun, but I really rekt a lot of people. I hope there is more to multiplayer than what they have shown thus far.
