Gunna record a short video of me trying to do the Meredith fight on Path of the Damned with my "Khal Drogo" Barbarian...wish me luck

I'm too lzy to post this to their forums (I can't remember my login info), but one minor gripe I have is in the dialogue box when you're clicking through convos, whenever you select your dialogue choice the next part of the convo just instantly appears. I liked the way it was in BG2 where your dialogue choice popped in the window and it then scrolled down across the next part of the conversation. Made it feel more organic and it helps prevent me from losing the mouse cursor position and mis-clicking a dialogue option.

Your combat log has a toggle on it to switch to saved conversations allowing you to scroll :)

The new portraits look lovely

The best thing Avellone ever did was cut elves from Planescape.
But what will we hate if there is no elves?

Looking forward to it.
I beat the Medreth fight on Path of the Damned difficulty with no one getting knocked down. My Khal Drogo 2-H Coastal Aumau Barb almost fell but I pulled through. I recorded it however my internet died and I'm posting this on LTE. The video will only be up tomorrow folks sorry!

Couple things to note for this fight was that I didn't recruit the an extra 6th adventurer, so I was only working with 5-man party. I used all the given equipment. Didn't buy any weapons or armor. I did enchant a sword. I effectively used a trap. Very micro-managey and pausing but its fine for me because it makes you think and puts you on your toes!

I gotta follow this. Looking at that gameplay video, its so great that someone is actually trying to make a new 2D CRPG in this day and age.

At least the graphics look 2Dish.

The background environments are built in 3d, then rendered in 2d, and finally painted over for extra detail - the same process used for the infinity engine games.

Pretty settled on a pale elf female rogue drifter as my PC, but we'll see what happens when I see all the final portraits.

I swear, portraits determine my character creation more than anything else in these games.

Yeah, a kind of OCD driven disconnect happens when the portrait doesn't resemble the actual character.

Looks like this game has a good range of portraits, at least.

Wasteland 2 really disappointed me in that regard. And then it was impossible to get the in-game models to look like the portraits.

And I hate using customs, because the art style ends up looking incoherent.

Hah, that bothered me more than any other graphics related feature people were complaining about. I though the game looked just fine given the budget and everything. The characters and their portraits though ... yeah. One of the many things W3 should address.

These are apparently the new additions to the potraits in the BB, with still a few more portraits that will be added in the final game release.

Here's a slightly outdate grouping of what was in there, some of these were apparently retouched in the latest build and I think a few other portraits were added, but I can't find a good source for them.

If someone with the BB wouldn't mind uploading all of them to an Imgur album that would be really great.

Personally I still really like the IWD2 portraits that someone resized/cropped for PoE. I like have a fully body shot in the character screen with then just the headshot for the GUI.

eh, I like non-human characters but somehow I don't really dig the look of the Orlans and Aumaua

pretty sure that I'll go with this portrait

I suspect this fella here will be really popular

Three Aumaua portraits... welp.

At least the best one is there, still.

I still find it distracting how there's two distinct styles of portrait, traced and original, or whatever. Aleast when they're side-by-side like this.

I was wondering if those two (maybe three with the male nature godlike) realistic portraits in the second pic are backer portraits
e: yep

I think/hope that's what the touchups are for. Almost all the new portraits share a similar style and level of fine detail, unlike the original 31 portraits where the style varies a great deal with at least 2, if not 3 distinct styles to the portraits. Hopefully the touchups went through and evened them out to all look similar, especially with the hair where some are super realistic and others completely cartoony.

Oh, that's a good observation. I couldn't nail down why some of them looked off, but that's totally it.

The gold-and-blue male aumaua is perfect, they better not touch him. And he's a backer portrait, so thank you to whichever crazy backer had it made... 'cuz it's the best.

I removed the ones that aren't in the beta anymore (rip freckled elf) and replaced the old portraits with the new ones. Only a few were retouched.

Here are all the portraits. http://imgur.com/a/nqxJW#0

Awesome, thanks so much.

