There was a remake in development 7-8 years back, with Gerard Butler attached, but it never came about. I don't think Carpenter was involved with that.

Fox has emerged from competitive bidding and closed a deal to remake the 1981 John Carptenter-directed cult classic Escape From New York. Andrew Rona and Alex Heineman’s The Picture Company will produce.

Carpenter will be an executive producer and will exert creative influence over the project. Fox’s Mike Ireland brought it in and will steer. The hope is to reinvent the property with an eye toward launching a new franchise.

It's gonna be hard to replace Kurt.

Who could do it? Any ideas? He was essentially channeling Clint Eastwood.

Sure, if they do it in the vain of Mad Max: Fury Road and keep it in continuation (and poke fun of Escape From LA) this could be rad.

Why bother? The original is a classic.

This 'fresh new approach' will end up like all the other remakes of cult classic 80's movies and be some straight-faced, generic, CGI filled, slick action movie instead of the gritty, camp, weirdness of the original. So again, why bother?

Has there been a good John Carpenter reboot/remake?

The Fog? Bleh

Assault on Precinct 13? Bleh.

The Thing? Bleh.

Halloween? Okay, I guess.

The Escape universe is way too awesome to just do one awesome film and a batshit crazy sequel.

Even if it ends up sucking, its not like it'd change anything. Your copy of Escape from New York will still work.

He never "exerted creative control" over those projects.

Dude is old but he knows what cooks in a pulpy and grimy action film.

Because Wal Mart has space in their Blu Ray dumpsters alongside all the unsold copies of Total Recall and Robocop reboots.

But surely they'll get it right this time!

Damnit Fox, can't ya just keep the existing universe, and make the third one Escape from Florida or something? You can't replace the brilliant combination of Kurt Russell and ham, it just can't be done.

The only good thing about most remakes is that they slide into obscurity a couple of weeks after their theatrical release.

EFNY has aged gracefully and it's still watchable and entertaining. Carpenter or no Carpenter, a remake is redundant.

Assault remake I liked a lot. I liked The Thing too. The other two, no.

Bale would be cool but....

When Carpenter cast Russell, it was a risky move because Russell was known as a Disney kid. But that chance paid off. So, is there anyone that fits that Bill today? Risky casting choice that could pull it off?

Maybe Dan Stevens, especially after The Guest.

Logan Lerman?

Wait... Get Ben Foster! I love that dude!

*peers at footage* "Uh, yeah, that looks great. You're still paying me in cash, right?"

As long as they replicate the performance of that guy who tried to bash through the door inside Air Force One, I'm good.

I nominate Frank Grillo

Dude could bulk up a bit, but he's been pretty badass in the movies I've seen with him in them (Captain America 2 and The Purge:Anarchy)

Carpenter will probably not be lifting a finger on this project, like many of his other remakes. He's only there to get paid for having his name on it.

And that wasn't meant to sound flip; the dude has gone on record saying that he only does this stuff to get paid, which I can respect, especially because all of his best movies were flops when they were first released. Dude deserves cash money greatness.

Carpenter has always been involved with the Escape from New York remake. He has final say over how Snake is portrayed. He had it written into the first remake deal that Snake must be a bad ass. Not figuratively written, but literally written in those exact words. Snake Plissken must be a bad ass. If Snake isn't bad ass enough for Carpenter, he's more than happy to have the script reworked. It's probably the most involved in any of the remakes he's gotten.
