Still gutted Hades didn't for this one honestly. Would have been a new addition that I REALLY loved, apart from Villager all the additions are sorta... "eh".
I really love the newcomer selection, but I never thought Hades had too much of a chance. We'll see though, you could definitely make a cool character out of him.

I knew I should have ordered this game earlier, it's sold out on ShopTo. Now I can't get it a day early and have to get it on Friday like a normal person. T_T

That's just a magazine poll. It doesn't represent Japan as a whole. Only the small core group that actually gets the magazine.

I believe it is Famitsu that had that poll, and just by taking a look at some of the games in the "most wanted list" should give you an idea that it only represents the core minority.

I know I'll be alone on this, but if we need to make cuts, I hope third party characters are first on the chopping block. Mega Man, Sonic, Pac-Man are all cool, but if its between them and Nintendo reps like Ice Climbers, Lucas, Mew to, etc ., I'd rather they go.

Gucking phone

If Waluigi ever made it into Smash, who's series would he be representing? He has his closest ties to Wario, but I don't think he's ever actually appeared in any of Wario's games, other then maybe a few references in Wario Ware (I'm not even sure if that's happened). He mostly appears in Mario Sports titles and Mario Party, but never in an actual Mario game, would that still make him a Mario character?

The obvious answer is give to Waluigi his own series.

How would that even work?

Just map all his move animations to Wario's. 'Course he'd need different hitboxes because of the size difference, but I'm sure it could work. We did get Pichu as a Pikachu clone and his structure is a lot stubbier.

Hades design really hurts my eyes. His color distribution looks like it was done by Jackson pollack

This is an issue I also have with Hades. He is a GREAT character, but euuuugh that design.

Bowser Jr./Koopalings represents Bowser's love for technology
Rosalina represents the "Super Mario Galaxy" games
Waluigi would probably represent all the Mario sports games

I like the idea of Bowser Jr., but in execution you are pretty much playing the Koopa Copter with a person driving it with the alts just changing the skin. I rather have Bowser's FS be using the Koopa Copter and Bowser Jr. be actual playable. They could have worked around the alt thing by making the moves what any Koopa Kid could do (shell and wand attacks).
I guess what I am saying is I rather play as Fox/Falco instead of them driving the Landmaster for the whole match.
That's a really disingenuous comparison -- the Landmaster is a giant tank that completely obscures Fox/Falco, but the Clown Car is a tiny bowl with Bowser Jr. exposed and in full view.

Not to mention, Bowser Jr. has been portrayed as some kind of mechanical genius ever since Super Mario Galaxy seven years ago. He rides the Clown Car or a big mech in practically every major game he appears in, and he's a feeble joke character on his own (as shown in the original New Super Mario Bros.). His dependence on the Clown Car is a huge part of his character.

The Tron Bonne/SFXTK Pac-Man "pilot" archetype has been missing from Smash Bros., and I'm glad Bowser Jr. is more than just a smaller Bowser. Having a playable mech character really helps diversify the roster.

I see your point and I can see their logic in it. It is my personal opinion, but I am glad they went with Pac-Man instead of SFXTK "wooden bot" controlled by Pac-Man. In the same vein I rather play just as the Kooplings instead of playing Clown Copter controlled by Kooplings.

I don't think it's just Dark Pit. Majority of Kid Icarus Uprising casts were quite popular along with Japanese audiences. Palutena, Pit, Dark Pit and Viridi were placed in top 15 Nintendo characters if I recalled it right.

Exactly this. I just finished KI: Uprising and the characters were the absolute best about the game. They play off of each other very well.

Mario get's loads of characters because it's Nintendo's mascot series. If any series got a load of characters into Smash it would be Mario.

But Mario hasn't really gotten loads of characters. In fact, he lost a character in Brawl, if we don't count Diddy or Wario (which I don't). Compare that to Pokemon losing 2 in Brawl (one of which was a clone), but gaining 4. This time though Pokemon lost 2, but only gained one, so it evened out for the most part.

Posting this made me realize Charizard and Lucario are the only Pokemon New Comers who have been in more than one game. That's pretty crazy. I think all the Pokemon we have now will be in Smash forever though, no more surprise Mewtwo cuts or switch gimmick appearances or clones to potentially cut.

And sadly, Zelda's roster has been stagnant for 3 games in a row now...

Preach it! Bowser Jr. is now my most-wanted newcomer. :-)

Meh, I consider anyone who can appear in a Mario Kart/Party game to be a Mario Character. Which means they have 11 reps. More than twice as many as the next series, Pokemon and Zelda which both have 5.

Donkey Kong and Mario are like the Avengers and X-Men. They're in the same universe, sometimes they team up to race in go karts or play tennis, but are their own series and their own identity.

