Speaking of, did Charizard always have super armor on rock smash?

I *think* he did, but it wasnt nearly as powerful as it is now, I think previously he only had armor when he was breaking the rock with his face. Now its basically the entire animation,.

I could be wrong, and thinking PM or something.

I downloaded this game yesterday, and its my first Smash Bros game. I watched people play Melee last EVO and it looked like fun, so I figured I'd give this series a whirl.

Can anyone give me any tips on how to get somewhat competent at this game starting as a beginner? I dont intend to be a pro player or anything, but this seems like a fun game to play online and get gradually better at. What are the best online resources to look stuff up and learn? Not all of this game makes sense. For example, Mario pulls out a cape for his forward special attack, but I couldn't find what it did exactly anywhere in the game until I looked up online that it reflects projectiles. Also, any recommendations for beginner-friendly and above all fun characters?

Thanks!

Both sides of the argument are somewhat correct. The 3ds controls are obviously less than ideal. I've suicided as ness a few times because the analog is much more difficult to control on the 3ds vs a GameCube controller. I also find myself barely down smashing. It's very difficult to pull off. Can these issues be overcome? Absolutely. Bubsy 3d had terrible controls but you could still be good at the game. Doesn't mean the controls are fluid. Now smash3ds controls are nowhere near the problems of a busby3d. They are pretty good for the most part, but there are some issues that make certain moves difficult, that you can't just say "it's the user'a fault"

I get through all of All Star near-flawlessly. Make it through the penultimate stage by the skin of my teeth. Eat the two heart containers I'd saved and hit 0%. Reach the last stage. It's FD Arena Ferox, a stage I'm very familiar with. So far so good.

SD off the ledge because my circle pad thought I Side-B'd instead of Up-B'd.

Fair enough, but that was a direct response to this.

The 3DS controls are definitely not ideal, but this sounds like user error. Don't blame the controls like they are just performing ghostly inputs against your will.

Uhh, no. I don't know what the fuck you are talking about.

Implication? That there was no possible way it was a result of his thumb not actually being where he thought it was. Hence my sarcastic response. Context is important.

EDIT:

When someone agrees with me.
You've got something on your nose, there.
When someone agrees with you.
Exactly. It's like he tried to make what he just typed into some kind of kind mild objection when clearly he was being a jackass and trying to dismiss any complaints I had.

I think calling someone a brown-noser is more dismissive of debate and more directly insulting than me telling you that your control mishaps were your own error and not the controller being inherently broken.

Yeah, ok man. Nothing is ever the result of your mistakes, right? How would you explain the millions of players who don't have that issue? How would you explain the incredible players on here playing against each other and not doing that, myself never having that issue, and pro players never complaining that "up b performs a side b".

User error.

It's happened to me several times, but it's literally my fault, not the game's. It's the angle at which i'm holding the 3DS that's causing it. At no point in time did I blame smash bros or the 3DS itself.

For basic special move effects, try checking out the manual actually. It has a nice fold out with descriptions of moves for the starting roster.

Overall, I don't know that I can link to any good, comprehensive research. This game is so recent, there's not much as far as documentation and guides. Do check out the character specific forums on Smashboards though. They're kind of hit or miss right now, but if you go there look around, you'll probably find some good things. Also, don't be afraid to ask questions, here or there! Definitely do pick out which character you like the best, and try to dissect their moves, read Smashboards, and watch videos of skilled players.

So for all you tournament minded people out there, how's the stage selection for 3DS? (not that it'll be the main one people play anyway...)

By my count there's Battlefield, FD and all Omega forms, Yoshi's Island, Prism Tower, Arena Ferox and Tomodachi Life as legal, and maaaybe Rainbow Road, Mute City, Corneria and Brinstar as counterpicks? Though I could see those being too active to ever be considered, and even Arena Ferox has a lot of transformations with caves...

hmmm are there no n64 stages in this?

The only past stages are stages that were already featured in Brawl, which had no N64 stages.

Terrible, buts its terrible for non tourney play too. Also Arena Ferox and and Tomodachi Life won't be tourney legal.

Had the same experience with Captain Falcon.

Raged so hard. :lol

Yeah, FD and Omegas, BF, and YI for sure.

I think Prism, Ferox, Corneria, Japes, and Brinstar should all be counterpicks too. Tomodachi seems too big and campable, but I could be wrong on it. Mute City is probably ok, I haven't played enough there to be sure. Rainbow Road seems like it gets a little excessive sometimes; I'm leaning towards no on it.

