Why is Alph a costume rather than a clone?

or

Why is Dark Pit a clone rather than a costume?

The inconsistency annoys me.

Same here. Also wish Bowser Jr. had some alt colors, since it's also weird that little mac's wireframe has a full set, his own costume, and a bunch of normal colors. Hell, other people like wario, robin, wii fit, etc. get cut in half by the swaps too.

Oh yeah that too. Wireframe Mac only needed to be the one costume, but if they can make an exception for that and give it 8, they can give Bowser Jr, Wario etc 16 costumes too.

Sakurai explained it with Lucina. A clone gets their own slot when there's even the slightest change to their moveset.

But why was Dark Pit the one given changes to his moveset when Alph remained a costume, even with his unique model? Though maybe the separate voiceset, and ease of replacing weapon models for visual differentiation helped. In any case, I hope Lucina, Dr. Mario and Dark Pit are rolled back into their parent characters in the next game, with their statistical differences replicable through custom moves and equipment.

Haha, well I suck with Rosalina, but I can tell she's a great counter pick for Mac. I'm going to try and work her out.

EDIT: Or not! Let me try and actually give you a challenge...

Don't you just hate it when you're playing For Glory and lose to a fighter pretty badly, so you want a rematch because obviously you don't wanna go down like that, but they leave the room? Don't you just hate that? I sure do... -_-;

Heh it does suck... The best is when you get a stage that has a theme you really like, and somehow you overcome the skill difference...but only for that short moment lol.

I get what you're saying, and maybe that's the reason why I wasn't that excited about her inclusion initially is because the stuff that really makes her exciting is her conversations, not her fighting, but I still think she's a missed opportunity in this game. Losing Ali Hillis might really have gone a long way, because I swear something about her VA in this game nearly makes me cringe. Even if it's just mainly yells and a few words, I feel like those few sound bits are so important in subtlety capturing a character in fighting games, especially when a character is first being defined in them, and Palutena in this game completely misses the mark on that.

As far as her animations go, I only played her once in classic and have just observed her a few times as an opponent, but while not they're not awful, I still feel like they missed the mark. Her smash attacks are great, but everything else is pretty meh. Her feet should be projecting light when she kicks. Her up air should shine a beam of light above it. Her forward tilt should look like a a true whirlwind of power. She had so much potential to look like an amazing goddess, but instead she just flips her staff around a lot.

I'll have to play her again and observe the animations more closely, but overall she just seems much more uninspired than she could've been.
Palutena could probably have been implemented better, sure. That said, I actually liked the whole thematic principle behind most of Palutena's attack animations, and I think making all of her attacks super-flashy would have gotten in the way of it. Say what you want about her playstyle, but I noticed a pretty clear and unified vision in how Palutena attacks and moves in the game - most of her tilts, all twirly as they are, sorta feel like she's not throwing them out very seriously; kind of a casual godly backhand since she doesn't have to expend the effort to fight you seriously. When she unleashes a portent of her divine abilities (and when shit gets real, see: her Smash attacks) the sigil appears behind her and a suitably impressive looking attack comes out because she's done playing around. Having every attack look like this vortex of divine punishment sort of takes away from the 'oh shit just got real' factor of her grander smash attacks.

...of course, I wouldn't mind not having to deal with all the normals involving twirling her staff if it meant less laggy attacks. :lol

I feel like the VA thing is straight up a little less important for me. Not that I don't adore KIU's voice acting (and count myself as a general enthusiast in that realm), but Palutena in the game is really only calling out her powers with an occasional unique victory quote against Kid Icarus characters. Since there's nothing substantial, like a codec or something that would make me feel bad about Hillis not voicing Palutena or anything, there's really nothing that I have against the voice performance. I suppose that's part of your general issue, but I can live with it more or less. In any case, I think I found Brandy Kopp to do a decent enough job filling in, even if Ali Hillis would have been ideal.

Unrelatedly relatedly, I'm having way too much fun with the Palutena vs Little Mac match-up with her custom moves set up. I baited my friend's Mac into trying to counter me on the Jump Glide approach (since he was assuming I'd throw out a bair) and just crossed him up and threw him off-stage and into a charged Up-Smash when he tried coming back. :lol

I definitely feel you about the USmash. In theory, it's an excellent anti-air tool, but the fact that the beam of light is so narrow means it's all-too easy for opponents to air dodge through even though I'm ostensibly nailing them. :/

And I'm still skeptical about the FSmash--not to say I don't believe you, of course! Perhaps I just haven't adjusted to the spacing yet, but I seem to have a hard time landing it.
Fsmash is pretty situational in general. I use it to punish landing lag on aerials/endlag on Smash attacks (especially near the edge) or whiffed Counters and the like, since it's pretty easy to react to in most other situations. I wouldn't fuss too much about the spacing, otherwise. Kind of those things you eventually get a decent enough feel over.

