STEAM | December II 2014 - A thread for people who don't like sale side posters.

Is ModBot using Enhanced Steam to pull prices? Cause it shows up as part of a $1 bundle so that's probably why the turd icon shows up.

The turd list is not based on price, it's based on reception, but it was a bug stemming from the fact that I added some recent stuff like "Uriel's Chasm" and accidentally added a blank filter that included all games. I fixed it by removing the filter.

Wait wait.
Dare I ask what you think of Hateful BF?
It's some nice silly fun I had gotten it before the "HD" remake a year or two ago.

I really thought the sale wasnt really that good for me. Most games I wanted where not discounted that much, since they were pretty new and no russian prices anymore.

So I got Amazing Princess Sarah, Dreadout and Ground Zeroes from Nuuvem.

Well Dreadout there is pretty good! And the second act is coming out soon as well (free update) so you can get through the whole story.

I'm a guy who picks up most bundles (the ones with games i don't already own of course) and I think that I never spent more than 50$ in a month in them. And even 50$ is really in the high-end of things, I would say the average I spend is 30$. Though to be fair I rarely do BTAs.

oh, that explains it, I used to do BTAs for one game constantly and still sometimes do, even if I learnt to skip some, finally

Random question: unless my math is wrong, is Bound by Flame sitting at around $10 on Nuuvem? If so, sold!

Edit: Never mind, region locked :(

I'd appreciate it, I can give you back a Steam game worth $10 or so =X

So I just bought a bundle on Steam and it kept telling me that I will NOT receive extra copies of games already in my library, but the opposite happened. I guess this is normal behavior but it's weird why it keep telling you otherwise.

usually you don't receive extra copies, there are some exceptions but not many. I still think that's worst thing steam does, not providing extra copies for games we own, I mean. So much waste.

It's so easy to see who finished this game and who didn't.
There is some silly fun to be had, but tbh that's small part of a game, like 1/5th maybe

Yeah I don't really mention the other parts since I like for people to be surprised. (I still find it to be primarily silly though.)

It's because in general, you won't get extra copies. Usually only Valve games give extra copies, the devs have to elect to give extra copies specifically. You can check to see if you'll get extra copies through steamdb. For example, the bit trip collection 2014: Link.

Note the following:

OnPurchaseGrantGuestPassPackage1 Bit.Trip Runner (15117)
OnPurchaseGrantGuestPassPackage2 Bit.Trip.Runner 2 Giftable (31545)
OnPurchaseGrantGuestPassPackage3 BIT.TRIP.BEAT (12348)
OnPurchaseGrantGuestPassPackage4 BIT.TRIP.CORE + Soundtrack Giftable (31548)
OnPurchaseGrantGuestPassPackage5 Bit.Trip.Void with Soundtrack Giftable (31549)
OnPurchaseGrantGuestPassPackage6 BIT.TRIP FATE with Soundtrack Giftable (31550)

The presence of OnPurchaseGrantGuessPackage usually indicates that you'll get gift copies back of games you already own.

I just realized that there was a button to lock on in Revengeance.

I beat MGR without ever realizing this was a thing.

No wonder I only got a C rank at the end.

A lot of people go through the game not realizing there are certain moves or functions. Some people never learn about the dodge move/mechanic even after beating the game twice. It really isn't that good about telling you about certain things.

Wait! before buying any Paradox collection, you should check what it contains, because these are not all dlcs, if it's a collection I think it is. Double and triple check, never ever trust paradox collections, complete editions and alike.

I think it probably assumes to much that the player is familiar with character action games probably since I used most of the available functions out of the gate due to familiarity in some parts.

ModBot now supports marking
faviconuvuwz.png
Telltale Games DRM keys. I would hazard a guess that the only reason why you'd ever give one away is if you accidentally bought one from a third party site thinking you were getting a Steam key. But if you should want to mark it with this icon just add (telltale) (telltale games) or (telltale drm) to your game's name. You must include the parentheses because otherwise there's going to be a confusion between Steam keys that have the word telltale in the name.

You can see the full list of alternate key icons supported by ModBot here:
http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=121851268&postcount=2
PSN, Xbox, eShop, Origin, iOS, Android, uPlay, GOG, Telltale, and Desura are supported.

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.

This is where I was at too. I don't even know how 200€ a month on bundles is even possible.

For you.
oh, that explains it, I used to do BTAs for one game constantly and still sometimes do, even if I learnt to skip some, finally

Yeah, that's a thing I do not do. Many times BTA has many games already own and just 1 or 2 I don't, so I often skip the BTA in that case

Speaking of Telltale, I played through episode one of Tales from the Borderlands today.

Now, I've been increasingly critical of Telltale studios over the past year and a half because I feel the quality of their output has been declining. The episodes they put out are shorter and the delay between episodes feels longer. The writing quality has dipped to the point where they are unable maintain the illusion of choice they offer in their 'branching' paths. And they've relegated actual gameplay to a seemingly insignificant priority in their work. And then of course there's the whole thing about all the bugs that each of their games has that refuse to acknowledge, let alone fix.

