Nvidia Launches GTX 980 And GTX 970 "Maxwell" Graphics Cards ($549 & $329)

Except you CAN'T set the color range on the gpu.
Either you change it on your tv (and you have to set for limited), or you get a washed out image.

You can and it's in the nvidia driver. Go to the control panel, desktop settings. There switch from pc to fullscreen video. I'm also outputting limited to limited because my tv only knows limited for hdmi video sources.

It's baffling that this is known so little since its obviously an important setting.

Which one is supposed to be full rgb? Fullscreen video?

My G1's are installed and I am so pumped! Just ran a couple of games at max settings and 4k or a little lower res (using DSR) and maintaining a locked 60fps. And, best of all, perfectly silent. No coil whine that I could detect, and I definitely know what it sounds like. Will see what kind of clocks I can squeeze out of them later.:D

When running games do u set the fan to auto or at a high percent? I have. Evga 970 sc. I have to turn down the clock speed to 90% otherwise it will freeze.

Wait, it works for you guys? It doesn't crash?

Now just check that your TV is set to full range to, otherwise you'll get crushed blacks. :lol

Yeah it has never crashed on me. Always works. Has worked on my HTPC which is a 660ti on a Vizio LCD 70 inch and my main PC which is on Asus gaming monitors with both my 780 and 970 now.

The problem is that it doesn't save all the time. You can use digital vibrance setting to test. Move the slider up and you will see a big difference. Restart the PC and it won't save the setting, If you move the slider again you will see a big difference again. After using the software I mentioned above it will save. This issue only affects HDMI devices. DVI is fine.

Auto. It shouldn't be freezing at factory settings. You should try a driver cleaner, install latest then if it still freezes, RMA.

So far I've let them run on auto and have had no problems. Are your cards overheating? Since they're factory overclocks, maybe they aren't getting enough juice. An old pair of SC cards of mine used to randomly freeze until I bumped the voltage up a notch using Precision. Guessing the OC wasn't stable.

Guys, wanted to ask you a question: I have a Gigabyte g1 980 paired with a stock 3570 i5. I'm getting quite different benchmarks in some games compared to other publications: Thief runs around 60 fps but with quite a few hiccups (when I run the benchmark, I average around 45-50 fps in 1080p compared to 60-70 from most other benchmarks). Also, playing borderlands 2, there are also a lot of dips in fps (for example, that first town in the begining runs around 52 fps in my rig, even at 720p). Tried erasing the drivers with DDU but still no dice. Is my CPU not fast enough for this card or something else is happening? Other games like Shadow of Mordor run flawlessly, quite like the online benchs, halp.
Edit: Also, should I try formatting the PC? I just reinstalled the drivers (with DDU) after switching from my old 660.

How much voltage do I need to bump?

Got my EVGA 970 FTW and am eager to switch over to the green side, so whats the quickest way to get rid of all my AMD drivers?

Display Driver Uninstaller.

On a side note, the G1 Gaming is amazing with a modded BIOS. Its increased the Power Limit, decreased minimum fan speed from 1600 RPM down to 1100 RPM, and increased minimum voltage when in 3D power state so overclocks are rock solid. Holy moley "stock" boost clocks are an insane 1518 Mhz.

It's funny in hindsight how much fretting I did over my EVGA 970 with ACX 1.0 given all the talk at the time of it being practically defective when it came to coil while and overheating. But so far mine has been pretty quiet and cool going by the Precision numbers. And since then I've been reading so many coil whine stories from the other, what had been considered "safer" bets back at the time.

Newegg gave me the game code!! They're so nice! Here I was writing them off, but they were so understanding... I love Newegg <3

and... I was able to achieve this: http://www.3dmark.com/3dm/4625272 Not bad... I would love to see Zotac fix firestorm and update vBios. Or I might just flash the card, but it voids warranty right? Now if I could only figure out why the LED lights are reversed...

So... Far Cry 4 or AC Unity?? or cars? I can't choose :3

OK, so put in my EVGA 970 FTW and so far... so bad. I'm extremely disappointed. The buzzing or coil whine(its actually a really loud buzzing with certain games) is WAY too loud. I updated to the Geforce 344.60 WHQL drivers and i'm almost 100% something went wrong there. I'm just gonna list a bullet point of everything that is going wrong with my new set up.

  • The Card is buzzing way too loud
  • The card is running way too hot, i got max temps of 74C(thats unheard of for me)and on idle its sitting at 51C
  • My monitor(acer XB270H) was set to extreme OD which i just figured out is over voltage and there was an incredible amount of ghosting, i thought for sure i was going to return this monitor.
  • Witcher 2 with ubber sampling and Star citizen make my card scream essentially

I'm gonna try to fix this and then post some impressions. I'm gonna see if i can under clock the card and set frame caps for all my games at 60. I played Chivalry for a little bit and the buzzing was pretty low and i was literally locked at 62 FPS, nothing over, nothing under. I'm thinking its the volatility of the frames thats making my shit buzz so loud. I'm also under the impression that my card's voltage is way too high which is porbably why its getting so hot, either that or its driver related. I'll post more impressions after i sort through this.

I don't have that problem. Never reset itself. I'd instantly see that since my blacks would be grey.

Will a single 980 GTX GPU play Arkham Knight or Witcher 3 1080p 60fps ultra settings?

Do not want to sound rude, but how are we supposed to know? When the Witcher 2 was released even high end cards like the gtx580 or the AMD 6970 had trouble to even achiev 60fps@1080p in ultra. It got much better with patches, driver updates etc. but...

Holy shit.

I just thought my TV was bad. The difference here is staggering.

I never even knew of this problem. I ran Durante's registry fix (thanks!) and the display looks so much better now.

Would this need to be re-run on every new nVidia driver update?

