Valdis Story: Abyssal City on Steam

Watched a few gameplay vids - is this game as ridiculously slow as it looks? It looks painful.

Huh? Slow? It's anything but. Combat is very fast paced, and the character can dash pretty quickly (and can eventually chain three dashes). It's one of the last games I'd ever call "slow"...

A true final boss? That sounds really good. May run the game and see what it is about then, thanks.

I simply must find these 2 new bosses and fight S-rank them

Edit: Found the Manawar
It can be found in Magus' old bossroom some time after you've beaten her
. I don't know the exact triggers. Manawar is relatively simple boss, but deals quite mental damage

God damn, simply surviving through Eye of Myrgato fight on Hard is a pain on my Int caster Reina, not to mention S-ranking it.

Tried all types of tactics, but in the end, breaking the runes with the staff and then spamming Power Geyser with the reckoning affliction and the anti-demigod accessory brought the quick victory I needed. 1k+ damage per hit, and this is the first fight where I straight up had my healing spell equipped instead of any damage buffs. Even with buffs my melee damage was way too low in this particular fight to get results

Any tips in how to beat the Spider thing in the Ziggurat? That thing is kicking my ass with her stupid stuns, and one of her attack can send you flying through the room so you may end landing in the room.

Yeah, I don't know. I booted it up again, moved around a little, and closed and uninstalled it. I don't know why, it has all the elements that I should like about a game - it's basically the game I've been building in my head for ages - but I just don't enjoy playing it. I don't really know why.

Ah well.

It's too late to give you any hints probably, but I'll leave this here for other people:

The widow mini-boss in Ziggurat is easily interrupted by even your weakest spells. First kill the closest gun-wielding demon, then stay in one place. Whenever the widow lowers to the floor in order to attack you, cast a side spell and a few attacks before she goes away. Rinse and repeat until dead. She shouldn't get a single opportunity to attack once the demon's dealt with.

If you've been to Engineer's Palace, infinite her to death with a few quick hits followed by Lightning Chain

Fancy seeing this topic, I actually played through this a few weeks ago. I ended up liking it quite a bit. It's a well done Castlevania-style game that manages to be have its own feel in terms of gameplay and aesthetics. It took a while to click with me, but once it did, the control of your character just felt really good. It's one of those games where you really feel accomplished in learning how to play it well. There are some rough edges, and probably too many superfluous elements, but overall a really tightly produced game. Hope the devs keep making this sort of game.

Hey, anyone know the best way to strengthen my character? I have to get the valdis mark and divine dust. I finally figured out I have to beat two bosses to get the keys to reach the respective areas...but the jump in difficulty for the bosses is insane. I literally do a few points damage to one of them (blue one).

The game has had its hard moments up until now, but overall difficulty has been rather moderate to easy. There is no way i'll be able to beat these latest bosses, though.

thanks

The blue and red Eye bosses? They're optional superbosses.

The only boss that you need to beat to get a key (Demon Key) is guarded by a rematch with previous bosses you've fought before, they're in the mines.

Angel Key is just guarded by a bunch of angels in the sewers.

lol. Shit. When I was looking at the map I noticed that the area those bosses were in glowed with corresponding colours, so I assumed they had the keys. Thanks.

Valdis Story is getting another awesome update real soon!

http://endlessfluff.wordpress.com/2014/05/16/valdis-story-update/

Vladyns combat mechanics are about 97% completed. His story on the other hand has a long way to go. Implementing it is tricky due to him starting at a different location in the city. This requires a lot of design work in terms of scene checking and difficulty progression. Above is a look at his development in the early stages. I hope to get him to the point where his skill tree can be tested for balance within the month.

YouTube link to Vladyn's combat: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=euCm93oGSOc

- New optional zones. We will be adding at least 2 new optional zones (mostly geared towards end game). Caro is working on the concepts for one of the new zones so maybe she will post about them soon if you ask enough.

- A couple of new items/vendors have been added. There is also a new item type called “Elixirs” that last for a set duration and can provide resistance to things like cold damage in unheated zones among interesting properties. Only one “Elixir” can be active at a time.

- New bosses. There are a few new bosses, including Abbigail whose concept was shown in an earlier post. Abbigail boss battle is done pending some balance tweaks after she gets tested by more players.

- Le’Roy has arrived. Not gonna say much about her yet. We are also working on bugs and various changes to address video memory issues (This takes up most of the time so far). I’m considering filling one of the empty crew member slots in this update, so keep an eye out for another contest.

I just beat the game and thought it was awesome. No idea why this game got so little attention. I also didn't realize they were going to add more characters/bosses and areas, that's great news. :)

Got it for 2.5$ at the GOG summer sale without really knowing much about it.
I just beat it and I have to say that this is a superb Metroidvania game that does some things better than the best of the genre. The combat mechanics are the best I've ever seen in such game, the music is phenomenal and the graphics are top notch!
The only gripes I had with it is the platforming which is a bit stiff and unreliable(nothing game breaking though), and the last hour of the game which had some bad boss designs(no one likes a boss that heals itself!!) and a couple of difficulty spikes!

Go get it!

Sort of surprised they're still working on this, really. I guess that's what they get for greying out 2 of the playable character slots in the current game when they could have just kept that shit under wraps and made a sequel.

It'd be a bad move to weasel out of kickstarter promises. They revealed plans to make a 3rd and 4th character when they had reached 20k (8k original goal), and they got funding up to 49k with the campaign

I backed this on kickstarter, I was not disappointed with the final game.

