The Order:1886 "won't have QTE's every 3-4 minutes, will make them compelling"

Ryse is actually a good game though, so that might not necessarily be a bad thing. However, this game seems to lack the action, vibrant graphics, and ideal setting for an interesting game. Those things made the clunky controls of Ryse manageable. All I see in The Order is bumbling, stumbling, and a ton of smog. It'll be a good watch on YouTube with all the gameplay removed and all the cut scenes played in sequence.

What? Lacks the action, vibrant graphics, and ideal setting for an interesting game? What does that even mean? I find this setting far more interesting than ancient Rome. That doesn't mean I'd say Ryse's setting makes for an uninteresting game. I find the graphics nicer looking than Ryse. We know very little about the action, not that games that aren't heavy on action aren't interesting like you seem to imply.

I think you're projecting beyond GAF. I have some anecdotal evidence behind that claim buy I'm willing to wager there's a massive difference in opinion between GAF and more casual gamers.

and most casual gamers like cinematic gameplay and QTEs..

That still doesn't make it good.

I won't look down on the game just yet because we really don't know how many QTE's there are, but if they're handled well (And that's a big if) then I won't mind.

If it's a QTE for drinking the vial and that makes an impact later on then I'm fully ok with that.

If it's a QTE to finish a boss fight then that's poor implementing.

We've had QTEs since the SNES era and suddenly now it's really cool to hate on them even existing in any form? Don't all jump the bandwagon at once, guys.

Lol hive mind has set in. Smh

Do you think it's possible that a number of people who play the games featuring QTEs could be similarly annoyed by their implementation? Or that comments here specify ways they do and don't work in action games?

I first thought this game would be the PS4's Ryse. Good looking yet devoid of good gameplay. Now im thinking it will be even worse.

Still hoping for a good game

But they need to show some decent footage and fast :/

lol why? This game will come out in early 2015. Enough time to polish the shit out of it. And there are many other games to concentrate on first. DriveClub, TLOU:R, LBP3 just to name a few. I don't expect to see any new footage till the end of christmas.

That "press triangle to drink life water" QTE... was it ever clarified if that QTE was an actual choice (because the black water seems to be a risk/reward type thing)? If not, that is laughably embarrassing.

Assuming there's no choice, why is it embarassing? The alternative is to look at him drinking the black water.
Same for the shooting against the monster, I've read many complains. Can we fail or not? Assuming the latter, what's the alternative? Again, to look at him shooting.
There are 2 alternatives: look at the cutscene while we scratch our balls or play it (interact with it, to be precise). I'd pick the second option everytime is possible.
Of course, I'm talking about cutscenes here. Deep and long gameplay sessions aren't an optional.

Great, QTE's every 5 minutes then

I feel like this game went from insane hype to no one caring at all.

They really need to show the game well, E3 made it seem like crap.

While I was never really hyped for the game (More on the fence) I went back to watch the 2013 trailer, I think it was the concept looked incredible with a lot of potential, and in a lot of people's eyes, they went the wrong way with that potential. I still expect it to be a good game, but just not what people expected from the initial trailer if that makes any sense

Yeah people opening a door, like in a lot of game, you know, pressing -put button here- to open it. Are you really complaining about that? Unbelievable. Before entering in a the order thread i already know that someone will invent a new way to criticize the game.

TLoU had QTE's, I barely even noticed it. QTE's have their use.

I think The Order will be much better than people expect, a lot of people seem to jump at the worst possible conclusion anytime something of the game is shown.

This, it's not doing anything different than other top rated/loved games on NeoGAF are doing. Sure it's not particularly ground breaking ( let's see how those soft body physics turn out), but if it's solid it doesn't have to be.

I feel the same. People here are complaining about ending a boss with them. Why is that bad? Alternative is finishing the boss, then watching the cutscene of a final stab. With QTE you at least get some interactivity out of it like Freeman said. People are complaining that the game is too "filmic", and then are complaining that there are gonna be QTEs instead of cutscenes to do the epic/cool stuff that you can't do during normal gameplay in ANY game.

and most casual gamers like cinematic gameplay and QTEs..
That still doesn't make it good.
You have just about as much proof for that claim as I do, I think. Actually, I think you need to redo your whole post. I guarantee I'm reading it wrong. Or did you just throw all of QTE and "Cinematic gameplay" under the bus?
GAF will be right back on board around release.
That's what I assume. It's why I'd decided a while ago to not even worry about it. Y'all're gonna come round eventually, again.

But that's people's fault not RADs. We should wait and see what vision the devs have for their game before shitting on it.

