Ex-Bungie composer Marty ODonnell wins legal fight (document in the OP)

Shaking my head at so many people blaming Activision here - this is proof that Bungie are completely capable of acting like fuckheads of their own volition. Rather than standing beside one of their founding members when his work on the game was threatened of being undermined, they chose to fire him and remove all benefits and everything owed to him.

It's also entirely possible that Marty's music just sucked and people at bungie actually liked activisions music better.

There are great tracks in destiny, but also really bad ones.

The man has provided soaring iconic scores to some of the most incredible trailers ever produced.

I'd put my faith in Marty over a faceless Activision suit every time.

Hey, I'm a composer myself. Sometimes I make shitty music and my clients pick another composer - it happens.

Hail, peons, for I have come as ambassador from the great and bountiful Blueberry Butt Explosion
Great news!

I met Marty for the first time at the PAX Sony party this past weekend, and it was incredibly interesting to hear about how all this went down.

Destiny - a game full of misunderstandings. Glad that I deleted this trash and that I've never paid more money than the 60$ for the orginal game for it. And gratz to Marty. He only gets what he deserved. Fuck Activision

Honestly, if i would have worked on Destiny and saw how it turned out, i also wouldnt have been very motivated either.
His music is a lot better than the game itself btw. Halo was completed with Martys music, Destiny is overshadowed by it.

Who is this Ryan (Harold Ryan) guy? To the public Bungies lead staff was Jason and Joe...at least to me.

return, O’Donnell is required to return any Bungie property that was not specifically gifted to him — copies of a CD version of Music of the Spheres — and O’Donnell has done so already. Bungie appealed the preliminary ruling by the arbitrator, and its appeal was denied.

Oh no, not a CD!

Yeah, but this is a completely different situation.

The article reads as though Bungie had a huge stick up its ass, not that he composed mediocre scores. So I dont really understand what youre trying to get at in this context.

Well in the end his Music was replaced - probably for a reason.

I dunno how I feel about this. Activision is terrible, no doubt. But threatening co-workers? Disrupting meetings? Not wanting to compose until a "bug free" game environment?
He sounds like he carried a lot of the blame here. No matter what transpires (even if they decide to replace music in a trailer), you have to be professional.

It still hurts me that Bungie went with fucking Activision.

Either way glad that Marty got what was his. Hope this weakens Ryan.

Apparently he made the mistake of sticking to the old Bungie's standards.

You guys should really read the article.

From the article it actually sounds like Bungie wants to release Spheres now anyway.
So it must have been all right, plus I think they have used it in several trailers as well.
Unless I am misunderstanding this.

Obviously it must all be pretty complicated, so hard to judge all the parties from reading what is such a small summery of something that spans years.

So how come you got the chain of events all wrong?

The replaced trailer music is what started it all - long before any legal battles.

Maybe you should read it again.

When you said 'in the end his music was replaced' I took it to mean that you meant the actual soundtrack. Who the fuck cares about the trailer, we can speculate all day as to why it would be changed, ultimately it's only a catalyst here - that's simply corporate meddling no matter what. For all we know the Activision exec liked his score but didn't think it would help sell the game as well as what they went with/evoke the feeling they wanted for the trailer.

I mean, every movie in the world for the last 5 years has its music in the trailer replaced with fucking inception horns, I'm sure it's not the composers that think that's a great idea.

Uhh I know I read that? Activision came in and said we aint using this music we using this music.

Something a pub shouldnt interfere with imo. So yes Marty was in the right to be pissed off.

Oh well i just dont understand why you would want to defend Bungie or Activision here lol, when Marty has been great at Bungie and his contact with fans has always been great

GlamFM, you go to some insane lengths to defend Bungie and Destiny but saying that Marty's music is bad is probably the craziest thing I've seen you say.

Talking about the score for the trailer. This is what this is all about.

Activisions picked another one - they thought it was better and maybe it was.

The tell tell fanboy sign. Completely throwing logic out the window and door.

Feel free to explain this "logic" to me.

You guys should really read the article.

He was a major stock holder and had creative control over the music, he created a lot of music that wasn't used because activision decided they didn't want to use it (for whatever reason) he argued they had no right to do that/wasn't their place to make changes. They fired him because he wasn't happy with what had happened and wasn't working to the standard they wanted and took his stocks away even though that was only supposed to happen if he quit, which he hadn't.

Activision and to a lesser extent Bungie shouldn't have done what they did and he successfully sued them.

Pretty sure you could split this thread into those who work in a corporate environment and those that don't. Such is the subjective nature of reality....

.
And Activision could piss off. This was exactly what people were afraid of with the publishing deal; that some fuck brained idiot at Activision would start meddling creatively in their output

I understand that.

What I don't understand is why you would even entertain the idea that some suit would know what's a better fit for a Bungie product more than Marty. At that point the man had scored 5 Halo games and they all had amazing soundtracks.

For being such a huge Bungie fan you're quick to throw Marty under the bus.

Yeah I agree this is kind of the whole point, it wasn't their place to meddle with things and they undid everything that the guy created by fucking up his relationship with Bungie. It's irrelevant if they liked the music or not.

It was never about the music for the game, but for a fucking trailer. A marketing tool which I guess the publisher rightfully has some control over.

Marty acted like a spoiled little brat and felt like his honor was under attack.

His actions afterwards led to him being fired - rightfully so.

Bungie or Activision tried to screw him over with his stock - not cool.

He got it back - rightfully so.

Everybody is a loser here, everybody is a dick - including Marty.

He had creative control over the music! It was his job! It doesn't matter if it was a trailer it's still for the game.

He acted like a spoiled brat because he didn't want Activision to have artistic control over his music?

Activision and Bungie are the only parties here who come out looking badly.
