Nvidia Launches GTX 980 And GTX 970 "Maxwell" Graphics Cards ($549 & $329)

One disappointing thing about DSR is that it only works as multiples of my monitor's native resolution. I have a 1920x1200 screen (19:10) but it fully supports 1080p and other lower resolutions and sometimes I like to play in 1080p because it's less demanding, but it doesn't seem like I can properly use DSR if I do. The DSR factors are always for native which gives incorrect aspect ratio if I play at 1080p.

Any way around that?
 
Has there been any word on the 8GB version of the 900 series? I heard late November a while back but it looks like it never happened.

It will happen, if at all, after tons of people buy it and can no longer step up. So... 90 - 120 days?

I tend to believe that the rumor of ram shortages are true. With the PS4 selling so well, the existing manufacturing capacity has to be stretched and while the cards are selling so well, it would be strange to bottleneck the manufacturing process further on ram availability. OR maybe that was a bunch of bullshit and they hit the shelves in a month, who knows?
 
Probably going to wait for the GTX 960 instead.

Canadian e-tailers/retailers are price-gouging the heck out of the GTX 970.

It's anywhere between $410 to $450.

When I compared the G1 Gaming's price a month or so ago it only ended up being like a $15 premium for the Canadian model. The dollar has been pretty shitty lately (or at least was a month ago).

Still a lot better than it costs here (Jordan), the equivalent of 450 to 510 US dollar.

You just gotta accept the fact that Canada is not 'merika.

GTX 970 prices are shit just about everywhere, even America. Right now, the EVGA GTX 970 FTW is the only EVGA 970 below $400 on Amazon, without shipping. That's how bad the prices are for these cards right now.

Holy shit. I was sort of expecting that to happen which is why I was impatient to get my hands on one. Our market has a lag period behind the US, so this price hike will probably ripple here after a while and they could become even more expensive than they are now. Cause I basically bought mine at local "MSRP".

Still surprised the 960 hasn't launched yet though.

I think Nvidia loves these sales numbers, but hates the amount of gaps in supply. I think they might be pushing back the launch of the 960 to build up a consistent supply so that there's less problems with availability and price gouging.

There is at least one GAFer who has it. He posted a lot in this thread in the past. He initially wasn't very happy with it but after a bios mod and overclock he said he's happy.

I've read reports of it throttling even on stock clocks for some people.

It seems to be less desirable/in demand, which might affect its resale price or tradeability in the future

The vanilla Zotac 970 is not a bad card. It's appropriately priced with the competition. You get what you pay for. So it's not a bad value, just depends on what you want and what you're willing to pay or wait for. At the end of the day the differences between the different 970 editions will be minor compared to the jump from your current card to any of them.
 
I didn't know the pricing situation was so bad even in America.

Also, I had very briefly considered the Zotac because it was $365 CAD (in stock, too!).

But I've been having trouble finding reviews, and what few reviews I do come across have been warning about very high temps (80*C).
 
Yeah it was also the cheapest and longest in stock here too. Nobody seemed to want to touch it. That one card did eventually get sold though at this one retailer I was watching. Although same can be said about the lower tier Gigabyte and EVGA ones, those are lingering in stock too. While the "gaming" tier cards fly off the shelf instantly.

I've read some reviews and they are mostly good, sadly with the crappy Canadian dollar exchange rate, jumping to a EVGA or MSI equivalent puts me almost at 500$ mark, plus these brands are out of stock everywhere here in Canada.

I don't think the situation is going to improve any time soon for us Canadians, and since my vidcard is so ancient this Zotac is going to feel like a massive step up.

I've been going by the Amazon and newegg reviews, something that scares me about this Zotac is this "Coil Whine" many users have reported.

It was $329.99 on Newegg when I was ready to buy last week. My only other options were to pick up the MSI for $369.99 locally (higher than normal, but not a ton) or pay scalper prices for any other card.
Went with MSI. So glad. Not only does my card have absolutely zero coil whine under any conditions or frame rate, it's just quiet in general. Lots of overclock range, too. Oh, and it looks great.

Microcenter is selling the cards at a reasonable price. 349.99 for the EVGA superclocked and 339.99 for the MSI OC. I scored an open box MSI 970 OC from them for 288.96!

My little vanilla Zotac 970 came from the Black Friday deal at SabrePC I posted awhile back. $298 for this little card is a steal but it definitely runs hotter than other bigger cards with bigger and better coolers though. It's literally half the length of my MSI GTX 680 Lightning and it looks hilariously tiny and out of place in my huge case. If you're seriously going to OC a GTX 970 hard, this little guy might not be the one for you.

Yup, the Zotac 970s use the same basic PCB design as the reference GTX 670/760s. They are tiny.

He's a little guy but he's got a big heart. After looping Heaven for 2 hours I think he's ready for real games. He sure does get real hot though.

From what I've read, it's a high framerate thing. I guess you could try locking problematic games to 60fps?

Might just need to exchange it.

You could try to reduce the wattage (power limit). Sometimes this seems to help. But this effectivly downclocks your gpu.
