Infamous: Second Son Review Thread

Briefness? The game is 15 hours, and can be played again as good or evil, which will have significant impact on story and gameplay.

Tomorrow's patch adds 5 hours of additional content.

Well guys, thanks for making a college student even more broke lol.

Polygon gives it a good review
Sessler pulls a Sessler
The thread suddenly became about Titanfall

Let's burn this thread down Pookie!

Empty, lifeless city. Boring missions. Generic characters with bad voice acting. Awful graphics and ever worse frame rate.

So there you have it. What good games are supposed to have, this game has not.

That right there is subjective, and also, framerate averaged around 30fps in the end. Yes there were dips, but it was running about 30 at times to.

Here is my subjective take on it.

I personally didn't experience many dips. The game had good gameplay, the side missions were repetitive but the story missions were well made. The powers and traversal were cool, the boss fights were good. The overall story was good as well. Also had some great platforming sections. Graphics were passable for its time, especially for open world.

A good game in the end.

Were people expecting this game to get 10s and 9s across the board? I enjoyed Infamous 1 and 2, but they definitely had their flaws and were somewhat derivative. Everything we've seen of Infamous: SS makes it look like it will have the same gameplay with a new coat of paint. If you liked 1 and 2, then go buy this one, but don't expect a game with the same formula of games that averaged an 8/10 to suddenly get praised as the GOTY. And seriously, these reviews aren't that bad.

I think a lot of this overreaction is based on Sony fans putting all their hopes on this game being the first system seller for the PS4. But really, does it need one? The console is selling in record amounts, and you really shouldn't get worked up over whether or not more people will buy a product that you have no investment in. I'll never get the obsession with review scores. Just buy the fucking game and enjoy it.

An 8 is not an average score, a 6 is an average score with a 7 being an above average/borderline good score. Jesus christ people.

That's what they say, but in my experience, an 8 tends to feel like an average game. To each their own, sir.

edit: and as far as AAA games go, im pretty sure that 8's do crop up the most.

What's with Edge and Eurogamer scores almost always being the same?

I'm not trying to suggest something, I trust them both more than most, but it's something I've noticed.

They have the same editorial line. Actually, it's one of the few gaming sites to have an editorial line at all.

well they said it was boring, and repetitive, also they just patched in five more hours of it, which may have helped reviews considering how side missions were cited as a weak point

Paper Trail is not 5 hours of day one content. It's being rolled out across six weeks.

Ps4 major exclusives:

Infamous second son: 81
Killzone: shadow fall : 73
Knack: 54

Kind of surprised still at the KZ reviews. Having finished the campaign last month, I enjoyed the switch from intense warfare combat to a more half-life inspired variation of exploration and light puzzles. The feel was a bit off and many disliked the story, but the core game was gorgeous and each level offered something entirely new, a nice change from the shooting gallery of the older games(and I enjoyed KZ2/3 a lot). Did miss the 'heft' of gunplay though and enemies died too quickly outside of a few lategame heavies. Not nearly as awful as I was led to believe.

ok, realize im off-topic here but

http://www.salon.com/2014/03/07/the_grand_budapest_hotel_wes_andersons_bittersweet_historical_candy/

here's a movie review from Salon with no score, but yes RT and Metacritic list a score for it, i dont get this.
On the risk of spinning off vague platitudes, I'll say that I think it comes down to the fact that society as a whole has marginalized actual content in the pursuit of aesthetics and speed. UIs need to be snappier, layouts have to be more intuitive, and content needs to be summarized, so you spend as little time as you have to. Obviously, the furthest reduction you can possibly achieve of an opinion on a gradient, is a number/score.

That's all there is to it.

I felt like the side stuff in Both Infamous 1 and 2 was among the weakest part of the game (boring, repetitive, extremely low quality NPC's in the first game).

That's what they say, but in my experience, an 8 tends to feel like an average game. To each their own, sir.

I agree with you, the metrics used doesn't reflect the content in the reviews or the quality of games. 8 feels like an average game even though an 8 should mean great game.

this is exactly what i predicted. reviews in line with the previous games. the game has looked like a very refined infamous game for a while now (great thing, imo, as a fan of the series). i'm still very excited, as i loved infamous 2 when i beat it this past year.

That's probably because you have predisposed your mind to feel that way.

This quote from Euroagamer irritates me: "As pretty and playable as it is, in no sense is inFamous: Second Son a post-Grand Theft Auto 5 open-world game"

I hated GTAV, so how is this a negative in my case? Do all games that aren't sidescrollers have to have tons of filler crap around an open world now? Is that the new standard? Man, I sure hope not.

