New DriveClub gameplay videos (IGN)

So we're stuck with garbage quality vids.....

Talk about shitting on a steak dinner.
Indeed. It's verging on pointless to release stuff like this. Particularly for gameplay footage. Fair enough, chuck the motion graphics stuff and cinematic trailers on YouTube, but if you want people to see how the game actually looks in realtime, you HAVE to offer very high quality encodes.

I mean... if the game actually looked like these videos on your TV, you'd think your TV was broken.

It's more like PGR and Ridge Racer than sims or outlandish arcade games.
There is a good reason those games aren't being made any more, and the last studio that did a similar game (Blur) went bankrupt. Only "Need for Speed" survives, and that's due to the name, just like COD, and being part of EA, plus they've gone open world as well.

Needs more epic arcadey drifting, racing seemed a bit dull. Honestly though, neither of those two videos was particularly interesting or exciting, I think Sony/Evo is doing a dreadfully poor job at selling this game.

I think so too. Looks as good as a new gen game should but the actual racing and track looked kind of mundane. I'm wondering why they chose those tracks because they don't look that thrilling to race. Wish they'd included something iconic or breathtaking.

Real-time/non-baked reflections are out? Can't see the car or sparks reflected in the .gif. There was also a part in the video with some flying birds that were absent in the reflection.

Hard to tell in that GIF but on the Zonda dash segment it definitely reflected cars

It's real-time.
The car and sparks weren't close enough to be reflected at the point of impact.
You can see the car entering the field of reflection right at the end when as they entered the bridge.

Scratch that, I think I see the car now.
THe car appears in the reflection. Just the edge of it, look carefully.

This is the crappiest quality video I've seen in a while on YouTube. You can see the compression artifacts EVERYWHERE! Every once in a while there's like a second or two without terrible compression where you can actually see how great the game looks, otherwise if you're trying to see what this game will really look like you should probably wait for better videos.

The car is properly reflected on the hood to the right, and with the proper lighting no less. The less light on an object the less it will be reflected.

Microsoft employee I spar with on Efnet frequently RE: the new footage:

<MS Employee> i dont think it looks that good
<MS Employee> has to be a bad video
<MS Employee> to me forza looks much better
<Krakn3dfx> shocker
* Krakn3dfx sits down
<Krakn3dfx> have to take in this revelation

They seem too far away to be reflected on the hood?.

man i was kinda hoping to come around on liking this, but im out. still looks pretty and boring, kinda like infamous for me except i wouldve bought infamous if i had a ps4 just for the graphics.

If you took a screenshot of the game, and showed it to me, I would say it looks kinda ugly.

But there is something about the game when you see it in motion....

I can't put my finger on it. Something about it looks really fucking good.

Yeah, my apologies people. Watched it a few times and couldn't see it, watched a few more and it's definitely there!

Looks incredibly boring, it has nothing over a sim racer in terms of over the topness, yet not a sim racer.

There's a lot going on in these videos.

The dynamic lighting, headlights reflecting in cars in front, and cars behind you reflecting on your rear bumper.

Reflections on the car from the surrounding environment and from other cars.

The real-time shadows.

Yeah that's pretty nice, I think they'll be using screen space ray marching like Killzone, Crysis 2 etc.

It's the lighting. Nothing is pre-baked. It's all generated at run time.

Those headlight shadows are great, subtle yet feel natural.
I notice a lot of aliasing on reflection hope they can fix that.

I think that's actually a wavy paint reflection effect that, if you look at car reflections up close, is actually quite realistic. Many cars have small subsurface irregularities all over that keep reflections from looking razor sharp. This looks more like that than it looks like low res reflections to me.

I love the headlight shadows. Each headlight seems to be treated as an individual shadow casting light source which is really cool. I believe pCars just does one light source for the whole front.

The more I see of this gen, the less impressive it appears. This doesn't really strike me as particularly great at all. I'm guessing it's native 1080 which is something I guess. I must confess that it doesn't seem all that better than last gen, especially considering it's not even running at 60fps. Maybe seeing it in real life and not on shitty youtube clips will change my mind.. But I'm not going to hold my breath. Fuck I miss the Dreamcast times, the visual jump back then was fucking mind blowing.

Looks so good, why do this and project cars have to be releasing so close together, i want them both so bad, i need clean pants after watching those videos

im gonna go with a prediction that if the next Horizon comes out at the same time as this that it will shit all over this game in terms of fun factor.

I've got a feeling that when Horizon comes out you'll say it shits all over this game in terms of the fun factor. Just a prediction.

I am sure it's IGN. They have horrible video quality, even 1080p Youtube shouldn't look so compressed.

Fast moving racing games are super hard to compress, it's not far from the worst possible type of footage to compress in fact. A (2500? 3000? whatever) bitrate for Ful HD simply isn't going to cut it.

I think it's a combination of the two - a wavy paint effect to disguise the resolution of the reflection somewhat. In any case it's good enough. The aliasing on overhead cables and the like is far more distracting to me.

Thankfully they have the PS+ edition to see if I can get interested. Not a huge fan of realistic racers but I'm curious to see the quality of this.

Needs to be 8000 minimum if we're uploading HD.....and that's still low.

I think mundane is the right word to describe the game for now. The game could be awesome and actually driving could feel great, but for me that's not coming across in the footage they've released. Rushy is a cool dude and visually the game looks pretty, but these vids aren't doing it for me. The other two vids explaining the systems in the game are just terrible. Why use those low-rent flash animations instead of footage from the dynamic menu and actual racing challenges and whatnot? It's baffling.

I reckon you managed to scratch your webm itch?

I certainly did. Now I'm just waiting on some direct feed Bamersyde footage.

Dat last webm

Yeah, it's pretty great to see the driver react to the collision too. The cockpit views are pretty fantastic as well.

And the lighting and reflections are just stunning. Really impressive what they've pulled off, 30fps was absolutely the right decision after these videos. They've nailed the feeling of speed when you're in cockpit/bonnet view and the motion is pretty top notch too.

can gamersyde save us?

We definitely need some direct feed footage.

It looks pretty good visually, but when it comes to gameplay it seems to be exactly the kind of racing I don't usually care about; constant brakes in the speed, instead of keeping the pedal to the medal the arcade way, and using your vehicle to push others from the way. It just seems boring to me. Also the flatness of the tracks is a downer.
