Fighting Games Weekly | July 27 - Aug 2 | Beta luck next time

Splatoon hype too real right now. It's helping to console me after not getting into the SFV beta even once so far. :lol

It's that time again...

Melee: (When I was younger) Ganondorf, Luigi and Falco. All of them had a dair stomp and that stuff was always my favorite for launching people upward off the ground or spiking them for max satisfaction. Nowadays, I stick to Falco alone because he's the nice technical counterpoint to my Marth.

Brawl: Pit and Lucas. Pit because fuck yea old school revivals, arrow loops and knivestaffbowthing. Lucas because amazing up smash and a bunch of cool/janky ways to get serious damage. Also an awesome set of meteor smash attacks.

Smash 4: Greninja and Zero Suit Samus. Greninja is a total delight to play despite being the butt of the Smash balance team's joke. ZSS in Smash 4 just feels so right.

Marvel 3: Amaterasu, Felicia, Dormammu, Phoenix. This is basically all the characters I used for some amount of time before finding better synergy elsewhere. Love the characters to death but probably suck more than anyone else at using.

Third Strike: Yang. After based Mak, I found myself interested in dabbling in Yang because I loved the command dash and what felt like high speed offense. I'd soon learn that this wasn't to be but I still mess with him when given the option

SF4: Gouken is that dude. No matter how much of a struggle character he was/is, I have tons of love for this character and I really don't know why. Viper was cool too, but I definitely didn't have the hands for her when I was first messing with SF4. Fei was another guy I liked mostly because yay damage and ease of use, though I'm sure a bunch of posters here are going to DansGame me for saying as much. :lol

Guilty Gear +R: Jam. She's basically hyper anime Makoto. How the fuck could this be anything but awesome? :lol

Vampire Saviour: Q-Bee, BB Hood, & Jon Talbain.
I want to add Demitri here as well because VS2 but no one played that.

This picture is so perfect. :lol

What is the joke about Greninja? That is the character I thought was kinda cool to use. Haven't seen him much if at all at EVO stream.

I live in the Bay Area (Cali) and had little to no luck but a couple of friends got on for a couple of hours and a few dozen matches but I don't have that bachelor-life tech.

He was top tier at the start of the game and then was nerfed to mid-tier in subsequent patches. Then his glitches were removed in patches that didn't addressed more problematic characters like Sonic, and Diddy, which caused the Meme.

He is definitely not mid tier, lol.

He kept getting nerfs every patch for good reasons. Turned into a meme. Still a fantastic character that no one has mastered.

Does making a character with extremely good tools high execution make them balanced?

I like characters like that. E. Ryu is a more acceptable character imo cuz you know the player is gonna drop something at some point.

3s chun is harder to swallow cuz of the fact that what makes her good is quite simple.

I also like the fact that really powerful stuff like ewgf is locked behind a barrier.

Eddie is still a dick.

You tell me how tiers work. Greninja isnt S, A+, A or A-.

At best, he's a B.

B is mid tier material.
Most people put him in A.

Tiers work by the capacity of a character to win in a variety of matchups. You can not be top 10 and still be A in a 50 character class if you have lots of good or even matchups.

You need to show me some of these charts then. There is nobody advancing the meta to show he is A tier.

I've been trying to learn stick.

Inputs are easy enough in SFIV.

Then I switch to Tekken and everything I thought I learned goes down the drain.

I think that's for different reasons LOL. You have reached a level of dexterity in Tekken where you can do maximum Flapping Butterfly loops in real match, something a very diminutive portion of the Tekken community is remotely capable of doing. I dunno if you reached a level of play in SF that requires inputs that are as analogously difficult which is probably making playing stick easier in SF than in Tekken.

No, it just makes the character reserved for high dexterity players and behind a wall for those who can't execute.

And that's ok, because what's the point of playing a high execution character when you can play a way easier one that is better or just as strong. As long as the execution bonus is minor it's fine imo.

It's not ok because high dex players can make easy character stronger and complex by figuring out tight links etc. Basically, you have a character anyone can enjoy at all skill levels and then you make a character only a small group can enjoy.

You can make a complicated character without the execution barrier that all can enjoy instead.

I would play Zato even if he werent S tier. Lots of people played Morrigan when she was considered low tier.

He's biased. :p

The Japanese tier list has Greninja as C+, IIRC.
Damn, all of Japan got together and agreed on a tier list? Impressive. This is why the USA never wins Evo.

When did execution become such a dirty word? There is a reason some tools have execution associated with them... A dp is made more interesting by the fact that you have to be holding forward at the start of the motion and are therefore commiting in some way.Things like that make a game deeper in ways people seem to take for granted.

if you're going to invest in a game competitively for 5+ years, there is 0 incentive not to always just train with the 'best' character regardless of how difficult the day-1 execution feels. the scene always moves past it - i remember for a long time american players were saying that roll-cancelling 100% of the time in cvs2 was impractical. whoops.

the only time when this isn't the case is when there is an alternative character that's just as good, yet requires less concentration / mental fortitude over a set.

Yeah, the top areas in Japan did get together and release a tier list.

Lol, why are you so salty?

I don't believe in tier lists, they're too much in flux when it matters for me to care. Fun, though.

I tried to tell everybody that Koromaru was the best character in P4A and nobody believed me.

They didn't have a reason to believe you!

It's become a dirty word because more and more folks are looking to for competition that's level. It's one barrier that could prevent a player that otherwise would be a top competitor is likely the reason. Think about why we use weight classes in things like boxing or MMA. Why do you think most of classic games give players the exact same set of tools like say chess. Obviously being a fighting game with different chars and such means it can't be totally equal but having barriers that prevent some from doing certain things is something that can be minimized is likely the rational.
