"We've just seen the most successful Black Friday in the company's history," he said in an interview with the Financial Times. "We are now trying to benchmark against the success of the PlayStation 2 - or exceed it if possible."
The company has been able to stay ahead of rivals such as Microsoft's Xbox One and Nintendo's Wii U partly through exclusive content partnerships with leading games makers. These have included a deal with Activision Blizzard, the world's largest games publisher, for last month's launch of Call of Duty: Black Ops 3. Such deals have added to the PS4's popularity with hardcore gamers.

Damn, seems like everybody's breaking records this season. I even saw WiiiUs fly off shelves on BF. Good year for games all around.

Sony, you're not going to exceed the success of the PS2, at least not in terms of hardware units sold, so don't get comfortable with the notion that you're going to sell 155m+ PS4s. Ain't gonna happen.

In Europe, meanwhile, Germany has become Sony's largest console market for the first time, as gamers switch from PCs to PlayStations.

Since when the bold happened? I thought UK is Sony's largest console market in Europe.

Microsoft said this also. People are just wising up and waiting for the sales, so all the November sales are clustered into Black Friday.

What's the highest November sales for a Playstation console on NPD?

Think I saw 1.7million in the NPD thread.
Surely the PS4 smashed that number to take BF and November in the US

Edit:nvm it's ww sales.

Just FYI: The article makes it clear they are talking about WW sales.

Other surprising tidbits include:

  1. Germany is now their largest market in the EU

  2. They would consider 2.5 million VR sales (all VR platforms including PSVR) in year 1 to be a success.

  3. They do not expect PS4 to outsell PS2 LTD but do expect it to keep pace with PS2 for at least the first 5 years.

This is a bit confusing. When he says "the most successful Black Friday in the company's history", he's probably talking about SCE rather than all of Sony, right?! I guess so, since the article is about the PS4 and it's Andrew House speaking.

The PS4 has become the fastest-selling home console ever, exceeding the early performance of the PlayStation 2, which went on to sell more units than any other console over its 12-year life.

Is this true? I thought it was tracking just behind the Wii?

So is the wii the one with the best black Friday?

Can we get a top 10 or some npds from past November's. Sony's included. That would be nice.

Ww makes it hard then. May can ignore what i asked. But still interesting

Isn't it talking about all of the VR headset's that are coming next year? The big three Oculus, Vive and Playstation VR.

Yes, I also thought that was the case. Unless the pace of console sales in Germany picked up sharply, as I seem to recall (along with France) they were a few months behind the UK to hit 2 million PS4s sold over there.

Ahh you're right

IHS has predicted just 2.5m VR headsets will be sold next year, with PlayStation leading rivals such as Oculus and HTC's Vive.
"I don't think those kinds of volumes would be either unrealistic or a disappointment," Mr House said.

Lots of people I know who don't traditionally buy consoles got a Ps4 this black Friday, my sister, another female friend, it's reaching that mass market bracket which can do heavy numbers. I think Sony has to do more to keep that audience satisfied with games like until dawn or there could be trouble for the industry as a whole. This may also sound crazy but if I were Sony, I'd work out a deal with Nintendo to develop games for the ps4

You realize it can out-track PS2 and trail Wii right? PS2 had slower start but big peak and long tail and Wii had bigger start then died early with almost no tail to speak of.

I found this quote intriguing as well. Seems the UK is now the second strong hold of Playstation which is a bit surprising.

I wonder what's got German gamers over? Is it the flop of XB1 in EU, more PC gamers buying consoles or the Wii's tanked audience flocking to PS systems.

Probably a combo of all three.

Yes, all the signs are Sony is in the shit.

Clearly.

I choose Bloodborne. Clearly the only logical explanation.

First ~8 months of ps2 were japan only, so yes it's true because they ofc count from that point.
If you count from us start it isn't.

German PC gamers have been slowly switching to consoles. Moonstone made several posts about it from what I remember.

In the full article they say, they "expect the PS4 to match or outpace the PS2's sales in its first three to five years."

That's seems too reasonable. It makes me fear for the price of the kit.

It does seem incredibly realistic doesn't it? Kinda makes me happy that they don't have unrealistic expectations for something I'm convinced will be an incredibly niche product for the immediate future.

Dates aligned, the Wii was outselling the PS2 at this point in time.

You realize it can out-track PS2 and trail Wii right? PS2 had slower start but big peak and long tail and Wii had bigger start then died early with almost no tail to speak of.

So it's outselling the Wii as well then? Because that quote says "The PS4 has become the fastest-selling home console ever", so unless I'm misunderstanding it (quite possible) it's saying it's the fastest-selling console for its first 24 months on the market? I mean, fastest-selling in this instance means biggest-selling, right?!

In the full article they say, they "expect the PS4 to match or outpace the PS2's sales in its first three to five years."

Ahh, okay then. I only read the OP. It's good that they're keeping their expectations in check, because while I think the PS4 will be wildly successful throughout the gen, it's not going to reach PS2-levels of hardware sales.

More money perhaps, which is ultimately way more important to them.

Hence why I said "in terms of hardware units sold." Revenue wise you're probably right - the PS4 has got to be bringing more cash in for Sony than the PS2 ever did, what with PS+ and PSN/digital sales being a thing now. Not to mention the hardware is cheaper to manufacture, whereas at the time the PS2 was quite a costly system to make for Sony.

Very interesting.
Germany is now the largest console market for Sony in the Europe.
New thread worthy, imo. Anyone?
