Jason Momoa cast as Aquaman in Batman v Superman DoJ

This seems like weird casting at first but then I thought about how he would fit into the movie's universe and how DC desperately wants to place Aquaman as the League's resident badass.

I tthink it's gonna work really well in action, and I'll always have my blonde Arthur in the comics.

TThere's no way these guys are gonna be anything more than cameos at the end of the movie though. If the rumored schedule is to be believed, this is essentially Part 1 of the JL movie.

exactly. this is going to be the messiest movie ever. no lead in with character building movies, just comic book splooge

Watchmen
X-Men
X-Men First Class
The Incredibles
Mystery Men
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Just a few example of team-up comic-book movies that didn't need "lead-in" movies to actually be movies.

In fact, looking at the list, I'd suggest the chances of your movie being recieved well actually GO UP when you just START by giving the audience credit for accepting the idea that multiple superheroes exist in a single universe and having them roll with that.

I remember when Days of Future Past was going to be the most bloated incomprehensible goofy mess that ever existed in film history.

It was two months ago. Before anyone saw the movie :)

Hitflix confirmed that he's not going to have a major role in the movie so we should stop throwing around "bloated" and all those same posts that happen with every announcement related to this movie

The Marvel formula isn't the only way to approach a shared universe

no no, let's ignore this and continue thinking how every hero in this movie is going to have to have an hour of screentime each.

I can see how a Cyborg (or rather, Victor Stone) cameo would work, but Aquaman?
There's an older rumor that he's created by the Indian Ocean event, not part of an ancient hidden people... but even if the latter, he gets the same handwave that the Amazons will get.

I'm starting to think people calling this movie "messy" are just haters that have nothing else to go on.

They're making a Justice League movie guys, innocent until proven guilty. C'mon, do you guys seriously have no hope for anything anymore?

I just hope they work in this line.

This is going to be fucking awesome.

Fuck pretty boy blonde guys, I want an angry Hawaiian looking Aquaman. With dreads.

Even Batman wouldn't laugh at Momoa.

Unless Snyder/Terrio/Goyer are going to do a major time jump and largely handwave away the events of MoS - which, actually, I would be fine with but am definitely not expecting - I don't see how that has anything to do with BvS or what it's seemingly trying to do.

As far as we know, it's a direct sequel to a film that did nothing to establish superheroes or superpowers as preexisting concepts, and established no in-universe basis for superpowers other than being a Kryptonian. It's not at all comparable to any of the films you mention, in which the existence of superheroes is a long-established part of that universe (Incredibles, Watchmen), or there's a one-size-fits-all explanation for superpowers (X-Men), or the characters are introduced more or less simultaneously and have a shared origin (TMNT).

There's an older rumor that he's created by the Indian Ocean event, not part of an ancient hidden people... but even if the latter, he gets the same handwave that the Amazons will get.

I have no idea what Aquaman's role in BvS will be (if the "older rumor" is true, why even bother using him?), but it sounds like WW's role is too large for the Amazons to be limited to a handwave, even if their role is limited to a single flashback scene or expository monologue.

Terrible pick. Momoa is badass but Aquaman is not a good fit. Then again, it's been one odd casting choice after another with this film. Also, Dawn of Justice is still lame.

looks like passing on drax worked out well for him though which is good.

i don't really think he's an amazing actor but he's on that fine line between pretty-boy and intimidating as fuck. he pulls of both well, which bodes nicely for the character perhaps

I think origin movies are played out. Yes I know there will be new characters and origins that we haven't seen yet, but I'm over origin movies.
I'm all for this new approach of having a team up movie then branching out for solo movies.

I want Arrow to be part of the movie universe but unless the Flash show is a huge success I don't think it will be. Warners is probably going to want a bigger star to play Flash.

Oof. Awful choice. I made the mistake of watching his new show the other day, and he's got no charisma outside of that schmarmy look he always has on his face.

I'm really not getting the whole "movie is gonna be bloated" argument.

Didn't X-Men 1 prove that a movie with a huge cast can be done?

Nikolaj Coster-Waldau was my pick, so they got the show right, at least. :p

He's not a very good actor but if they make Aquaman the strong silent type and give him cool special FX it'll be fine.
Strong and silent is usually Aquaman's thing.

People keep talking about the Nu52 version being angry all the time, but I hope the film also gets the part of that incarnation that's also a pretty nice and funny guy.

This is a huge break for Jason's career, congrats to him.

Buy why is this movie not called justice league?
Justice League comes after.

Let the blonde hair thing go. Jeez >.>

You'd think people never heard of wigs.

And First Class and DoFP.

And BONUS! These characters are actually known properties and don't need any explanation. Hit the ground running, you're the FUCKING JUSTICE LEAGUE.

Just because a bunch of other heroes are appearing in the movie does not mean they'll be there the entire time. They could just appear in a scene or two at the end. Maybe a montage of the team forming.

The cynicism towards DC is really annoying.

Mamoa is a good choice. Even if he doesn't look like Aquaman with blond hair and white skin he can pull off a good physique.

Now DC needs to get the Rock as Martian Manhunter and Idris Elba or ‎Chiwetel Ejiofor as Green Lantern

agreed. I like that they're basically doing the opposite of marvel.

Hit the ground running, you're the FUCKING JUSTICE LEAGUE.

That was more or less the approach of the scrapped Justice League: Mortal, which was set in its own continuity and began with the entire team as established superheroes (though not yet really a team, though some of the characters knew each other). Doesn't really work for a sequel to MoS, unless there's either a decent time jump in which Superman inspired the emergence of a bunch of new superheroes, or a fair amount of handwaving ("oh, Batman, Cyborg, Wonder Woman, and Aquaman were all operating as superheroes years before you, Superman. We just didn't see why that mattered when you were fighting Zod.")

As a decided non-fan of MoS, I don't particularly care how much BvS "respects" its continuity, and would be fine with either of those options. But I don't expect either to happen. I expect instead that every superhero introduced (save Batman) will be treated as a new character and will thus have to have their origin/backstory explained to some degree, in Justice League if not BvS.

See my post above. The size of the cast is not in itself a problem; the nature of the characters and the universe they inhabit is.

That's because you're use to the Marvel way of doing things.

This is how things could work: Batman is more of a myth outside of Gotham. Aquaman stayed underwater running his kingdom until that machine fucked up some of it. Wonder Woman has been living like a regular human for few years. Flash isn't the Flash yet. Green Lantern can easily be explained as someone that was off world since most of his job happens in space.

This whole "They didn't establish the universe" is bullshit when you realize Man of Steel is about a alien that came to earth. That right there explains this universe has more fantastical elements in it. Not to mention the little Easter eggs planted through Man of Steel.

Probably just a cameo like Cyborg, WB securing all these actors because JL movie is going to be released a year after BvS.

Rock as John Stewart would be kind of cool, I don't see WB using Idris Elba since he is Heimdall in Thor.

John Stewart can be explained in a couple of sentences like Hal Jordan was promoted in the GL corps, and now the Guardians chose John Stewart as the Green Lantern of sector 2814 (Earth). Done. No need to make another origin story for GL.