Hey, look! A thread filled with people fighting to the death about imaginary numbers...

I have a love/hate relationship with these review threads. While it's always great to have a first post with all the review links in one place, reading the posts that follow is an exercise in frustration if I've ever seen one...

Considering they’ve both come out within a week of each other, and are both the highest profile post-launch exclusives for their respective consoles, it’s very hard not to compared Titanfall with inFamous: Second Son

Actually, it's very very easy not to compare them since, you know, they're completely different genres!

the whole game could lose the entire superhero angle with very little change to either the gameplay or story.

Come on, the entire story revolves around super powers and being either a hero or a villain, it's what the infamous series has always been about.

These silly points among others just make me question these sites. Metro has been known to be off the mark before.

It's nice to see reviewers trying to use the score range more this gen, hopefully leads to fewer stupid scores like last gen. Having said that, 81 average is great. Not that I give two shits about the opinions of the video gaming press, gaf impressions hold a much larger sway with me.

I think the 7-10 scale is fine for most games, because a truly bad game is pretty rare these days....like objectively bad....games cost too much to be genuinely terrible anymore, at worst a current/previous gen game is boring with a few bad games in the mix

Seems like good reviews. First generation games are hard to nail. I have no doubt SP will consolidate what they learned into their next game. It's a great start.

Reading the reviews shows that its a good game, a game that plays very similar to the older Infamous games (like it should) so if you liked the other Infamous games then you will like Infamous: SS and thats all there is to it really.
There is no need for all this overreaction.

I'm not bothered by the scores themselves I'm more concerned about the shortness of the game. I'm sorry but in a day and age where there are games that have 100+ hours of re-playability, paying full price for a short experience makes no sense at all. Add the fact that many places are selling this game for MORE than the usual price and you have a "no way" from me.

Different strokes for different folks. I got 80+ hours out of Borderlands, but couldn't get anywhere close to the 100+ hours people got from Skyrim. Length alone is not indicative of a good or even great game.

Obligatory

You know. Rather than a bad thing, I see this as a sign of games improving.

And the fact is even most games rated 6, actually have more than a dose of good fun involved. And most games aren't released if they're broken, and I can't see a 1 being a justified score unless a game was broken and actively unenjoyable.

I am not saying it's entirely balanced, maybe a bit more spread to take into account the times, but I think by marking something a 6 or 7, it's saying "this isn't a waste of money, it's just not as honed as most AAA games".

This is how I came away from it.
I didn't care much for i1, but I got a lot of enjoyment out of i2/FoB, so SS will be right up my alley.
I more or less figured it'd get dinged for essentially still being an infamous game.

This sounds exactly what I thought it was. A solid, not spectacular game. Sounds like an excellent weekend rental.

Reviews are dumb. I find they hold very little relevance. And I have no idea why people hold reviews to their heart. They're merely... opinions.

Resident Evil 5 was shat on. It's really not as bad as suggested.

GTA 4 is considered one of the greatest games ever. It's bloody awful.

Darksiders II is one of the best games I have played (currently playing the game, 23 hours in, no where near completion) and was only rated 80 or so on Metacritic. I'm amazed really; Darksiders II has incredible depth. It's an improvement over the previous game in every way possible. So many dungeons, brilliant combat, loot system, and RPG levelling up.

I imagine Infamous SS is likely to be a more enjoyable experience than perceived.

I've gotta be honest, I have began to enjoy games so much more once I stopped caring about reviews. I can't remember the last time I let a 'review' dictate my purchase or enjoyment of a game.

This is a good indicator to stop reading reviews from a) Eurogamer b) the reviewer in question. Reviews are subjective things by nature, you need to find a group or reviewers that fit in closely with your own sensibilities.

for the record I hated GTAV too

Eh I dont like long games at all... they tend to be incredibly repetitive, especially long RPGs...20hrs is my max sweet spot...so two run throughs one good and one evil for 20-30hrs sounds good.

Bro five...love that game...has some issues especially near the end, but so damn good

It's reviewing about where I thought It would. I'm more surprised that Polygon is in the middle and not on the lower side of the spectrum.

Good summary I say
Infamous: Second Son emphasizes the series' strengths in its debut appearance on the PlayStation 4, easily trumping previous Infamous games while showcasing the power of Sony's latest console. In the process, it drastically overhauls the series' defining elements, stripping away the weaker parts and focusing on what works best. If you found previous Infamous games more frustrating than fun, Second Son's gleefully destructive superheroics will win you over as a fan.

Honestly I'm floored by the work Vigil have done with Darksiders II. The level design is PURE genius. This game should be rated 90 minimum. :P

Also, it is one of the few games where the side missions don't suck.
