Learn how to read moves. you cant spam dodge rolls & actually win unless the person your playing against is bad.. there is an actual pattern & route you have to take in smash 4 especially. Its not as simple as spam dodge & ur cheap / guaranteed a win. People who try to spam dodge roll on me usually get grabbed or punished since they are just doing it randomly with no actual plan of attack.

Saying you dont like competitive smash cause its 'cheap' just sounds like you put yourself in bad positions & get punished a lot. Your most likely not doing any homework into how stage movement in smash works, but rather just randomly coming up with ways to hit your opponent on the fly.

tl:dr if you play smash against a good player you cant just randomly do inputs based on the situation to win. you have to actually know how the meta game works lol

EDIT: I saw someone post almost the exact same thing in the KI thread xD someone saying competitive KI is so dumb because people spam combo breakers then someone told them: "Try learning manuals & mixups so your combos aren't so predictable." Smash is essentially the same. If you make yourself easy you will seem like your getting cheaped on but really your just not playing smart.

I've been playing fighters for 20 years so I know footsies and metagame. Still, competitive smash is annoying. Loses the spirit of smash IMO.

Edit: To expound, what I mean is the chaotic dynamic environment. Competitive smash scene thinks of itself so high and mighty, but every argument it uses can be used in favor of at the very least other stages. Every stage follows a pattern, so learning the stage patterns and conditioning your play to it is part of the game. Complaining about non-FD stages to me is like complaining about levels in FPS games. Do real competitive FPS games need to be flat infinite fields? No. You learn how to manage corners and platforms and campers and all that shit. It's part of the game.

I can more understand arguments against items since their spawning is truly random, but I still ultimately feel the same way about most of those. Part of your game has to be managing their use properly both defensively and offensively. It isn't a far worse game competitively using items unless you're being a child about it.

Speedy gets rekt in SmashGAF too.

EDIT: That being said, the meta game and crappy circle pad sure make it a chore to play 1v1s sometimes. This game needs Z/L canceling or more shield stun if the air-approach game is to develop, otherwise people are going to be glued to the ground.

Lol super fat. His playstyle is awesome and you're doing some cool things with him, but whenever I play him he feels so sluggish. You're ZSS is pretty damn good!

Has anyone had the problem with getting stuck in the waiting area for For Glory matches? It says "OK!" for both of us but I've been in here for a couple minutes. Should I just quit and take the loss?

the "spirit of smash" is subjective. its the competitive smash scene that's growing at a ridiculous rate on sites like twitch & youtube. In the end If you don't like competitive smash you can easily play for fun rules anyway. i guarantee people who enjoy vanilla smash are too focused on scrambling for items than using dodge roll or anything else.

I personally hate random elements accidentally giving someone the win. just like mario kart its extremely frustrating not being rewarded for being good at the game. I enjoy goofy bonkers fun smash here & there to just goof around, but most of the time I like winning due to my own merit not cause of a slot machine =)

Edit: Some stages are just far too obnoxious with hazards though. That's the issue. you cant have a balanced experience if the stage is constantly screwing with your mobility. comparing it to shooters is completely unreasonable as its a completely different game genre mechanically. its just more room for the players skills to be fleshed out when the stages are just flat or flat with platforms.

I do agree that SOME of the competitive smash scene have some obnoxious ego's but you cant judge the entire competitive community as ego jerks. im pretty sure there are plenty of casuals that have big heads despite never even going to a tournament. There are so many tier 1 players in the competitive scene putting money & time into helping anyone who isnt nearly good for tournaments get experienced & taught in the ways of competitive smash. mew2king himself is putting so much crazy effort into his new site to info dump all the ins & outs of competitive smash in a user friendly way.

not everyone who is insanely good at the game are bad guys.

Thanks I am still putting together her options my friend is teaching me her meta @.@

Im just so terrible and keep suiciding lol... its so frustrating that my brain works faster than my hands on this stupid 3ds GRR i wish there was a way to be more comfy with it. so many times i just SD for dumb reasons cause my hand feels weird just when i really get into the groove of things.

Fuck, I'm addicted to making Mii Fighters.
A8gwIUi.png

Just brought the Pro-PAIN with Hank Hill. Anyone else hooked?

On another note, they ruined Sonic; what's the point if he doesn't say "UR 2 SLOW"?

And you are probably still bad.. :P
Well my Win record just went from 10% trying to have some fun playing with Pikachu and starting every game by taunting to 40% by countering everything with Lucani.

Almost every single move in this game has a ridiculously easy read and every single competitive smasher does the same few combos and movements that each Character specifically has. Doesn't take a genius to quickly catch on and learn to respond. Lucina is an easy counter because she moves fast and because she can counter almost everything.

Just a shame how lame Competitive smash is. Why can't I have fun 1v1 with items where people play for fun instead of a lame super try hard "Roll around for 2 minutes in an attempt to have someone mess up their attempts so you can get one good combo and repeat".

Wasn't too laggy at all. Was a little bit but that's to be expected when it was an Australia vs Japan match.

My Zero Suit vs a Bowser Jr.

I had a terrible start and was at about 40% while he was sitting nicely on 0%, but I started getting in the groove of it and ended up 2 stocking him ending on a nice 122% :)

D: Any tips bruh?

My current options are dash into uair, ledge guarding with up-b, dash then jump into uair, and very rarely I get a hit with down b. But I mainly use down-b to gain control of the stage again. I also try to use f-smash, but with characters with long range smashes I don't usually hit.

