Not open for further replies.
Just watch Sensuki's videos on his YouTube channel tomorrow. He will be making quality non-spoiler videos like on how to play the game and such so as to get as many people interested and comfortable with the game systems before launch.

That was the plan. I'm already planning on avoiding everywhere but GAF until Thursday, just in case.

Right I've got THREE copies of Pillars of Eternity to give away to GAF for the low low pirce of: £13.83! PM me for (paypal) details!

Paid:
  • Reneledarker
  • Tovarisc
  • Vaga

Edit: All gone sorry! Might do another tomorrow.

For those choosing the Steam version, good news from Kaz!

http://forums.obsidian.net/topic/71420-steam-achievements/?p=1590869

Kaz: Our resident programmer Roby pushed to get all the steam related assets done before release. We support the following:

  • Achievements
  • Badges
  • Cards
  • Emoticons (be sure to collect both "eyes")
  • Profile Background

Also, important message from Brandon Adler concerning the embargo/streaming:

http://forums.obsidian.net/topic/71...rch-23rd-backers-wait-for-the-26th/?p=1590662

Brandon Adler: Since many are asking:

  • The embargo for streaming the game is up on March 23rd. I don't remember the specific time, but I think it is 6 AM PDT.
  • The embargo for reviews and critiques is up when the game launches. This is so all press have a chance to write up and release their reviews at the same time.
  • The press are getting press versions of the game. These are not final versions, but they are pretty close. Whether or not you feel that press reviews and Twitch/YouTube streams are important, they are. They will make an enormous difference in the reception of the game. We are hoping that official press and good word of mouth from our backers will create the best launch we could possibly have. This will ensure that we are able to make sequels and more expansions for everyone.
  • I understand that some of the backers may be upset that others get to review the game before you get to play, but it is necessary if we want day one reviews to be live. If we opened up the review build to backers the majority of the game would be leaked before launch day and the press would (rightfully) break their embargos so that their reviews are relevant.
  • Also, the backers are going to be getting a day one patch that has many additional fixes that the review build isn't getting. The biggest change is to the Enchanting UI. Trust me when I say you will want some of these fixes/changes for your full playthrough.

One again, I apologize to any backers that feel slighted. That is not our intention. Our intention is to have the best launch possible. We (Obsidian and backers) have spent over two years on this journey together and we can't thank you enough. We just ask that you understand what we are doing is for maximum exposure and the good of the game.

Thanks.

I can't fault them for this. Double Fine allowed backers to play Act 1 of Broken Age early and asked backers to not write about the game prior to official release. Predictably, backers did since they weren't under NDA which lead to reviewers breaking embargo so they wouldn't lose out on potential views. So they had all this talk and hype around the game, but non-backers couldn't buy it until a week later which could have cost them sales. Obsidian probably doesn't want to be in a similar situation.

This anger over not being able to play PoE early is silly. We already get perks non-backers don't get and they never promised early access.

Guys I've followed this game close enough and am really interested except for one problem, I hate classic isometric RPG combat. It's why I've found it nigh impossible to complete playthroughs of the Baldur's Gates game and Planescape. So tell me is the combat system in the game just like those classic games or something better say like Dragon Age Origins?

What exactly do hate about the combat in the BG series? Im sure PoE is more similar to BG than DA.

Well you answered your own question. It's an isometric cRPG like Baldur's Gate and Planescape Torment.

Not sure how you didn't learn that this game has isometric combat if you supposedly followed it closely.

You won't be happy if that's the way you feel.

This post makes my head hurt a bit.

But to answer your question, the only things I can see significantly distinguishing DA:O combat from IE combat are the UI, the number of characters you control, and the level of difficulty at equivalent settings. The UI in this game is a lot more modern and useable than in the IE games, with e.g. AoE targeting indicators, but you control a party of 6 (as in the IE games), and from all reports the difficulty is also closer to IE than DA:O (at corresponding settings).

Definitely much more akin to the former, at least from what I've seen and very limited exposure to the beta.

Somehow I entirely forgot which version of this game I backed. Logged into the site, clicked around a bit and found out I got a pretty big one for $140. Nice! And apparently it includes a t-shirt and some other physical products. No idea how I forgot all that.

It doesn't exactly play like either, even if it uses a real time with pause combat system. You will need to manage your characters a lot.

Jelly. I've only got the royal edition as it's all I could afford at the time. :(

Damn, excuse me if I thought that a game from 2009 had better gameplay and mechanics than a game from 2000. Well, it seems you have all answered my question in some fashion so I'll just see myself out.

Your problem is that you're stating an opinion as if it's fact.

Yeah, bit obnoxious that. If you've followed it closely and understand it's a spiritual successor to these type of games, it shouldn't be a surprise it's following a similar formula combat wise. I'll go ahead and do it myself though, BGII combat>any combat system Bioware has done since.

not better, just different
apples and oranges, different strokes for different folks

Also, does anyone know who Pallegina's voice actress is?

Nah y'all were kinda rude to him.

The game is less mobile than the ie games because of engagement that's for sure. I think scouting and pre combat setup and positioning is gonna be important. I really like how every class has something active to do so that is a bit more modern.

I think the combat is similar enough to DA:O except some different mechanics and you can control more characters in the party. The problem is, he categorized isometric view as part of the combat. We can actually play DA:O in isometric view if we zoom out the camera view.

The best item description in the Infinity Engine games was written by Josh Sawyer for Icewind Dale. It was for a super-powerful paladin longsword called Pale Justice.

Here's the description:

The best part?
You find the blade on a corpse in a well-hidden room, but it uses the graphic for a totally normal, non-magical longsword. The only way you'll know it's this insanely powerful magical item is if you bother mousing over the item and reading the tooltip.

Needless to say, I'm excited for what Sawyer has come up with for PoE.

I think MCA gets most of the praise/attention as a writer amongst the Obisidian crew, but Sawyer is no slouch at writing either.

Dragon Age Origins has similar combat to those old games, and to this one. What exactly did you not like about the older games that you did like baout DA:O?

Well, thinking bakc on it, in DA:O you could play the game from one character's perspective without needing to go into tactical mode much, except on harder difficulties.

This game is basiclaly tactical mode all the time.

I can't believe how close we are now.

I hope this is the real Second Renaissance of PC RPGs, and not just a sad wave goodbye for all the fans. In which I mean, I look forward to great word of mouth and sequels and what else.

There's also that average looking Sword Coast Legends thing. But it does show we're starting to see those types of games coming out of no where, which is good.
And Serpent in the Staglands should also count I think.

Durante, are you able to point me in the direction of your post where you discussed how to get this running at higher res than your display supports? I can't seem to find it.

I have a new 970 running on a 1080p monitor, and I notice that in some games now I can see an extra higher resolution (1.5x?). Do I just need to select this in the game? Or is there some other fancy wizardry that enables even higher rendering resolutions?

Pardon the ignorance btw, I've just come from AMD and I've never thought about this sort of stuff before.

You need to enable DSR from the Nvidia control panel.

e: or that's the basic gist of it, i dunno if you need to jump through some extra hoops for poe

Do we know if this is going to get a midnight release or standard steam store update time? Currently seems to be standard but a lot of games tend to not update it until closer.