I dont really see pushing a button to open a door as a QTE. I've heard it all before. They never work out well. I expect this branching path pitch to be

Path A - succeed
Path B - death animation

Would love to be surprised but I have more respect for games that use them as a last resort, or not at all.

I think it's supposed to be a bit like Heavy Rain's system.

and most casual gamers like cinematic gameplay and QTEs..

Doesn't make it bad either.

Always great to see a form of "the lowest common denominator likes it so it's okay" argument.

Makes me wonder about the games that have been cancelled while this game made it through to the latter stages of development.

Game reminds me of RYSE, not got much interest in it but will see how reviews/comments about it are.

I'm fine with a lot of QTEs. But pressing triangle to continue the single path action of drinking a tonic in a cutscene has to be among of the most contrived instances of a QTE I've seen in the current game space.

"Press square to lean on the bookshelf. Press O to touch your wound and look at it."

Pressing triangle to drink something and halting the action until you do so is just as dumb. These kinds of QTEs make no sense to me.

No kidding, Sony has fucked up every single opportunity to make this game seem good. E3 was the chance to get a lot of people excited and they blew it.

Don't fuck this game up, Sony. You too, RAD.

Kind of worried for this game, the E3 video was less than interesting as everything that happened in it was so utterly predictable, right down to the black out ending.

I was really hoping for a Victorian RE4 type of game.

Really I just don't know what its trying to be

It's trying to appeal to everyone from, like, a market research perspective (you like to shoot things from cover right? you like to fight the monsters and do the big violent QTE right?) which means it will inevitably turn game-literate people off when the derivative elements are revealed.

I think the E3 demo did a great job hyping the game up. I watched the Sony conference in theatres, and the demo did pretty good at blowing the people in the theater away, including myself. It looked like a graphical powerhouse, and oozed of atmosphere in the first two-ish minutes of the gameplay before the lycan introduction.

I'm pretty excited about the game, as I honestly doubt the entire game will play like the introductory Lycan sequence.

This. Most seem to think that QTEs replace gameplay, when in actuality they replace cutscenes. I'd rather interact with the game during a scene than stare at it and watch everything happen.

You should have seen the other threads lol. I don't know what the hell happened there, but it just kept on going.

Yes, I saw them.

I must admit there are a lot of good posts anyway, it's just a matter of focusing on the good side of this forum, even if sometime it's pretty hard because of some impolite, gross ad ignorant posts.

exactly. Everything I've seen of The Order 1886, has been exciting and awesome! I don't concern myself with all the negative comments about it. Watch Dogs got a ton, and it broke records in sales for Ubisoft. Call of Duty continues to get negative comments, and they continue to break records in sales. The Order 1886 is gonna be another hit for San Monica Studios! I pre ordered the premium edition the day it was announced! :)

game went from day 1 purchase to gamefly rental after the E3 video.

That's quite a switch between two complete extremes.

Going from a day 1 purchase on a game that didn't promise you anything with no gameplay shown, to a rental based on 3 minutes of footage.

I know AAA game pre-release hazing is a time-honored tradition but I'm getting weary of the hyperbole.

it's a sony game -> expect good thing about cinematographic / art aspect but acceptable / mediocre thing when it comes to video game specifict (ia, level design , interactivity)

No one is disputing the visuals and atmosphere....

People are disputing the actual gameplay, because everything we have seen in that department is lacklustre

Gameplay reveal to press

Pretty visuals

Shoot bangs

Press triangle to melee

twitch stream

More shoot bangs

Pretty visuals

Press x to drag

Press triangle to open door

E3

Slow build up

Atmosphere

Werewolf

On rails back up sequence?

Press triangle to drink

Erratic shoot bangs

This is all we have seen of the order

Look at all the QTE's needed to complete this completely scripted sequence of combat. Lol modern game design right guys?

While i can understand the angst that some people have about the overuse of QTE in the past, there is not enough known/seen yet to make any judgement about the extent of QTE in games.

Personally i don't mind QTE's and while games that do use it to great effect are rare, there are still some i believe that are being made today that use QTE events well (Shippuden Ultimate Ninja Storm series)

What is it about this game that brings out the hate everytime? Lots of good games have QTEs, as long as they're not stupid like the ones in Tomb Raider, it should not be a problem.

Under 50% is a resounding NO?
Compared to the 10% who wanted them as is, not in a reduced quantity or as an option? Yes.

The majority of Sony's games are not cinematic games.

So what you're saying it's gonna be another mediocre game from Sony? Boy, I love mediocre games! /sarcasm.

...jesus