I like playing practice mode in slo-mo (1/2 or 1/4 speed) and pretend I'm a pro smash player with lightning fast reflexes. I can totally combo from bomb hitstun into a short hop nair.

There are balance issues in stages for sure. Like Paper Mario for the most part is pretty tame until you get to Bowser then you are struggling to find a place to stand.
The TL stage is way too big for me and so is the Boxing Ring. Nintendogs stage is actually probably my favorite.

I don't think Omega stages will be used in competitive play. They make counterpicks really wonky, see PM counterpicks. Sure, all the stages are flat and reasonably "neutral" (FD is not neutral but that is beside the point) but the BOTTOM of the stage is also a factor.

"Tower" stages that go from the battle area on top all the way to the blast zone allowing for wall jumps are beneficial to many characters, it improves Falcon's recovery for example since it adds a wall jump along with his second jump and up special.

Technically counterpick stage bans could just ban "all the tower Omega stages" instead of just one but then you get into the problem of remember which if these 50 or whatever stages are actually towers.

I think FD will be FD, and MAYBE one Omega tower-style stage will be used for competitive play to simplify things. (Or course most tournament rules allow for play on banned stages if both players agree, so technically other stages might see play, but I don't think they will be standard).

My big issue with the Paper Mario stage is that I think the first two sections would've worked just fine as individual stages, but they decided to bundle them together and then throw the awful Bowser's Castle part in.

I just can't get over a lot of their decisions with this stage selection. There's a couple of really good ones, but the rest are hindered by a bunch of dumb decisions.

Like, there's obviously a version of WarioWare in the game that doesn't have minigames attached, so why can't we choose to play on it outside of All Star mode? Or why did they bother making unique Wily Castle transformations for both versions when they only last 10 seconds before the Yellow Devil shows up?

A bad adapter maybe. The general idea is that the USB adapter has less latency than wifi.

Wifi's latency is not that much higher.
I never tested the Wii or other Nintendo devices,
but depending on your network's situation, it shouldn't add more than 10ms.
Probably a lot less.
Test it with your smartphone, or notebook.

compared to the latency of the internet, that isn't much, but it might be the final nail in the coffin, if your connection to other players is not that good.

Yea. I was very dismissive of his comment. He didn't say anything however worth a response, so I gave it the best I had. Reiterating what I already disagreed with when you said it.

I don't think anyone is blaming the game. We are blaming the device on which the game runs. Circle Pad =/= Smash 3DS.

Me and my 60ms ping would definitely appreciate that -10ms.

I've been playing on nothing but Omega stages really. I'm not even a super competitive player, love items etc. but I don't like giant stages on a little screen, nor do I like stages that change around.

Speaking of giant, is it just me or does Ω Wario Ware seem huge?

The worst part is that for most of these stages there's a happy medium for everything that they completely missed. They could've had a Δ mode that disabled a lot of the really obtrusive hazards while keeping everything else intact. Δ mode Magicant would disable Flying Men, Δ Find Mii would turn off the Ultimate emperor, Δ Pac-Maze would've disabled power pellets and the ghosts... but now we either have to live with them or play on FD.

Why wouldn't Gaur Plain be a legal stage? Just because the top part is a walk off? But the rest of the stage ISN'T a walk off. I don't get it.

If the top part is a walk off and it's constantly there, then it has the same issues as every other walk off. Fighters would just gravitate toward it because it's easier to kill.

Had quite a few entertaining matches last night in For Glory. Fought a fairly skilled Luigi and Olimar player named Greg and managed to take every match but one. We traded crouches and taunts in respect.

Proceeded to have a curious encounter with a Ness player named Andrew who only seemed interested in taking a relaxed stroll through Gaur Plains. He spent so much of the match prone I couldn't help but start feeling a little bad about playing hacky sack with a human being.

I was feeling pretty cocky by the time a player named Satan entered the room. From the audacious name, I can't say I expected much, but this guy's Marth game was absolutely elegant and leagues above my Mega Man, Link, or Toon Link scrubbery. Each of his six victories was thoroughly earned. My few, scattered, brilliant moments against him failed to seal the deal even once. I enjoyed every losing second for reminding me of the immaculate display of which a skilled Marth player is capable and demonstrating that the skill ceiling in Smash 4 is considerably high.

As long as there's a persistent walk off somewhere, somebody's gonna go up there and stand, waiting for you to walk over so they can throw you backwards. They might get killed for trying, but it still devolves the game into something less.
