Fighting Games Weekly | July 27 - Aug 2 | Beta luck next time

Yeah I know the germ thing is mostly me but its the same feeling as my friend if he got his shoes stepped on, even accidentally. I had to peel him away from a younger kid who walked backwards on his kicks. Its more a personal space sphere that gets penetrated that bothers me. To extend one's hand is to invite someone to their space as a sign of respect.

I know Onisan meant well and trying to bring the hype.

Also, I hate wrestling almost as much as I hate Anime. Save us Viscant!
Viscant mains Elphelt. He can't help you.

:\ "ken is no longer a shoto" will be the "vergil is not a good character" pre-release commentary that stays with sf5 forever
Those are two different things though. One is describing character archetype while the other is describing character relative strength.

Would be more similar to saying "Vergil is no longer a Dante clone" or something like that.

Dunno- Xrd accomplishes so much through art style rather than horsepower brute force methods that it's anyone's guess. If they're putting it out on the same nesica machines though, there's no reason why they couldn't port it to ps3 as well.
They're starting to use more horsepower with Revelator though. Background have actual lighting with reflections on some stages, character affected by the stage lighting, actual light sources on projectiles, better more detailed shading on characters, etc...

Ken in SFV IS a Shoto, he was even revealed as such:

People can say whatever they want though.

man, if arc sys actually brings back a.b.a. before the sixth edition of this game i'll be surprised and ecstatic

didn't think we'd see alt costumes considering their animation technique. it's a shame they can't shit them out like team ninja does for doa

Ken is a shoto with a command run...

The command run is actually pretty dope but kinda wish they moved him further away from his roots.

fall back off max ya'll. It was just a knee jerk reaction to the video which was designed to show of the differences in Ken.

Ryu and Ken seem way more fun in SFV than they've ever been.

Ryu's parry is great because it is unique and has a built-in weakness (the recovery), changing his approach to the neutral game. He now has a way to discourage various tactics without relying on his simple poke/fireball game.

Ken is obviously designed as a rushdown character and has been given lots of new variations on his moves that we haven't seen before. I bet he has more frame positive moves than Ryu, as well.

Both characters are familiar, but still different enough that optimal play will require a new approach.

How good is the parry tho? I think I seen him parry another ryus low forward and still not have enough frame advantage to punish. It also comes with a counter hit state iirc so it seems like a really risky thing to throw out even if you know they gonna push a button. Parrying jump ins seems like kinda a bad idea.

Certainly is a good way to build gauge by using it on fireballs tho

I'm guessing Ryu players will figure out when is the best time to parry and I'm certain it will be used. Daigo was already using it to punish up close fireballs.

Even if they're using more horsepower for Revelator, it's not like Xrd PS3 and PS4 look the same.
There's differences in the visual effects between the two (Chipp's Find Me for example. And of course PS3 still has the option of quality/processing priotity.

I could see the PS3 version still omitting a bunch of stuff.

Parry is good against telegraphed single hits that have recovery such as Bison stomp and projectiles. Also good against multi-hit moves with practice.

The key to utilizing parry is to know the recovery of what you're parrying. With that knowledge you'll know if parry will grant you a punish or not. Don't treat it like a 3S parry (ie, you can punish almost everything) and that's when it works well.

It's more Ryo's parry from KOF than an actual 3S "parry".

I had a guy parry my Knee Press and punish. :(

The shanghai pro ranking tournament is supposed to be starting tomorrow, and there is no mention of a stream yet.

Starts in about 10 hours on capcomfighters, but it will also be on douyutv according to topanga.

players confirmed:
Tonpy
KOK
Misse
Tokido
Fuudo
Xian
Humanbomb
That chinese vega player

and probably Dakou, Dark Jiewa, and Xiaohai.

I still dont know why people front like Combofiend lied or something

because people can't fucking tell the difference between an "online beta" and demo.

EDIT: and people on the internet commonly feel the need to direct their anger towards the most public figure head. *COUGH reddit pao *COUGH

Source? Couldn't find that info on the CPT website.
Edit: oh, topanga. Cool.
It's a CPT event. Capcom fighters should automatically stream it, right?
Ranking events are not automatic. Combo breaker wasn't on capcom fighters, nor was Texas showdown.

the fighting game wiki talk from earlier got me thinking about a potential format for organizing character knowledge.

the basic layout would be similar to published guides and existing where each move and even certain actions/concepts are broken down individually, into their own section on the character page. another way to conceptualize it would be to think each move or ability or even tactic as its own 'tag.'

let's say you look up Ryu and read the section on his low forward. you'd get all your basic basic sort of 'irrefutable' details like frame data, hitboxes, mechanics notes, etc. except that each move/tag/category (however you want to break it down) would also include an expandable comment section with a vote system. like a kind of rap genius/reddit built into a wiki.

this would allow each individual move to get a steady stream of comments/notes over time from players who at least care enough to care about that level of specificity in character discussions. presumably, a lot of basic stuff would be the most upvoted, but random niche details would still find a place, and misleading/salty/stupid notes would ideally be downvoted.

to take it a step further, you could include sections as specific as 'crouch' or 'backdash' to really get into some nitty gritty details.

hopefully something like this would help preserve and distill some of the lore and tech that's buried on page 32 out of 89 in some decade-old thread on some clunky old forum, or lost in the void of twitter/personal notes/non-archived stuff.

this would get murkier and less effective when it comes to broader categories or strategic or matchup discussion, which require more than simply providing notes on a single move, but sensible categorization/tagging and search-ability could probably be figured out.

The fact that so many people lost their minds at the beta means there aren't enough PC gamers out there. We're kind of used to betas that are jank :P

Honestly while I would be annoyed at not getting a chance to play I would be doubly happy that all of this shit gets ironed out months before release. It's like a vote of confidence that they're committed to making the experience work properly... unlike SFxT where the sound online didn't work 90% of the time on release for weeks. I'm sure SFxT revisionist historians will be sure to forget that little detail when slapping on 5 layers of rose tinted goggles.

I don't feel any sympathy for CPM monsters that promoted the hell out of their streams and are now whining that they couldn't scoop up the donation and sub dollars from SFV. I would ignore them alongside people who complain about why a beta is broken.

Now all we need is ASW to do open betas and loketests here in North America so I can tell them that their Xrd lobby system sucks. Yeah, that'll never happen lol

Trying to finish their game before the next version drops.

Daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaamn

Oh I remember those sound issue very fondly. I also remember the insane lag fest of tag matches with 3 or 4 players. The only way to fix the sound issues was to make the netcode worse.

Even though the beta didn't work, I still want them to actually have a functional beta so we don't run into some bizarre shit like that ever again.

That Shangai event is so ergh. They only announced the date a few weeks ago and it's largely on Friday so non-Pro players from Japan that want points or a chance to get to the Asia Finals can't go.