Where are all the SLI profiles for recent and upcoming games and the driver update to add MFAA? It's been quite some time. Do Ryse, Alien, and Shadow of Mordor all still lack any SLI support?

decreased minimum fan speed from 1600 RPM down to 1100 RPM
Isn't that *really* high still?

I've set my MSI minimum speed to 25%, which is 550-600rpm(I have it set to not turn off). But I had it running while playing Ryse yesterday and max speed was only 1400rpm. My max temperature was 68 degrees.

Is that too slow a fan speed? Or is the G1 just meant to run really fast?

This is the fan curve I have set on my MSI 970. This is with an OC of +220 core and +300 memory.

I am not sure if it is too aggressive; I will have a good test of temperatures over the weekend.

I think 20% is about 500rpm. I don't know what these other percentages equate to in RPM; I will display them to screen to see how it measures.

changed the bios of my gigabyte 970 to lower the idle rpm to 1100 instead of the minimum 34% 1500 rpm, much better

can hold 70-75°c with 1300rpm in games now

why increased power limit? the gigabyte already uses 250w with 100%, i limit mine to 80% with a 1450 boost clock

I'll ask this again here. I'm getting my card in today(PNY 970)Do I remove my drivers first, or do it when I have the card installed?

I did it after I'd installed the card, but that's only because I forgot to do it first. Everything seems to be running just fine for me.

Decide for me GAF!

There's only one 970 in stock in my entire country, it's the vanilla Zotac. For 310 bones. I would have liked the MSI for the better cooling, but they say they won't get any more for another week or two and it's at least 40 bones (55USD) more expensive. Should I jump on the Zotac??

Edit: they have one MSI too! Now to decide if I wanna pay $55 more... I hate making decisions :(

Edit 2: got the MSI. My first dedicated GPU in a decade (don't even remember the name of my last one); stoked!

Asked this before but no replies....if I buy an Asus 970 in the US, will I have RMA problems should there be a fault with the card? Would I need to return it to the US?

Is there a manufacturer that adopts a location neutral RMA process?

EDIT: I'm in UK

Is a single 970 likely to get me 1080p 60fps in Project Cars, or will I likely need two?

4K? Yeah maybe. 1080p a single 970 should be fine.

Projet Cars - Recommended Specs (27.05.2014)

CPU - 3.5 GHz Intel Core i7 3700, 4.0 GHz AMD FX-8350
GRAPHICS - nVidia GT600 series, AMD Radeon HD7000 series
MEMORY - 8Gb RAM, 2Gb VRAM

The buzzing is the reason I returned my Asus 970. I couldn't tolerate it. There is definitely coil whine at the high fps, probably for every 970. Witcher 2 menus without vsync is a perfect example. However I consider it a win if you don't have any under 200. I completely empathize on the low fps buzzing though.

Temp wise you seem fine to me. Maybe a little high but if it never breaks 74 then that's OK. It has the idle no fan bios and it has a pretty gentle fan curve. I see mine hit 72-74 for a second here and there but it never sits on that max temp. The fans get it back down pretty quickly.

Is a single 970 likely to get me 1080p 60fps in Project Cars, or will I likely need two?

Not if you want max settings, with lots of cars on track, at a stable 1080p/60fps.

Hot lapping, or a handful of cars, with some nice mid day weather, sure. But PCARS gets really demanding when you throw in weather, low sun and 20+ other cars. I don't consider that extreme, since it's a major selling point of the game.

That, being said, they have some time to optimize.

I have a MSI GTX 980 TO BTW.

74c Max temp is more than fine seriously, but coil whine yes that is a real pain, try capping your games to 60 FPS and see if that helps, beyond that some people have luck changing thier PSU's but obviously that's a pain.

I got my Asus 970 today and yeah in The Witcher 2 menu without vsync (700fps) i can hear very loud coil whine, but beside that everything else i tried that is vsynced at 60 doesn't seem to provoke any coil whine. Also the maximum temperature i saw was 70C so that's good too. It's really amazing how quite can this card be.

EDIT: I'm in UK

I've dealt with Asus support in the UK/EU. They don't handle consumer RMAs, so you'd have to return it to the US shop. Not sure about other manufacturers. I've stopped buying Asus stuff from abroad.

The seal on the box of MSI card I got was broken and it's missing some of the port dust caps. I hope it wasn't a returned one that has issues. Don't think I'll be able to test it today, I'm going to remain anxious until I do :/

Got my second MSI 970 and so far so good with both cards. Neither had any buzzing or whine and both run cool.

Just to note, I returned the first one to Microcenter to buy with the free game deal from Newegg.

Oh yay. Got the buzzing back on BF4 with my new EVGA FTW 970. Sigh. At least it's a lot less severe than the ASUS was. I've already registered the card and have the backplate on the way, etc. I guess I'm living with it. I love the 970 for its performance but this coil whine crap is beyond annoying.

Future proofing with PC gaming is so hard. It's very difficult to predict accurately how the trends are going to move and how quickly that will happen. Someone that spent a ton of extra money getting a 4 gig video card a few years ago when 2gigs was the standard never really saw that come to fruition. Now that games are looking for 4, the top end cards are $330 and blow those older cards out of the water.

Great post, you've explained exactly why there's no need for ppl after good to great performance to stretch their budget to accommodate top end hardware.

At 1080, with all settings to high and physx on normal, why am I getting 60 FPS in the Arkham Origins benchmark? Shouldnt I be seeing much higher scores here?

Edit: oh it's cause I had v sync on. Is it standard to have v sync off for benchmarks? It seems that vsync limits fps to 60 max

I'm letting my card run Valley over the weekend while we are out. I don't think it will help, but I'm ruling it out. The buzzing on my evga acx 2.0 is incredibly bad.
