New DriveClub gameplay videos (IGN)

To be honest I don't quite understand why there would be unexpected road-blocks to uploading the original footage, at least over the time-frame we're talking about here. If anything there would be fewer steps to putting out the uncompressed capture, bandwidth concerns aside.

My goodness. Stopped in to check the thread for the first time today and people acting like evo murdered their children. embarrassing.

Agreed.

The same 2

Thank you kind GAFer.

It's the same IGN footage. There should be no slack given. I find it hard to believe the devs have to do something extra special to get high res footage of their own games. They have the most amazing cuts already...they have the actual game there.

Even if it were new footage. How long would it take them to record a five minute race, record it and release the file for download. Not long....they (whoever the hold up is) just need to get their ish together.

Wow. You're gonna burst a capillary dude. Chill mang! The wait can be fun too. So long as you don't hold the belief that they're personally hazing you by allegedly withholding the footage.

And what makes you think it's Evo not holding their end of the bargain and not SCEE?

I, and I quote, stated "whoever the hold up is." In reply to the person I quoted....I don't believe it takes that long to get recorded footage onto the internet. Even if it's new footage.

That comment wasn't nearly as serious as you may have read it....I could have made it a little more elegant, but eh : )

Well that is a legitimate relief! Why not kill time? What in your opinion was the most impressive part of the IGN videos? For me it was the lighting hands down! Can't wait to see it in HD!

Agreed, but you know there are a lot of children here :) you know how they react. To bad no one punishes them :)

Lighting. I'm a lighting junkie myself. The new COD (for the first time ever) looks like I'd legit want to pick it up (rental) because I want to experience that lighting. MLB The Show...dat lighting.

The original Splinter Cell....whoa that lighting. Visually...it's probably my most important/favorite aspect of games to me.

I'm killin time playing NBA2k14....they did a ton of crap poor in this game...lighting wasn't one of them.

The handling of this game has been terrible.. This isn't the first time Evolution have said they're going to release footage and left their audience hanging.

Cut them some slack. Probably ensuring they get the most amazing cut of this footage. Assuming it will be new footage of course.

Will it be new footage? Or the same two races in 1080P?

No slack when they do this again and again. Are you telling us that a giant company like Sony and a big dev like Evo can't get 1080p footage of their own game easily?? Either release proper videos or just stay the shut up and release when you are ready. I don't even know what causes them to release bad quality videos of a race? This is not a trailer where you need to edit and produce something. This is straight up recording a video of a race and they still screw it up. Also don't make deals with a media outlet who would put out your game video in the worst quality possible. I wouldn't even blame IGN for that. As a studio it's your job to make sure that your game is represented in the best way possible.

Game looks great but am I the only one a bit annoyed that the car headlamps are just this broad swath of light instead of the clean cut off HID line that virtually all cars with projector headlamp housings emit? (at least all of the luxury/exotics I've seen at night)

Dan son you are all about that lighting!

The night-day transitions in Driveclub is so exciting for me. For me it will add so much replay value to this game. Constantly replaying the tracks to see each from all daylight/'weather' options. There will be challenges that focus on time of day too I'm sure.

Hype!

you won't see a really realistic reflection model even next gen.

there is more than one type of reflection. what we have seen in recent high end games like KZSF and SS is that developers mix them together to create a more adequate approximation of reality without crippeling performance to much.

as far as i understand there are three types of reflection methods used in gaming to date:

1.) cube maps - basically a 3dimensional screenshot (in the simplest case a cube) that is reflected in one layer of the reflective material.

mainly used reflection method in previous gens.

pros: not very taxing

cons: not a very accurate approximation of a reflection. cube maps have been very low res last gen, so you wouldn't necessary notice. they are becoming rather high res nowadays, what makes mismatching reflection directions very obvious.

2.) screen space reflection - imagine the reflective surface is a ingame tv with a integrated webcam that allways films the opposite angle you are watching it.

used in stuff like ingame mirrors. sometimes in fluid surfaces like puddles

pros:
-adequate simulation of directional reflections

cons:
- kinda taxing, because the game has to render more than just the players field of view but also the reflections "field of view"
- not really good on not flat surfaces, because with only one "virtual camera" you wont get the directionality right anymore. with a lot cameras it gets unbelivable taxing

3.) specular reflection - imitating the reflection of light rays of a surface with the option of incorporating the specific surface properties (as you see in PBS).

this is the closest approximation of how our sight in reality works

pros:
- perfect directional representation on any surface with any form
- reflective properties of a material can change with the viewing angle (in PBS)

cons:
- is only as good as the lighting system used in game
- the more elaborate the lighting system (extensive indirect lighting) the more taxing the reflection gets

examples:

specular reflections in killzone:

kz1egkc5.png

^ the blue light the flying robot thingy is carrying reflects factoring in the reflection, transmission and refraction proporites of the floor

kz2uljeu.png

^ sepcular reflection under different angles and material proporties

specular reflections in infamous:

infamz2kcm.png

the roof material reflects the sun light. where the signs blocks the rays path the reflective properties of the material change.

drive club:

what we are seeing here must be a specular reflection of the back lights in the other cars paint material. we also see the whole back of the maserati reflecting on the others cars side, which most likely means that that has to be a specular reflection of bounce light. what would be mighty impressive and unseen in any other racing game.

discalimer: i have no idea what im talking about. done a bit of CG in the late 90ies and have no knowledge on realtime graphics whatsoever.

Thanx for your insights into this matter. This is more than I knew so great post. Maybe something that I was nitpicking honestly and it wont really bother me at all just wondering when 1:1 reflections would be realistic by.

You were all out of action...

SMH if this shit doesn't get released today I will be fucking pissed. I've always been the one to cut devs some slack but honestly, Evolution I've had enough of this. You tell us Driveclub news in the weeks to come and it takes months. You delay the game for almost a full year and then tell us you only have 50 cars...And now you guys can barely get a high quality video of your own game out...

This is some bullshit!

Honestly at this point, just forget drive club exists and look forward to other games that are doing their job in informing their consumers and showing off content. Just wait till Oct 7th, where we will all get a chance to play the game for free. No point in stressing over something you can't control.

Almost everything from second and third point is incorrect so don't quote that post ever.

Either some disaster befell them, in which case I'm glad Chris managed to get his twitter access back online. Or they had something else to do, in which case don't bloody say you'll put media out then, when your interested but waning audience is looking forward to them.

Out of action? What is that supposed to mean?

"Hay guys, we will have something Monday at 18:00! "
Monday comes,
"oh yeah. right, we were out of action and whatever... we will get on that ASAP seriously."

ASAP is the new Soon.

That would be pretty decent if they have challenges based on time of day, but I wonder how they'll make that work. Like is it harder to race at night, certain corners etc.

As for the weather, I'm not holding my breath on that one. I wonder how long this game will be updated after release and how far along weather is/if/when it could be patched into the game.

lol this is really funny am not even mad
There is one thing i know for sure; People actually love DriveClub! i don't see any other gaming community demanding HQ videos form the devs just so they can fall in love with the game even more not one time i remember any Killzone fan or Infamous asking for HQ videos, the youtube videos were enough but not for DriveClub community :)
