If you were asked to recommend a couple animes to "curious" friends...

I agree, some of the horror elements in the second half are fantastic. But there are a few things that might still turn off new people from it. Including the slow start, things don't really pick up fully until the
second timeskip like 16-17 episodes in
imo, and a few of the episodes are really different. Once it gets going, it really gets going, though. I ended up watching the whole show in two days.
 
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni

"Yeah, it's about a guy who moves to a small town and meets some cute girls. I think you'll really enjoy it."
 
Azumanga Daioh because it's still the best light hearted funny moe anime.

Space Dandy for the sheer bizarreness and hilarity in every episode.

It helps that both (Space Dandy in particular) had good dubs.

Also Card Captor Sakura because whatever it was dumb and awesome.

Edit: how has there only been two mentions of Azumanga before me? What's wrong with you all?!

Forgot about Tekkonkinkreet. Lacks anything skeevy or embarrassing and folks can enjoy it for the visuals alone.

I know someone posted a summary of the end. Real shame they didnt animate it as a ova or something.
 
Honestly, I found the old Toonami line-ups to be a good source for introductory anime, as it had a decent variety of shows from different genres.

One series I would recommend is GunXSword. It's a hilarious series with a strong English dub that has a bit of a Cowboy Bebop feel, but is also very unique to itself. Lots of action, humor, and when the story really kicks into high gear, drama and tragedy.

Although it lacks an English dub, which can be hard on anyone not normally interested in anime, I would possibly recommend Garo: The Animation. It's a solid series with interesting characters and a story with a healthy mix of action, drama, and tragedy, but it's easy enough to follow.

This is pretty much the exact post I would have posted, including the moe garbage. Plenty of cringe inducing posts in this thread, already. Keep it up guys.
 
Cowboy Bebop, I've heard is a good starting one. My first was Eva but I honestly wouldn't recommend starting with it, however, YMMV. Wouldn't recommend Fate; Clannad; Steins;Gate, because it's my belief source material should come first, and since they're VNs originally you should read those first. Not saying they're bad adaptations because they're not, just wouldn't do them first.

Oh I guess Ghibli stuff is good. I really enjoyed Makoto Shinkai stuff too, and it's also a lot of short stuff.
 
Do a lot of posters think people should start with stuff like Cowboy Bebop then move on to Moe/cute/little girl stuff? Like it's a natural evaluation for animation fans? Most people could watch anime since the 80s and never go down that very niche path or ever want to.

So you are just assuming it at face value and wrote it off, do you even read what OP wrote? There is literally no intention or any hint of pandering. The show is all good family fun show which can be recommended to anyone at all ages.
