Hold your horses, read this interview if you haven't.

That’s what I thought the purpose behind his caricaturized face was at first,
but then with the start of the murder story, I realized something: his unrealistic face is what allows us to observe his words and actions head-on, without looking away
.

This is really good right here. Great interview from Asano, thanks for the link Uso.

Edit:

Everyone, quick, I need a happy manga that involves fighting and romance in which the character levels up! Its the only thing that'll work on me!

That look of absolute despair.

No wonder he wants to die.

So Yui is a G cup?

That'll be good to know.

For future references, of course.

Bokurano
Himizu
Kokou no Hito

But more seriously, perhaps All Rounder Meguru?

Wow, you really want me to fall into depression don't you Uso? Its all apart of your devious plan... I've read All Rounder Meguru, pretty good. I can't believe I've almost run the well dry on manga that I love so much.

Punpun 134

I am now actually legitimately really angry and quite upset right now.

Because it seems like the entire world (or the mangaka) seems so hell-bent in creating such an awful life for Punpun to experience in every single second of his life.

I mean, I know Going for Bad to Worse is a pretty popular trope in fictional work, but this manga is DRIPPING on it in every 5 seconds.... ugh.............................

Finish the fight soldier, then read the interview Uso posted, which I replied to on the top of this page. It's a hell of a ride.

Should I be hopeful to see my name in your will?

Your criteria is actually very hard to be fulfilled unless you don't mind reading battle shounen stuff.

I've probably read all the battle shounen there is except for Toriko. Hanza Sky is the only one that truly brings me joy since its exactly what I want.

Punpun 139 page 4

FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK

they both were each other's idols. Pun Pun his entire adulthood held her as the epitome of his desires. And Aiko, upon finally finding Pun Pun immediately saw him as her savior. her knight in shining armor. An anchor to which she could latch onto to get her out of her miserable life. When they finally meet, they both lie and put on an appearance which only serves to solidify each other's erroneous views of one another. but as they peeled back the layers, they discover the truth. Both are broken. And both trying to rely on a broken person.

They looked to each other to save themselves, but what they expected to be a superhero was a normal, unhinged human shackled by their environment. it was a bad case of the blind leading the blind, where every roadblock they met only further augmented their worsening situation.

In the end, Aiko realized that they were always going to be on the run. they were both each other's shackles to a bad life. So, in an effort to break the cycle and to remove the shackle she has become on the one person she loves the most, she committed suicide. It was the only way she saw to save Pun Pun.

...and now I suddenly feel like I need to re-evaluate everything I thought of Aiko. Wow.

I think Angel Densetsu and Sumomomo are the only ones that fit your requirements the most. Mostly because they are comedy focused and as a result light-hearted in tone.

nijigahara holograph > solanin (including the ctrl+t spinoff epilogue) > punpun > before dawn and the end of the world > city of lights > what a wonderful world > girl by the sea

dead dead demons could be asanos masterpiece amongst masterpieces but it's still ongoing so *shrugs*

Punpun END

I will.... thanks.

That's the thing, comedy murders them. I almost liked Sumomomo cause I thought the MC would eventually go eye of the tiger and level up but I eventually got tired of waiting and Angel Densetsu is just a gag manga so I read it whenever I want to laugh a bit. I definitely want to mock up a story that I've had churning for a while...

I should finish punpun.
You should!
Punpun END

I will.... thanks.
We broke you.
I look forward to when people still quote that tumblr post even when the English game is out.

Yeah, it's definitely going to happen. Unfortunate since I think the game's so fun. Alisha's probably my favorite design as of recent Tales, but whatever. Game's got my interest more than the Xillias.

Nijigahara Holograph was one of the biggest mindfuck reads I've had in all my years reading manga both in a good way and a "what is life" kind of way.

I feel like everyone I know who's read the manga has been like "I can relate to Punpun" and I think that's a testament to what a good character he is. Yet i also hear a lot of broad philosophical lessons from Punpun, which is fine but I was always more a fan of close character analysis, so here's a little bit of what I think of Punpun's character(and that confusing bird metaphor).
I'm always amazed at how fucked up Punpun seems to become after being raped at an early age by what's her face. Because i think about that moment, and I think about all the times Punpun has consequently thought of rape. It's always as a sort of 'take' because he is miserable and lonely he has some sort of justification for it in his head. He never does it, but he does think about it. Of course this is a direct result of someone using Punpun at an early age because they were lonely and miserable. This is also around the time I think the bird metaphor starts to change, as Punpun's visual style also starts to differ up. To me the bird is a changing and evolving metaphor, starting out as childlike innocence and warping from that as we see Punpun's character change while retaining that bird like image. Punpun begins with a very innocent outlook of the world and his own terrible situation, and as the story progresses the idea of his own 'innocence' becomes tougher to justify. In his teens, as he thinks about raping that girl on the date(because the only real interaction he's had with a girl sexually has been rape) the image of the bird becomes awkward in the reader's head. The bird image is supposed to make you a little uncomfortable after this point, and the consequent changes like wise. When it suddenly changes to a cube, and the little to no emotions or movements Punpun displays become a worrying as both others and the reader don't know what is happening or what he is thinking. As it becomes black and sinister, you know he's gone off the deepened, yet it still retains that birdshape; that now warped sense of 'innocence' as we see how the cute bird has grown up. At the end when we last see him technically presented as a stranger, only recognized really by his bird like form. The last moment is in such an interesting contrast, because he is seen by a childhood friend, someone at that initial point of the bird, yet they cannot recognize him, as a now adult Punpun is surrounded by new friends; creating a final contrast of where we started and where we ended, and how much this one child has changed into his adult hood.

