If you're having trouble with Mac, I recommend Lucario. He has speed, a good projectile, a counter, and can survive Mac's strong attacks. I recommend him for most everybody else too, except projectile heavy characters like Link and Toon Link.

hey smashgaf! first time poster, long time lurker here.
this is actually my first post on gaf ever lol

I just got the game today :D Attempting to unlock everyone first before I go online and stuff.

Any daring to try FFAs? With customs? Just wondering, if not back to unlocking customs.

btw, one of the biggest crimes of this game is that you can't look up recently played people in the online modes. There's been a few good rounds I've had in 1v1 For Glory but couldn't add them as a friend...good thing the Wii U allows that.

Go online first. Make use of those first 120 games with good practice from good people. Then go to the solo mode and unlock them one match at a time. So easy and you won't get left behind in skill.

GGs! Your Ness is insane! I have so much trouble with projectile heavy characters but darn it I almost refuse to use anyone tiny with a reflector. I love my biggies!

Anyone up for some 1on1?

So, who do you think is the most nerfed character so far? It's gotta be one of Falco, Meta Knight, or Olimar.

Meta Knight just feels neutered. Like, he feels he still has his good points, but the overpowering aspects were cut.

Olimar seems like a shadow of his former self. The upgraded recovery does not overcome the weakened smashes and lower Pikmin count. I didn't realize how useful having six Pikmin was until this game forced me to only have three.

But Falco seems to have gotten the shortest of the short sticks. I really can't, for the life of me, figure out what he's supposed to be good at. Blaster having no landing canceling on top of having more ending lag just makes it worthless, no chain grab, down aerial much slower... so what's he supposed to be?

I'm going with Falco.

Alot of the characters transitioned well to the 3DS, but to me duck hunt dog looks not great in screenshots because of his really simple design makes the technical flaws stand out alot

In motion, though, Duck Hunt Dog is one of the most expressive characters of the bunch. He has a sinister look on his face as he kicks his can into play, he hides and looks around as his can comes near him, he scratches his neck with his hind leg and he and the duck sniff the ground when idle, he points with both fingers in the direction a gunman will face, and all kinds of other fun animations.

Plus, his whimper while being KO'd off the top of the screen is one of the most heart-breaking sounds I've ever heard in a video game....

I need help SmashGAF. Any tips for going against link? He's my buddy's main and he just wrecks me. I play shulk and Wii Fit trainer with shulk being my actual main.

My issue is I just can't get close. Either he's controlling a corner busting out the arrow, boomerang, and bomb. Or he gets me once I get close. link pretty much can handle any situation. Making it really hard for me using melee only characters.

My snake vs his link were always fun battles. But now it's been one sided in his favor.

Oh my God.

The "Smooth Lander" effect on equipment is amazing. Ganondorf feels great with it. It removes a bunch of landing lag from aerial moves (Ganondorf's Dair still has some which is understandable).

"Meta Knight isn't broken like in Brawl" is hardly a fair comparison, I have a feeling if he didn't exist/wasn't that good in Brawl people wouldn't view his Smash 4 version like this

Too be honest? Metaknight, because he's not broken anymore.

Olimar has gotten -respectable- nerfs but is still usable. Also he seems to just barely be feasible in this version of the game.

Falco's best tools from the past have been rendered to almost useless, but I feel his aerials and smashes are good. It's like he sparred with Wolf before they said farewell...

Link is someone I have a lot of trouble with to, I usually switch to Rosalina for her Down B. But I think the key is patience, avoid his projectiles and make him do something stupid and unsafe.

Well, there goes my win ratio. Started at like 65% tonight. Decided to go all Pac Man for training purposes. Was doing decently, until I got frustrated at Ike and his giant sword, and out of pride kept battling this dude until I won...took a while.

-_-

Goddamn, I'm not sure if it's just because I've yet to have ever actually played against a Yoshi, but good lord the dinosaur is MEAN now!
I don't think my Yoshi is any good just wanted to try him out. He's really good for FFAs because people fall for smash attacks easier there. Oh and his dash is different

Well you cleaned my clock with him. I had absolutely no defense against him, and Mega Man is the character I've used the most. But you were the first person who'd ever used Yoshi against me, so I dunno how much that factored into it. It'll probably be like when I finally face a Diddy Kong, I'll get creamed into next year.

Last game, TWILT. It has been intense. GGs

GGs man. Ahhhh, rolls are so hard to punish in this game. I also have no idea what to do against a good Mega Man.

Custom moves Link was really fun to play as though; gotta practice more with them.

Haven't played Falco yet, so it's a close toss-up between Olimar and Meta Knight. For the former, I don't like having only really Pikmin and the weakened range/power of his smashes/grabs are disheartening. Hard to manage on the small 3DS screen, too. I might have a better time with him on the Wii U version, but it's still disappointing.

Meta Knight does feel neutered as well, but they had to nerf him, so I'm more lenient with him. Gonna try him out again shortly.

Controls felt really wonky to me at first (haven't played a smash game in long time) but I'm really loving this as it feels more comfortable. Toon Link is my favorite so far.

Wanted to main Mega Man but he feels odd atm. Starting to use his forward down / forward up a skills more and it feels better.
