Dumb from a sales standpoint, but boy did it feel cool walking out of the Xbone launch with a new EAD Tokyo Mario and the best Zelda since Majora's Mask! :-D

Let's talk DLC.
I want a Dry Bowser clone of Bowser. He's technically his own character these days. My favorite appearance was his recurring boss role in the Special World of 3D Land. :-D
They could make him lighter, with greater range on the Whirling Fortress, the Bowser Bomb, the Flying Slam, etc. They could tweak the properties of his Fire Breath, and make it blue. Because blue flames are tight, and also sweet. Also, they can give him the chilling roar he has in some of the Mario spinoffs.
Do it, Nintendo. Alongside an Isabelle clone of Villager.

Aside from the graphics and the control scheme there'll barely be a difference then. It's all FD stages and the same characters.
Selling clones as DLC would be a pretty shitty business practice and waste of everyone's time. This would probably be the only way they could make me NOT buy Smash DLC.
Dry Bowser is a palette swap.
This makes all the difference.

I think at this point it's pretty clear that Sakurai is a fan of clones, and has no intention to drop clones in the future, or make them any less "cloney". He brought back Doc, ffs. The character everyone thought was going to become an alt costume.
We might as well start theorizing future clones, like Dry Bowser.

Yep. I'm being realistic here, people. Something like Dry Bowser is a quick turnaround they could realistically implement without having to invest too much time designing and balancing. And frankly, something like Dry Bowser would feel a great deal different than, say, Dr. Mario vs. Mario or Dark Pit vs. Pit, largely by virtue of his appearance.
I'd sooner argue for Isabelle, though. She'd be a perfect clone of Villager. Just sprinkle in a few new animations and facial expressions to properly convey her panicky personality. And when she's in play, disable her AT and have her brother, Digby, show up to do the same thing instead.
They could still use that time better.
Clones exist for the purpose of roster padding when no time is left to make new characters. Making clones after the game is released when time restrictions are much more lax is a terrible waste of time. And I'm pretty sure palette swaps take a lot less time to make than a new character, even if they are just clones. Though if they were selling a DLC pack of nothing but palette swaps, I might not buy that. I'd expect that kind of stuff to be included with substantial things, like stages or characters.
He is very inconsistent with clones though. Having full character alts (Alph + Koopalings) mixed with clones is kind of weird. Having a Dark Samus "alt" as a costume and Dark Pit as a character is super inconsistent.
It doesn't bother me at all but Sakurai is completely unreadable haha.

But Doc is an iconic Nintendo character, even though it's literally just Mario in a different outfit. Dark Pit is the first clone who has zero redeeming qualities, other than the fact that a few Japanese people voted for him in a poll that was conducted right after Kid Icarus: Uprising was released. Dry Bowser would be the second.

If it plays the same, it's an alt model. If it plays different, it's a clone with its own slot.
Also, there are many differences between the actual Dark Samus (seen in the Assist Trophy) and the simple recolor of the Varia Suit you can use.

Young Link would probably work fine as a Toon Link alternate model. In fact, didn't someone make a mod that did precisely that with Project M?
Alph makes sense as not being a clone because it's just the Pikmin fighting, and there's no way to change the Pikmin except swapping one of them out for Rock Pikmin.
Dark Pit...eh. I'm fine with his inclusion, but he's easily the clone I see the least of. His differences aren't as obvious as Dr. Mario's or Lucina's, imo. Plus I don't think people generally like Pit's playstyle as much as they do Mario's or Marth's.

Yeah, but it's inconsistent what he chooses to have play different. It's not like Lucina and Alph were just in the game, and he happened to notice that one played differently and one didn't.

I don't care how I just want Dry Bowser any way I can gets him! I expect a few DLC costume changes with him included sometime down the line.
I know the rule, but if he wanted he could have made differences for Alph and create a new character. It's not like Dark Pit differences are huge.
For Dark Samus I mean that she (he, it? have no idea haha) is a slightly different version of Samus just like Dark Pit is a slightly different version of Pit, so both could work as clones.
Really hyped for Dry Bowser coming back to Mario Kart. But why is his DLC (and Isabelle's) in the spring? ;_;
Trying to argue that Dr. Mario is any better than Dark Pit is silly. In fact, Dark Pit is probably more popular than Dr. Mario.
Actually Dark Samus is really different from Samus. Just look at her assist trophy, she's much more agile, floats, shoots really fast, and has Phazon abilities. Making her a clone wouldn't make much sense.

Dark Samus levitates and flies, sprays Phazon, conjures Phazon tentacles, etc.
Similar silhouette, but dramatically different fighting style and abilities.

This is essentially my opinion. Adding modeled alt costumes for characters who didn't receive them would be a nice addition to DLC packs.
It's not part of Project M, just a regular Brawl mod. Still looks pretty good, though.
