Grand Theft Auto 5 now UK's best-selling game ever

Far Cry 4 is series' biggest launch, Sonic Boom flops.

Grand Theft Auto 5 is now the best-selling game of all time in the UK.
Rockstar's open world was already close to the previous record holder, 2010's Call of Duty: Black Ops, which it finally overtook this week thanks to the arrival of its PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions.

GTA5 already held the record for the highest-grossing UK game in a week (£94m upon its original launch last year) and of all time.
Unsurprisingly, it's also the UK's new all-format chart number one.

Far Cry 4 also performed well: it outsold any previous Far Cry game during its launch week, although was the first to be given an earlier launch on a Tuesday, rather than the traditional Friday.

Sales of BioWare's role-player were on par with 2011's Dragon Age 2, but it's worth remembering that UK numbers company Chart-Track doesn't count digital sales, of which PC copies through Origin will make up a decent amount.
But other titles fared less well - Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric for Wii U and Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal for 3DS failed to appear in the top 40 at all.
Ubisoft's Shape Up, an Xbox One exclusive that requires Kinect, also failed to chart.

Good.

Do we have the Black Ops numbers?

Both around 4M. From last week

GTA V launched last year and is currently the second most successful video game of all time - a feat it managed in less than a year. However, despite selling almost 4m copies, it has not managed to topple the UK’s current record holder: 2010’s Call of Duty: Black Ops.

MCV understands that GfK Chart-Track will combine the game’s PS4 and Xbox One sales with the PS3 and Xbox 360 SKUs, which means that the title will almost certainly overtake Black Ops to take the crown as the UK’s best-selling title - if not this week, then in the weeks building-up to Christmas.

The UK loves GTA. Don't know one person who doesnt have a copy, even if they didn't like it.

I still find saints row more fun, but im almost compelled to pick it up at some point to play with my mates online.

UK's gaming taste is pretty generic, isn't it. Where's your Landwirtschafts-Simulator, island friends?

Expected given its position before the remaster. And releasing a Kinect title now? That's an exercise in futility I'd suspect but I guess all the Kinect titles that were in flight were left high and dry when MS pulled the device from being mandatory and heading for a fate like this.

Never liked the GTA games besides 1,2 and Chinatown on DS.
Yet I picked up 5 on PS4 and have been playing it non-stop for the past 4 days.

Brilliant game. Fully deserved!

UK here, never owned one, borrowed 4 once, was shit.
4 was terrible. Even got it as a gift from a friend who likes the series but didn't want to keep it since he also hated 4.

Seriously, give 5 a try. The first hour or so feels the same, but after that, things start to click together and it becomes something entirely different.

That's the last-gen and next-gen versions combined, right? Not very surprising if so.
Still a great accomplishment of course.

I find this strange. The best selling game of all time in the UK is a game for adults that has only been on sale for a year or so? Not a game that has been available for years and years and is accessible to all players?

Adults have money to buy what they want.

Plus you are fooling yourself if you dont think a large proportion of GTAs playerbase aren't teens/children.

I'm fully aware of who actually plays GTA games.

I just would have expected the highest sales to go to a game that has been available for a few years, or a bundled game like Wii Sports.

Then again, the UK as a whole have never been big enough Nintendo lovers for Super Mario Bros or Pokemon to take this title.

Cool. Been playing GTA V non stop since I got it and I already beat it on 360 previously. Gonna try 100%ing this time.

Black ops was the previous record holder... Jeez.

Cool to see Far Cry 4 there too. GTA has took my time away from.Far Cry atm, but from what I played, looks better than I was expecting and some of FC3s flaws are fixed. Only thing I have to get used to is driving just with the left stick.

Bundled games don't count. Else Wii Sports would be top, yes.

Mainly because of price. Nintendo games are ridiculously priced years after their release. It doesnt go down well in such a price senstive country. Eventually I fully expect Minecraft to take the top spot.

And yes, Nintendo simply does not have the draw here that it has in the US. They actually have always had competition here even during the 80's.