...jeez, I've played so much Palutena today that I'm convinced that my Robin play has fallen apart again. Gonna be sticking my Levin Sword out expecting a beam of light to appear. I still can't believe that I was better at Robin late into day one than I am now. :lol

Just had a loooong series of matches against a Rosalina player using random fighters. Pretty fun on my end, hope it was the same for my opponent since they stuck around even when they won like 90% of the time. Wario and Olimar seemed to do best for me (judging by one match for almost all the characters, anyway.)

Man, the slide pad is awful for this game. You're lucky that this game is insanely fun Nintendo!

Yeah, Doc and Black Costume Pit are the weakest part of the roster for me. I liked Doc's Melee moveset returning, but I'm just way to spoiled by the way Brawl and this game redid the characters that used to be clones and made them feel fresh. It just feels like a half assed way to increase roster size. They would've been great alts.

It is kind of weird how Lucina being a better Roy, meant Marth had to get severely nerfed. His counter might be the best in the game though, or at least tied with Shulk's (when it lands).

Is this a NA thing? I barely see any Japanese/aussies use mac in for glory
He does seem to be more popular here in the West compared to Japan.

Also after like 5 matches of getting bodied by the same Little Mac, I finally figured out a good counter: Ganondorf.

It was so good, I had to record the replay with my blurry phone camera :P I'll post it here soon.

So after getting the hang on how to play this game I reseted it along with my online stats. Won 4 matches and now I'm scared of playing more. I kind of wish there were no stats, they always screw with my enjoyment of competitive games :x.

I was battling a guy with Little Mac and winning but then got destroyed by Ganondorf. That may have been me.

Yay, finally getting better with Lucina! :-D

Played a decent Ganondorf on For Glory who suicided and dragged me down with him, and died at the same time. Should we not have entered Sudden Death?

Japan called him a gorilla (amongst other things) so I kinda doubt that Mac will ever see use there. Not sure about Australia, I'm gonna use the shit out of him.

Is this really the case for Japan? I always assumed the Ike and Mac being gorillas comments being like the Shulk, Robin, Palutena, and Lucina "being too anime" comments we see in America-stuff a small minority says but doesn't honestly give a shit about.

Sakurai explained it with Lucina. A clone gets their own slot when there's even the slightest change to their moveset.

The real question then is: What made him decide to change Dark Pit's moveset instead of just making him a costume? The changes are so marginal he could as well been a costume instead.

Admittedly aside from random 2ch comments I don't know. You're probably right.

After realizing no one in For The Glory 1v1 is willingly to fuck around and have a good time, and everyone is a try hard, I've developed a pocket Lucania.

My Win rate shot from my 10% screwing around to 60%. I still try and have some fun though, and if I get 2 consecutive wins And the dude doesn't quit, I change character for some variety. Usually my rotation is Sonic > Pikachu > Kirby > Charizard. Usually people quit before Kirby.

I did have one amazing game where I picked Kirby and the dude picked Jigglypuff, and this was our 5th match (I won 2, him 2), and when we saw our choices we spent all 5 minutes fooling around and bouncing around each other and taunting instead of fighting.

5 minutes of pure fun, this is what I wish Smash was all the time. :(

Nintendo needs to add a recreational casual 1v1 mode with Items and proper stages (not Final Destination only)

It's just cherry picking from internet whiners. You can find people talking smack about everyone everywhere if you look hard enough. (Also the "gorilla" comments aren't even really supposed to be an insults generally, it's just a slang term for someone muscular.)

I don't think there's any conspiracy against any character...
Except Ridley. XD

I've heard many complaints about 4-player matches being laggy, but I had 10 consecutive For Fun matches with full 4 slots and was virtually lag-free. Surprisingly even better than 1vs1 For Glory. Maybe the best connections are loving For Fun more than For Glory lol.

All these Little Macs in For Glory are getting on my fucking nerves. It's really ridiculous how one character can make you change your playstyle that you've developed. But the real thing is how he's being overused in so many matches. Usually after I destroy someone, they switch to Little Mac to counter me, and I just beat them again... but I still had to camp more often than not.

Anyway, rant over. Carry on.

I love the game, but fucking hell Palutena sucks ass. Slow as shit, no range, retarded attacks and no defense.
Urgh.
Swap out her specials for Superspeed and Jump Glide. Accept that her jabs and tilts suck and you should rarely willingly use them and approach with off the ground Jump Glide for a fast-moving grounded aerial approach. Trick people by switching between fairs, bairs, and grabs if they try to block or counter. Embrace Autoreticle and keep your opponent on the back foot as much as you can. Neutral game is the most advantageous position for Palutena, so keep your opponent there and frustrated. Exploit the hell out of her pivot grabs and get people off stage as much as you can and nail people off the ledge with her absurdly good Up Smash. Chase people off stage with Superspeed since Jump Glide makes returning from a mile away from the stage a cinch. Never stay close to your opponent for more than a few seconds.

find a different character in case of greninja or sheik