So... I was not expecting much from Tales of the Borderlands. Which is why I'm surprised to report that I consider this their best work in recent times. As someone fatigued with Borderlands, I liked that the game only used it as a setting and with a few references to it. The game could have been set anywhere and it would work fine. The episode was long too (easily over 2 hours as compared to 80-90 minutes of some of their recent ones). But I think the single best part about this game is that they have virtually stopped pretending that your choices matter. They still do offer choices, and I suppose it makes some minor alterations to your game, but they never make a big deal out of it where the game pretends that you have to make some difficult moral decision or anything like that. It's a lighthearted game that stays that way.

The gameplay is still QTE heavy with button mashing but it seems varied by all the different situations you find yourself doing something in. The game starts a little slow but about half way through you start coming up on these really fun moments. Those moments add up and by the end you realize that you had a pretty good time with the game. It's a game where the overall story takes a back seat to the individual scenes. It's also loaded with the who's who of voice acting talent (Troy Baker, Laura Bailey etc.).

So yea, I'm surprised that I liked the game but I did. Worth checking out I'd say.

edit - also, looking at my record, I added over 700 games on Steam in 2014. The number came as a shock even though it shouldn't have. Decided I'd try and cut that down significantly this year. And not a day later I've already pre-ordered Life is Strange and have started down that path again.

Just made an account on Gamersgate to get The Cave ($3.25) but it just won't let me sign in. It doesn't say error or anything like that, it simply reloads the same page with no changes when I try. It's like there's some kind of problem with the login script itself.

Anyone ever had a similar problem? Any ideas what to do?

EDIT: Nevermind, suddenly it works, even though I did nothing else. Must have been a problem on their side.

What's the best way to find mods for any given game? Just google the game plus 'mod'? Is there some well established universal repository? I googled it and found a few sites that might be legit, but I was wondering if there was a well vetted one.

The kinds of mods I'm generally looking for are things like the unofficial patch to Age Of Wonders: Shadow Magic that fixes bugs, or the Jagged Alliance Back in Action patch that fixes all the weapons, etc. Basically, usually I'm just interested in the 'unofficial official' patch, not totally transforming a game.

Also, is looking into Steam Workshop worthwhile? Or is it just one more place to look for stuff? Is there a way to easily check your library for games that are part of SW? I tried sorting by 'your playtime' in the steam store but it clearly lists games I don't own before games I do.

For unofficial patches, I'd check pcgamingwiki.com and gog.com.
moddb.com frequently has surprising little gameplay modifications for a huge variety of games.
For big stuff, you've got the nexus sites and Steam Workshop.

There's no centralized website for this stuff, and you'll frequently run into things that were only ever worked on in Russian or Japanese on some obscure forum, depending on what game you're looking at.

Ok, so... do you think Hateful is doing bad things to the VN perception too?
I'm of the mind that Hateful and games in the same vein are going to do more to give the genre a *really* negative connotation/stereotype when compared to the games that feed the fan service stereotype like Sakura Spirit.

I mean... what was it Derrick01 said after buying Ultimate General: Gettysburg when it won the last community vote?

you are using Derrick of all people as an example? (><)
that's funny in its own right maybe a bit too much

also, no, there is no better way to lower perception of all genre than abundance of fanservice. How a good game can do more damage? In which universe.
Also I repeat one more time, this game is not what you think it is, not that you care, I know, you just like to hate it.

There is absolutely zero pigeon sex in Hatoful Boyfriend, it just strings along everyone into thinking there is.

Hatoful Boyfriend is the kind of thing Hideaki Anno would do if he ever wrote a VN.

Not really HB actually brought more people into the audience with it's ridiculous premise and is overall pretty tame so I don't know how it hurt perception at all unless they hate ridiculousness. Sakura Spirit is just sexual fluff with no greater goal to be more than that what you see is what you get and most of the enjoyment you get from the game can probably be plopped into CG batch collection. I don't mind the T&A games existing but I'd prefer to get more of titles that stand on other merits while building a wider audience on Steam.

Also I usually discounted Derrick's opinions besides cursory information for a time about a game since I don't think I've ever seen him post something I agreed with. I mostly just scrolled over his posts after a while till he was banned. "pigeon banging game" there is enough to make me discount his opinion there since it's obvious zero research went into anything in that statement.

I don't mind the changes that much, but I don't exactly like the idea of having to launch Doom 3 to access the games. I'd like the classic games to be shown in my library :)

Still debating this with myself... And Quake is $5 x_x

You wouldn't need to launch Doom 3 to access the games. You would install Doom 3, grab the WAD files from inside the install folder, and use any of the fine 3rd party Doom engines to actually run Doom 1 + 2. Optionally, create entries in Steam for that engine (with different launch settings) as 3rd party games.

It doesn't have Art of War and multiple other DLCs. But like I said, it has everything from the game's initial release through September 2014. That is how it shows up when you activate it on Steam, despite it being listed on Nuuvem as everything until June or July. The stuff that it doesn't have has been released SINCE September.

There is no DLC collection for Europa Universalis IV that is complete through December and contains all available DLC. The price on Nuuvem is fantastic and unlikely to be match for quite some time. At current sale prices on Steam what you get is like $27 worth of DLC for $8.