Some of the platforming puzzles are just brutal, that or I just suck. :-/

i make so few topics that it is really weird when one of them gets bumped...

that being said, I was just talking to my friend the other day wondering about when the hell the other two characters are coming

I'm just glad that with that update (and some much smaller bugfixes) EndlessFluff Games will be able to properly wrap up Valdis Story as feature&content complete and move on to other projects. There's talent in that small (2-person?) team and I'd like to finally see it not honour bound to updating a game that released 18 months ago.

Holy shit @ those additions... really nice for a free update. :O I gotta revisit this game, I beat it with Reina a while ago but barely played with the dude (forgot his name).

Been waiting for this for a long time. I love this game.

Not having played in about a year, Vladyn was a bit confusing. He starts in the second town and his first boss is the poison bubble guy. But he's neat. More pet-focused than I was expecting.

Gilda seems a lot better for people coming back to the game after a long absence, since she starts in the same place as the other two characters. She's a lot of fun - very close-range combo-oriented like Reina, with lots of mana management and swapping between magic types mid-combo.

Have the devs announced any ports for this? I played a little bit and was impressed but I don't really like playing games in front of my PC.

Oh woooow, Gilda changes a lot of systems in this game that Reina and Wyatt had in common

Instead of a block, you get a guardbreaking, launching, magic burst that takes mana and changes you magic souls on the fly. So it's basically an attack and a soul switch.

In fact, every one of her moves take mana if she has any, but to counter that, the button you press to use magic on other characters, actually charges mana on her instead.

Reina was a hybrid. Gilda is a straight up melee mage. She also has some interesting skills on the melee tree that make her stronger as she hoards specific types of monster drops in inventory, up to 25 pieces. Stuff like Polished Stones and whatnot.

Instead of Up/Side/Down/Air, she has Light/Heavy/Switch/AirHeavy. She has no separate spells as far as I know, everything is built as part of her melee move set.

She starts with poison and unholy element souls. Kinda gives her a disadvantage against demons but on hard it's not too bad.

This is what you can do with her after getting first Skill Cancel, apologies for Gifcam ruining it with visible greenscreen

QXxq0cy.gif

I do the soul switch midair and change from unholy to poison. Even my basic melee changes element

I'm thinking about going Luck-build with Gilda. She already has so many direct Luck-based skills in her trees, and skills based on hoarding monster drops, AND she lacks any heals so I'm sorta relying on Angel/Demon/Feral Souls dropping to recover it a bit.

Edit: btw, Gilda can totally bypass the platforming part of the ice boss fight because of her innate double-jump. It further trivializes the already easy fight, not to mention her incredible airtime with air comboes

Anyway, new update, mainly addressing the bugs introduced by the content patch
Product Update v1.0.0.24
EF Admin

This is a small patch to fix some of the issues introduced in .23. There will be ongoing updates in the coming weeks to hunt down all the bugs. We will announce when the next estimated time for an update will be. This update contains the following...

Hotfix- for Gilda's servant crash.
Hotfix- for lower skyway and angel key room bugs.

v1.0.0.24
Fixed

sign of no return (you can pass it safely... I hope)
plan B finisher
mausoleum trap as Vladyn
sewer trap as Gilda
Crash with save in the 16th slot
Crusader amulet mana steal protection
Gilda unable to climb with 'UP' key (still in progress post if still an issue)
various crashes involving player minions
Vladyn shot skills that trigger on hit.
glitch with void version of Vladyn's Focus Finisher.
Silence now properly affects Gernot

Changed

various adjustments to address slowdown/crashes on room transitions (ongoing)
increased damage on switchblade
reduced attack speed of Chakram
[Hard Shells] to increase shot crit damage by 1.5% per Agi.

Note* Reaper Relic is currently mislabeled. It does not have -40% magic.
Note* Windows version is up Mac will take another couple hours to put up. Will amend this post when its up...

There are other various small issues that were fixed/changed with help from your feedback on the forums. While we don't get to answer all post we do try to read all of them, so thank you all for the feedback.

I felt kind of forced into Int because of her skill that adds 1/4 of your Int to all your other stats, though early on I put some points into Luck for her hoarding skills (respecced later). That skill also applies before Jester's Watch. She heals from the leech skill in the same tree. S-ranking all the bosses on Godslayer wasn't all that difficult with that setup, except for Eye of Myrgato. IIRC I topped out around 180 Mag putting all my points into Int and 150 putting all my points into Luck, with Jester's Watch equipped.

Vladyn seems a lot more flexible between Agi and Luck, although presumably Luck explodes as you keep going because of his Ancient Coin skill. I don't know if his minions scale with Int, but they're pretty strong too.

S-ranking Myrgato consistently is tough on any build :p

I gotta give major props to Endless Fluff for remaking a lot of the early enemies and tweaking a lot of the old areas. For one, saving in Guardian Temple doesn't cause you to get stuck there until you beat the boss, you seem to be able to walljump back out

The remade demon ranged units have caused Abandoned Gardens and Guardian Temple to become much tougher than before, which I think is not the best direction to take since they are already tough enough pre-patch. I think they could have tweaked the enemy placements to make them a little less clever and effective.

2 flamethrower demons next to each other is a bit much because they're basically guarding each other with high damage multi-hit attacks that cause burn affliction

Oh sweet! It took forever but it finally happened. Glad the devs stuck by this despite the burnout. Hope they can move on to new projects now, I've liked all the games they've made.

Say, how does Teachings of the Lifeblade work now? I remember annihilating everything with my full AGI near-infinite Focus mode Reina build.
