What was Big Boss doing this whole time while Venom Snake was with diamond dogs?

Establishing Zanzibar Land, a fictional country in Central Asia bordering Afghanistan, the former Soviet Union, China, and Pakistan. Some have theorized that its the same location as operation Snake Eater.

Big Boss was discreetly building Zanzibar Land in Central Asia while Punished "Venom" Snake slowly develops Outer Heaven (formerly Diamond Dogs) in Africa as a political ploy for Cipher. At some point, Big Boss falls into good grace with the U.S. government to head FOXHOUND prior to the events of the original Metal Gear where he sends off the young Solid Snake to "assassinate" his doppelganger.

Listening to Bowie.

Serious, canonical answer: Pretty much the same thing as Venom. He was still very active in conflict zones and took a direct part in several wars.

Hmmm, imagining an alternate plot of a game where BB is building Zanzibarland but he doesn't know Zero made a double of him operating in Africa building Outer Heaven.

Ahhh I see, so what happened to Miller after Phantom Pain? We know Ocelot is a part of the patriots and looks out for Big Boss's interests.

Miller stayed with FOXHOUND (I think?) and supported Snake via codec in MG 2.

If I remember right he rejoins FOXHOUND after MG 1.

He was killed in his home by Liquid just before MGS 1 :(

He believed he was BB long enough until it was too late (MG1)
It appears to be somewhat ambiguous like Reebot stated. Ocelot manages to break his self-hypnosis and reveals Big Boss's true scheme to Miller sometime shortly after Phantom Pain. An interesting tidbit comes from your Mother Base staff who occasionally expresses an awareness that you aren't the true Big Boss whereas supposedly Venom's role as the commanding officer of Outer Heaven is hidden by the events of Metal Gear.

He eventually died with Solid burning him with a can of deodorant right?
No, Big Boss was rendering comatose for a second time following the final battle in MG2: Solid Snake. Revolver Ocelot fought to keep his body hidden until he was able to resurface once more in the closing moments of MGS4: Guns of the Patriots having come to terms with his faulty interpretation of The Boss's will for world peace. His physical body was slowly reconstructed from the bodies of Liquid and Solidus Snake following their respective defeats.

Oh yeah I forgot about your staff also showing some awareness.

I think its fairly clear Venom knows at least by the end of the game, years prior to MG 1.

So many important things in MG 1 and 2, I wished they remade them ):

MG 1 and 2 have this weird horseshoe importance.

They started out on top, since they were the only ones in town, and then became more and more obsolete with MGS 1 and 2, ending at a point in which they basically didn't matter.

Then 3 reintroduced Big Boss, 4 made a lot of Big Boss and Outer Heaven references, Portable Ops and Peace Walker teased some critical elements, and now MGS V has the most direct talk of all.

I'm still confused as to whether Huey actually betrayed real gangsta numba 1 triple OG Big Boss during Ground Zeroes when he accepted the fake IAEA inspection of Mother Base. If he did, why would he do so?

I think it's left ambiguous. I don't think he knew it was Skull Face who would be inspecting, however he is still a bastard and a pathological liar.

Huey Emmerich honestly advocated for an armament inspection in an effort to paint MSF in the public light as a militant organization for world peace. Big Boss and "Kazuhira" Miller feared that it would lead to their private group falling under United Nations regulation. He wasn't aware at all that Skull Face and XOF were going to execute their assault prior to the real UN team reaching the site. In the end, Huey managed to survive the attack with XOF recovering him from the ocean shortly afterward and they eventually instructed him to design the ST-84 Metal Gear later with Dr. Strangelove.

EDIT: I believe his betrayal was born out of his obsession to weapons of mass destruction. He willingly built D-Walker and Battle Gear as a display of loyalty, but he was indeed responsible for experimenting with the parasite outbreak on Mother Base which he intended to sell to Cipher.

I don't see what's wrong with Skullface's motivations. He's a cruel and morally vacant character with noble ambitions, just like any Metal Gear villain. His motivations are almost identical to those of Solidus Snake in Sons of Liberty. He's trying to liberate the world from language based mind control, just as Solidus was trying to liberate the world from information control.

Of course, Skullface had other ambitions as well, as far as wanting revenge for his horrible childhood, and his plan for liberating the world had the unfortunate side effect of killing everyone who speaks English. But then, if Solidus had succeeded it would have thrown the world into chaos as well because it would've destroyed the communication systems that society had come to rely on as well as the Patriots AI.

The Phantom Pain is the spiritual successor to Sons of Liberty on so many levels. The Phantom Pain is to Sons of Liberty what Sons of Liberty is to Metal Gear Solid.