These are personal favorites, don't know if I'll actually use any of them in the game though.

If any I'll go with the redhead since I really like the look of the Savannah Humans ingame model with red-ish hair, though their a bit darker skinned. Don't care for the female Orlan options though and I was thinking of going that way as well, but might play as a dude if I decide on them instead of human.

None of the portraits say "Pompous female noble" to me. I might have to go searching online for a custom picture.

What dimensions should I resize an image down to in order to be suitable for a character portrait?

Each portrait is 210 x 330 pixels. The smaller in game UI portraits are 76 x 96 pixels.

File Path will be something like this:
steam/steamapps/common/Pillars of Eternity - Public Beta/PillarsofEternity_Data/data/art/gui/portraits/player/(female or male)/

Great selection of portraits!

Has there been any video showing how in-depth character appearance customization is? I don't want another Wasteland 2 siutation.

It's not super detailed, but to be fair, you're not going to see your character that closely. The fixed camera perspective that's fairly zoomed out prevents it. It's not like D:OS where you can zoom the camera way in.

These ones are clearly the best:

Lots of the backer beta videos cover character creation.

It's not super in depth. You have race, you have a selection of heads, a selection of hair, primary and secondary color selection and your starting equipment. It'll be equipment that mostly sets you apart.

The bottom two are my favorites out of the new women. I'm considering changing to one of those. I love the Barbarian human male but that will be something for a second playthrough.

Ok, thanks. So long as the stuff available is vaguely similar it'll be OK.

Wasteland 2 was too specific; there were some portraits that matched up close to what was available, and others that had zero correlation. Left a lot of the appearance stuff out in the cold.

From all the vids I've seen it's a thousand times better than Wasteland 2, if not for the fact that the character models don't like like half melted thrown out dolls. Selection doesn't look too great, but it doesn't seem too limited.

Hahaha, that's a perfect description of the Wasteland 2 models. I can totally see it.

Despite my excitement still think I'm gonna wait a bit before starting to play. I doubt it will be buggy beyond belief or anything but I get the feeling they gonna work out a lot of kinks after the game drops.

As long as the game is playable start to finish I'll be happy. If a few sidequests are broken, maybe some niggling performance issues and the like I can deal with that. There is always playing the game over again from the start when the expansion comes out to re-experience it with all the bug fixes and improvements they'll put out in between.

Speaking of portraits, as someone else mentioned Wasteland 2, I REALLY REALLY hope the characters you can actually "make" look anything like the portraits.

Why do they not either make the portraits based on what the character creation can make, or make the character creation have the options that the portraits have?

I mean it seems like a logical and reasonable thing to do, whichever comes first just have the other one take it into account during development.

I absolutely HATED how none of the characters that I could make in Wasteland looked absolutely nothing like the portraits I had to pick from.

Hey all, with now 13 days left until Pillars of Eternity launches, we have two new screenshots for you! Enjoy the awesomeness of the Engwithan empire!

Little is known about the long-lost Engwithan empire or its culture. Called the "Builders" by the tribes of Eir Glanfath, the Engwithans are believed to have created strange, elaborate structures over decades using shaped pillars of living adra to support the stone. Their language is barely understood by even the most well-read scholars, leaving many details of their society lost to the ages and hopelessly mired in rumor, folklore, and blatant lies.

Hey does anyone know where I can find videos of just spell effects? I can't find any one that's just dedicated to that. Also I'm wondering what the correct pronunciation for words like Aumaua, Sceltrfolc, and Aedyr. Feel pretty dumb asking but I'd rather get it right.

ah-mao-uh

A-deer

not sure about the last one....Cel-trolfic?/Cel-trolf?

Engwithan = eng-with-un

Dyrwood = deer wood (literally as well)

How many character(s) do you get to select and change the portrait of? Are there voice options or do males and females have a default set of voices for actions? Also, do you have to write a biography of sort for your character(s) like in Wasteland 2?
