Street Fighter V Roster Discussion: P-P-P-P-PATTERN BREAKER

Sorry, this thread is moving quite quick, so need to ask -- what is it that's making people believe there will be no SF3 reps? Is there new info?
Currently we have the Siliconera rumours - Mika + Karin, Urien + Alex - coupled with a Capcom rep saying "8 characters you'd expect to see in SF, 4 vets that haven't appeared in a while" so if we assume both at face value because the rep statement is vague as fuck and Siliconera teased two characters at a time, with one of those being confirmed, we might get Karin and a couple more SF2 characters instead of SF3 characters.

16 is too stingy for a series like SFV in terms of fitting 'enough' of everything in. We know more are coming, but it's pretty brutal competition for those 12 spots (only 9 since Ryu, Chun, and Ken are 'mandatory').

I assume there will be DLC characters out of the gate. Maybe 4 on day 1? or maybe 1 on day one and three more each month afterwards?

I think 4 at release would probably rub too many people the wrong way. If they were going to do something like that I could see them at least staging it as "New DLC character every other week for 2 months" or something.

If character wind up costing $10 a piece, 4 at launch would really drive up the day 1 cost and bring a lot of negative press imo.

My theory is 1 DLC character at launch at most.

What kind of logic is this? How are they more competent than SF2? Graphics and roster are irrelevant - but if we're to talk that, NG's roster was very small and many SF3 favourites like Urien and Q didn't come around until revisions - , NG and 2I - more specifically NG - lack many systems and mechanics that made 3S great. You couldn't tech throws until 2I nor were there EX moves, no universal overheads until 3s, balance was a mess with stuff like 2I Ibuki making Chun seem tame. Being faster or having combos isn't naturally better, otherwise every game out there would be inferior to stuff like Blazblue with massive combos, a billion subsystems and whatnot.

They were shit games compared to ST and A3. I never said vanilla 2 and Alpha 1 were that good, though they weren't bad they were extremely flawed, SF2 was buggy to fucking hell and made Dong Dong Never Die look like ST balance wise

Okay, so from a playability POV 3S is overall the best of the lot. But there are some things 2I did better even there. Air parrying was much more balanced in 2I; you couldn't do it indefinitely like in 3S, so that favored ground parry. That favored a good gorund game over jumping, which indirectly favored footies and zoning as a result, since those are big parts of a good ground game.

It's not like IV doesn't have balance issues; vanilla might as hell had the subtitle "Sagat's Rise" b/c he was something unto himself in that game. And with a cast as big as Ultra's, there's balance issues. Every fighting game is gonna have "balance issues" to an extent, that's why tiers exist. If all the fighters were perfectly balanced there would be no tiers, and then that'd homogenize the cast.

You even mentioned a way they were more competent than 2, or at least one measure you can't use to say 2 is more competent than them; EX attacks. The 2 games didn't have them either, so how can you say 2 is better on that point over NG, which at least has multiple Super Arts?

I'm only talking technical competence here, not "artistic", like character designs, character roster choice, music or whatever. Even NG has a better combo system, faster default play speed, and deeper level of game mechanics than all of the 2 games. I don't see why it's so hard to admit that.

I assume there will be DLC characters out of the gate. Maybe 4 on day 1? or maybe 1 on day one and three more each month afterwards?

That wouldn't sit well with me. Wouldn't sit well with a lot of people, unless you can unlock them with Fight Money on Day 1.

And even then, grinding in SP better be worth it. The story better be tops, and closer to the III timeline than II (like IV was).

Siliconera said they'll be in the game, they didn't necessarily say that it'd be in the vanilla roster. But Matt has said they'll tease DLC characters before the launch, sot hey could be in that.

When did Matt say that? I remember (gamestop) him only saying that they'll have a constant stream of characters being revealed for dlc after the game launches, but that's about it.

Le Claw face.