Do we know where Venom Snake is at the end of the game when he punches the mirror?
I think the ending is very surreal and metaphorical.
All that needs to be said is both John and your Avatar are Big Boss, and the Avatar is the one who commands Outerheaven, gets killed by Solid Snake.

I need them.

Also I encountered a pretty freaky glitch in my game
It's only in this viscount mission and occasionally it has been Quiet instead of a naked body.

There was absolutely nothing wrong with Skull Face, I foud that he was an excellent character. Kojima however did nothing special with him and he just died like a chump.

So I just finished the game. I don't hate the twist, but think it could have been way cooler with a few changes:

1. Venom is the 'evil' Big Boss from both MG1 and MG2
2. Venom doesn't have Big Boss' memories implanted in him. He's just a guy playing a part and he's the only one in on it (save for maybe Ocelot). The myth of Big Boss alone is enough to make him the greatest soldier in the world.
3. Remove the part where the real Big Boss is building up an army of soldiers in another part of the world. Great, I could have been playing virtually the same exact game except as the real deal Big Boss. Also, why does Venom creating Mother Base keep the legend alive and distract Cipher when Big Boss is doing the same thing somewhere else? How does building a mercenary base in the ocean gain more notiriety than building an entire nation?

Also, what's up with Paz? Doesn't the ending confirm that she blew up at the end of GZ? I checked the med bay assuming she's be gone now but she's still there. So she really did have a bomb in her vagina that was removed but not shown in GZ for some reason?

Welcome to the support group.

After you (tagged to give you one last chance to do the quest yourself)
show her a bunch of pictures she is revealed to be a hallucination Venom is having. In other words, yeah, she went out the way it was shown in GZ.

Do we know where Venom Snake is at the end of the game when he punches the mirror?
Venom Snake was still on Mother Base when listening to the truth tape from Big Boss based on the Diamond Dogs logo in the mirror reflection. A common interpretation concerns a time lapse occurring when he flips the cassette over to "Operation Intrude N313" which was the FOXHOUND mission for the Outer Heaven Uprising, the events of the original Metal Gear game. Once he punishes the mirror, it's notable that the O.H. logo has replaced the Diamond Dogs emblem. I believe the scene serves a symbolic purpose more than whether he's located at Mother Base or somewhere inland at the eventual site of his rest place. It probably wouldn't hurt to just believe that he's still running Diamond Dogs/Mother Base before inserting the tape next to the MSX2. Afterward, he's directly at his own Outer Heaven fortress.

Like, every main villain but Coldman and Skull Face is a villain that hold their own in a fight. They're not only story villains, but actual barriers to overcome in the game. Imagine if you never actually fought Volgin or Solidus. Your memory of them would likely be less fond. How would a boss fight work with Skull Face? I dunno, something like Ocelot fights I'd imagine. Without that conflict being brought into the mechanics, he falls flat as a villain.

Unrelated: Wow Psycho Mantis gets fucking nerfed when he grows up

As a character, he's great.

But as a villain/antagonist, he's terrible.

His plan is nonsensical and self defeating. He never inhibits or stops our heroes for longer than two minutes. He actively works against his own goals. And, really worst of all, he never does anything to our heroes in game before dying.

He deserved much better.

Phantom Big Boss has a better marketing sense than Original Big Boss.

Outer Heaven is such a better name than Zanzibar Land.

Also Ocelot has a belated homage to Phantom by naming his own PMC Outer Heaven.

The actual IAEA never sent them an inspection request, based on the tapes from GZ.

This game isn't canon so I wouldn't worry about names. Not to mention "Outer Heaven" is an idea, not necessarily a place. Besides, the real gangsta numba 1 triple OG Big Boss is the one that came up with the name Outer Heaven in PW.

Her entire story-arc is tied to the extraction of wandering MSF soldiers in the side-ops list. Whenever you capture each respective trooper, you can just visit Paz to hand her a photograph which builds to a conclusion after ten separate trips. You're only about to witness a single scene per visit so you'll either have to wait twenty-four hours with the Phantom Cigar or depart/return from the ACC for the next opportunity to unlock. On the chance you want full spoilers for her character,
she was merely a hallucination born out of the Medic/Venom Snake's PTSD for failing to discover the fatal bomb. Events depicted at the conclusion of Ground Zeroes were the truth. Ocelot and Miller's presence was additionally a figment of his imagination.

Ah, gotcha. I stand corrected if the source comes from the Phantom Pain cassettes.

You've find the post-game easter egg!

Bro this is the canonest game, seeing it is a numbered entry.

Chances are the medic, proto phantom big boss suggested outer heaven.