I don't consider DK or Diddy to be Mario characters at all.

Wario and Yoshi are more debatable, especially Yoshi. He is honestly lucky Yoshi's Story came out when it did, which probably led to why he was his own series.

Mario lost one character in Brawl, a clone. Wario was added, I count Wario's series as a Mario spin off. He's basically a Mario character.

Zelda's roster has been stagnant for 3 games in a row? Wasn't Toon Link added in Brawl?

Just to confirm, Waluigi has only ever appeared in games like Mario Kart, Mario Party, Boom Street, sports games, and Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games. He's never had a significant playable role in any game.

Though bizarrely, he's playable in Mario Tennis: Power Tour despite Wario not being present at all. In fact, the only other Mario characters are Mario, Luigi, Peach, Bowser, and Donkey Kong.

Toon Link was added in Brawl, but was kinda Young Link's replacement.

Toon Link is Young Link with a new name. If you compare Falco or Ganondorf from Melee to Brawl, they're as different as Young Link is to Toon Link.

Toon Link gaining Fire Arrows as a custom in a game with plenty of other Melee custom moves nods, just cements it.

I never thought as Toon Link as anything other than Young Link. Young Link is a 3 game vet.

Time to repost my favourite fan theory about Waluigi:

Toon Link is Young Link with a new name.

Yeah, I guess that's true. I prefer Toon Link to Young Link, anyway.

Not really. Sure, Wario appears in the Mario "event" games, but so does Donkey Kong, and sometimes even Diddy Kong, yet you certainly wouldn't say the Kongs are basically Mario characters. And like the Kongs, Wario has his own series of games that are wholly seperate from the Mario franchise. And his primary costume in the Smash Bros. series is even his Wario Ware biker outfit, which distances him from Mario even further.

I'd definitely argue that Yoshi is a Mario character though. Yoshi frequently appears in mainline Mario platformers, Baby Mario plays a big role in the Yoshi franchise, and many of the enemies, objects, and collectibles in Yoshi games are straight from the Mario games.

Agree completely. Wario is pretty removed from mario nowadays. Yoshi is so heavily ingrained in Mario that even spinoffs that focus on him sometimes include Mario characters and a few mario enemies. I have no idea why Sakurai gave him his own icon. It's like saying Luigi deserves his own icon because of Luigi's mansion being a thing

Yoshi only has his own series because Yoshi's story was released a little bit before Smash and was popular. Nintendo was probably planning on spinning Yoshi off into a series without Mario, but never really went for it.

Had Yoshi not been in 64, and was added in Melee, he's almost certainly be a Mario character.

Donkey Kong would never be under the Mario umbrella. And especially not Diddy. If DKC wasn't a thing, he would have represented the arcade and game boy game and we'd have Jr instead of Diddy, but he'd still be his own series in Smash.

Wario probably would have been had WarioWare not taken off, but who really knows, maybe we'd be looking at a full WarioLand style Wario in Smash (with its own series icon) if Wario Ware wasn't popular or didn't exist at all.

You realize that Sonic Boom is only a Western spin-off, with regular Modern Sonic (the one in Smash 4) still existing in Sonic Team-made games, right?

The joke wasn't me saying Sonic Boom is a permanent change, but that the game looks terrible.

I think Sonic will comeback though, he's one of the better 3rd party faces on Nintendo platforms. Whether or not his hate force wants to admit it or not. A guest character returning twice is already extremely uncommon.

Well given that Sonic Boom turns out bad, Sega will just drop Big Red Button. Problem solved.

But yeah, Sonic returning is a good sign for his chances for returning in future Smash games.

I don't think we can say that, given we only had two guest characters in the past, one being Sonic who stayed, and the other being Snake whose circumstances were different (It was a favor to Kojima from Sakurai since they're friends). Sonic always made sense as a third party choice and he represents the rivalry they used to have with Sega, so he's definitely tied a lot to Nintendo history. Snake has almost nothing to do with Nintendo, and relatively speaking wasn't as deserving as characters like Megaman who had a long history with Nintendo. Next smash, the only third party from the 3ds and wii u iterations I could see leaving is Pacman, because his history with Nintendo isn't THAT strong (although far stronger than Snakes, IMO) and because him getting in was probably influenced in part by the partnership to create Smash U and 3DS

I think the issue is more that Waluigi with Wario's moveset would make no sense at all. Waluigi has never been portrayed as having a bike, or being flatulent, and a bite move would look stupid.

So D1 made an excellent Facebook post about Melee vs Smash 4 and toxicity and the like.

Gotta say, I'm not really familiar with competitive players in general but the positive attitude he and Prog have been encouraging since the invitational is quite swell.