As much as I want some SF3 characters to be added, I still think Balrog/Boxer is gonna be in there somewhere, especially if this game is going to focus on the downfall of Shadaloo. Vega & Balrog usually come as a pair, I think the only game that had one but not the other was Street Fighter EX2, and that wasn't even developed by Capcom.

I'm liking the words you're saying. We can't be not having Balrog and Vega, yo.

I was referring to this, assuming that it's accurate

In one of Dahlgren's reccent interviews, he mentioned that they'll be doing DLC character reveals prior to the game coming out- those are likely hitting Jan/Feb.

It was one or two of his PAX video interviews where he mentioned "continuous" content updates- we'll know a few of the fighters on deck prior to the game releasing, but only the base 16 are available day 1.

NRS did the same thing as they announced the characters for the Kombat Pack a month before the game launched.

He's mentioned it 2-3 times at least in various impressions vids that it's the game SFV most reminds him of in how it plays.

Actually now that I think about it some more, I don't remember his interviews at all from Pax. There were two streams showing off Mika. The twitch stream and the gamestop stream on youtube. The twitch stream featured Mike Ross and Combofiend. The youtube stream featured Combofiend playing attendees with a pad.

Matt appeared on the Gamestop expo stream for the SFV tournament.

I'll try and find pax interviews that were off stream.

I just can't see them shipping sf3 characters with the supposed emphasis of story, and Charlie's confirmed ties to the illuminati.

Urien, hidden/true boss, all tied up.

I mean really if we want to play the "Story" card than Alex has no point being in this game.

2 days til new character, unless they get leaked.
EuroGAF will be awake to see him, AmericanoGAF would prob. do the crazy thing, drink lots of coffee see the reveal and skip work :V

A small correction, Sagat was not the strongest character in Vanilla, everyone agrees that the discovery of vortex made Akuma the strongest character. Think of how pre-2007 everyone thought Yun was the strongest character not Chun.

Fuck this, I'm done for today. Can't be bothered to bicker with all these people about the same shit. Have fun with all your stale, stereotyped fan-faves!

Sorry, it's just hard to take seriously someone who's ranting about how blah blah can't accept change and then turns around asking for another character from the 90s.

nah bro alex has some next level theory story involvement. him and gill don't look alike for nothing, and he was the 'main character' of 3 for a reason.

Anyways, I hope we see this alt for him when he finally makes it in (BELIEVE)...

Sure looks like the Criminal Uppers tornado thingie.
But that's what Ono wants us to believe. It's not Cody. I wont fall for your tricks Ono.

I don't see how everyone could agree on that. Akuma was very strong but many characters where slept on and not explored enough for a conclusion to be made for vanilla sf4 imo, not even akuma. 3s has been played for many years and has been explored a lot more.

edit: just saw the new photo, maybe rachid uses the power of the wind/sand perhaps. I don't think it would be cody.

Looks like an ice tornado.
You can see some snow particles. The move might be ending in that picture.
Probably that ice person in the london stage.

Eisbahn confirmed?

Joe Higashi as a guest character!!!
Due to the column's height I immediately thought Goenitz.

Can't think of who else it could logically be other than Cody or a new character. Just to think somewhat creatively, I'll hope that wind tunnel is the after-effect hitbox of some spinning Shinryuuken/Poison DP-like move that hasn't sent Ryu flying yet :p

Just assuming it's a Tiger Uppercut/Storm Typhoon projectile is too predictable/not very fun.

What stages do we know about at this point?

Marketplace
London Train Station
Waterfall
Brazil

Am I missing any? I wish they'd show off more stages.

It does look like a criminal upper, but we are talking Brazil and Rio slum here! Plenty of criminality! Maybe Cody has got himself a rival?:p

Storm? Oh shit.

Cody has to be near you for that tornado to come out. As much as I love Cody, and he deserves to be in this game along side Oro, it's not him in Ono's tweet.

At this point I'd rather they show off new stages than characters... at this rate we're lucky if we get 8 stages in the base game. I fear it's gonna be a MKX situation where there's tons of characters but too few stages.