Sorry if none of this makes sense, I tend to ramble and was never good at making my arguments stick to one conscience point.

they both were each other's idols. Pun Pun his entire adulthood held her as the epitome of his desires. And Aiko, upon finally finding Pun Pun immediately saw him as her savior. her knight in shining armor. An anchor to which she could latch onto to get her out of her miserable life. Both are broken. And both trying to rely on a broken person.

That's some really good analysis, and this is why I LOVE Oyasumi Punpun. There is so much here that you can have some really deep discussions and literary levels of analysis. I graduated with a bachelor in English, and I've always loved analyzing works but rarely do I find manga or games that really have enough there to warrant deep thoughts.

That quote from A Girl by the Sea > any single line Asano has ever written.

I really like the interview, because it really shows Asano when he was writing earlier works.

He very much always wanted to tell someone something with his work and thought escapist/fun stories were either a waste of time or below other works. But I think he realize from the reaction to Punpun got with its dips and from his fellow authors that it was a super silly way of looking at things.

You can tell that by Dededede (I actually really like that series) and how he took out the time for the characters just too goof off and have fun. You can look into each event having meaning, but not all of them do.

I Am Alice Vol.02

This is basically now your typical otome adaptation. Whole volume was pretty much solve the problem of each pretty boy, have them all in love with the not really a girl and move on until we face the final boss. Who I hope falls in love with the not really a girl too cause why not.

My Girl 1-15 - am liking it, but it does feel a little same old. But I like dad manga and have thus read quite a bit of it, and watched quite a bit of anime in the same sub genre.

Yuusha ga Shinda! Murabito no Ore ga Hotta Otoshiana ni Yuusha ga Ochita Kekka. 01-07

Villager (accidentally) kills hero. Gets soul forcefully placed into dead hero's dead body by necromancer. Now he's off the save the world probably with childhood friend and necromancer.

Amusing. Some kinds of amusing.

I kinda feel guilty for Yams' and Banana's suffering.

Nice to see the different interpretations everyone has of Punpun, and yeah, don't forget to read the interview after you've finished the series!

CTRL+T is a Solanin epilogue? Dang, I didn't know that. Gonna read it as soon as I can.

...staying away from Punpun.

You don't want to join in the fun?

I lean more towards RockTurtle's interpretation. Especially the part where Akio
commit suicide for Punpun instead of her guilt.

Hold your horses, read this interview if you haven't.

Huh, will read this tomorrow when I get the chance.

The best (or worst) part of Punpun was that I could relate to him at some points. It made the "no turning back" parts even harder to read.

Never understood the "Good Vibrations" parts of the manga though, so I might have to go reread those or read some of the comments people on here have made about it.

I should finish Solanin someday. I only bought the first volume a while ago.
I'm a sucker for stories about musicians so I dunno why I'm waiting to finish it.

It's an art book but it has a loosely connected "story" included.

Thanks. As long as some of the characters make an appearance I'm good.

Never understood the "Good Vibrations" parts of the manga though, so I might have to go reread those or read some of the comments people on here have made about it.

The interview might give some answers about the parts concerning Pegasus.

Oh god, I should not have read Oyasumi Punpun to the end in such a short time. I don't even remember when I started, was it yesterday? Was it today? It was just a beautiful train wreck that I cannot avert my eyes from. And now I'm left with a mixture of sadness, a little bit of tears, maybe even feeling nauseous, and I feel like I need of a hug.

I must say curiosity has certainly tried to kill me today.

Taiyou no Ie 50 (End)

Well, that's over with. Dragged on a bit at parts, but it was overall alright. Looks like there's going to be some extra epilogue chapters, so I hope Daiki gets a happy ending.

I wonder whether to read or stay away from punpun...

What is appeal?

I should pick up Citrus at my local store if they stock it.

Literature in a manga medium, I suppose. It's really good. A story that can change you, and one that you can analyze. I recommend checking it out. There might be sad parts in it, but this isn't one of those stories with the appeal to just make the reader's sad or suffer. Everything sad in there has a purpose.