Sorry if the wording sound weird, trying to make it sound as simple as possible.
You don't seem to be fully utilizing a lot of your potential kill options.

d-smash, last hit of bair, and a non-spike fair can all lead to clean KOs off the side. nair can also do the job if you chase them off the stage, though if they are at a really high % then you can often just nair them on the stage and then they're bye-bye. Speaking of which, this isn't the dark ages of past Smash games anymore. Chasing foes off the stage is actually a perfectly legitimate strat for Yoshi now because most of his aerials are either KOs off the side, spikes, or the potential for either, and he can still usually recover just fine afterwards now.

Also, don't use your up-smash too much outside of getting KOs. When it's fresh it's basically, "Oh, you screwed up at a decent %? You're dead. Enjoy!" It has good range and can even be done out of shield, and since Yoshi's fast he can also just run up and upsmash particularly severe mistakes.

Im not even going to explain how many things are wrong with what you just said lol Lucina? Fast? xD

also the meta hasnt even evolved yet & your basically saying all competitive players are doing the same combos? im pretty sure you havent played a single actual high level player yet, let alone enough matches against good players to make such a generalization. And again, stay out of for glory if you dont like 1v1's with no items o.O its perplexing how much of an issue you have with the competitive rules as if someones forcing you to play it. Just play for fun or set up your own rooms for 1v1's with items.

its pointless & rude to keep bad talking competitive smash when you dont have any true idea of how it flows based on how you talk about it and how "easy" it is. Your making random assumptions & generalizations with 0 proof. I'd like to see you at the next tournament placing if its so simple to read & pickup competitive smash 4 =P

GG's Tsumiya, I liked fighting your Shulk and your ZSS. You were using those buffs well, he is hard as fuck to kill when yellow and can knock you the hell out when he's red lol.

GG's Toller I actually have to go study with friends for now =D hopefully next time i wont SD so many times
(ノ゚Д゚)ノ Fighting you was super fun especially when you pulled out captain falcon. intense fast matches that really made me think steps ahead when we were dancing around in the air especially XD when i stop suiciding the matches are going to get super crazy!

P.S maybe i wont give up on shulk just yet >.> If I really do have a good grip on his skills maybe i just need to give it some time to sink in~

Metal characters are by far the hardest thing in classic mode aside from Master Core. Give me teammates against THOSE, not giant characters that die easily.

Also, throws send you way, way too far in this game. Makes walkoff edges even more terrible because all you have to do is grab someone near the side of the stage and it's damn near an auto-KO even at lower percents for many characters.

I mained Ike in Brawl, so Shulk doesn't really feel slow to me. XD Still getting the hang of using his Monado Arts at the right time but it's starting to click. Speaking of Ike, I'm also really enjoying playing as him in this. I really like that Aether can suck most enemies in for the whole attack in this game unlike Brawl, makes it a nice anti-air. Also enjoying the new Zelda and those amazing teleport explosions.

My big weakness is shield grabs though, I need to condition myself to not fall into those. I also hate that I can't really get the amount of control I'd like on the Circle Pad, I feel like I'm trying to space myself and screw up and move right into an attack sometimes, or try to tilt and end up getting a Smash Attack instead. XD

Anyone know why Nintendo limited the taunts you can do in an online match? The best parts is always taunting did every single thing.

Successful grab? Sonic Speed!
KO? Sonic Speed!
Random Punch that did 1%? Sonic Speed!

Learn how to better express yourself. You're no better than a troll right now, but your "point" may be sound because Smash 4 is currently about maintaining ground control since rolls, shields and dodges are so effective. Simply generalizing competitive Smash as "lame" just makes you look like an ignorant fool.

This game is in dire need of Z/L canceling to keep 1v1's interesting for me. High level play is so damn defensive and not punishable enough. When you have a game built around defensive mechanics/tactics, the meta game shapes in a way that's less interesting IMO. It really doesn't help that the circle pad is not optimal for Smash, but I can't imagine things like easily shielding any air approach changing for the Wii U version, nor do I expect the ability to go into matchmaking with 1. single. friend. and search for randoms.

So much potential, only time will tell.

I fought a great Japanese Shulk player and oh my he really looks awesome. I got devastated by combos and hard hits that I almost rage quitted lol. Granted, I'm just a pretty decent character, but with a player that has very nice timing and tremendous focus on shuffling his buffs, Shulk is just so deadly.

Captain Falcon's my main dude, he's so much better in this. With Falco lookin like the secondary at this point. Yeah they got super intense, I need to learn more about ZSS. And with Shulk he seems like he could be great when using those buffs right which you were doing well, but I just think that's going to naturally be hard in a 1 v 1.

I know what you're sayin about the 3DS. Can't wait to be able to really smash that gamecube analog again.

Guys I fixed the roster.

No you didn't, there's still no Snake.

I just played a guy so fucking good with Yoshi. Some of the shit he was doing I didn't even know you could do.

I am trying to learn Shulk. I am having issues with him as I am used to very fast characters such as Sonic and ZSS. Though, I don't have issues using Peach or Game and Watch so maybe I am just bad with him.... Or maybe it is because I have been using the four characters I mentioned for years.

Play some guys here, serve you up real well lol

Played against a good Robin player. Still ended up winning the match, but the first KO was in under 30 seconds, Couldn't even touch him. Was using his specials so effectively I couldn't properly get back on the map, and finally ended up meteor smashing me to my death at like 50%.

Didn't even know Robin could combo so heavily.
