Infamous: Second Son Review Thread

Well when the game is not going on all on visual effects from the powers, it can look pretty dull/bland sometimes.

Can't say I agree with that, the city itself looks well realised along with the pretty amazing lighting and atmospherical effects going on. It just looks insanely good once the action kicks up.

Now I'm confused to what Next Gen gameplay is..

AC4 has last gen gameplay
NBA2k14 has last gen gameplay
Dead Rising has last gen gameplay
Madden has last gen gameplay
Battlefield 4 has last gen gameplay
Need for speed Rivals has last gen gameplay
COD has last gen gameplay

So why exactly is a sequel getting docked scores for having the same gameplay as the original game. What difference does there need to be besides having different powers, which was never in previous games, a different story line different from the the last 2, a different set list of moves, other ways to navigate the city etc?
Exactly.

I honestly don't see any exclusive slated for 2014 breaking 90. The only AAA game I can see doing that is Destiny, simply due to scope and Bungie's "seal of quality" that gets reviewers all starry eyed.

Agreed, unless E3 has some new announcements then I don't see anything in 2014 hitting 90's.

Can a cross-gen game be next-gen?

Also, Brink says hi.

Cross-gen yes why not. Even old-gen can feel next-gen (i.e: The Last Of Us, no console game reached this overall story and character development and world detail before, plus small things like the context sensitive melee system, remarkable AI etc...).
Fair point about Brink but was it really successfully implemented?

Not specific to Second Son but if reviewers are going to bang on about "next gen gameplay" then they better start clarifying what they mean because in my experience 99.9% of gameplay in 99.9% of games today is variations on mechanics that were laid down before the majority of today's gamers were probably even born.

Is short - if you can't be clear about what next gen gameplay is don't try and relate it to a game as some form of criticism because it's meaningless. Well TBH the term "next gen gameplay" is meaningless as it cannot - so far as I can see - ever have a clearly defined context.

Sometimes games will surprise us with new stuff - rarely does it relate to the actual hardware (Wii Sports and stuff requiring specific input aside of course which is a minority of all games anyway) and in most cases it could easily be supported on earlier consoles too if someone had thought about it. In short new consoles don't mean new gameplay and reviewing games as if it does is truly odd.

Just note the flaws and if you have to give a score so you get on metacritic then assign a score that relates sensibly to the content of your review. Job done and we can get on with things as normal.

Specific to Second Son though did EDGE really see the graphics/engine as lacking? That sounds like a true outlier right there if they did. Will have to read the review I guess.

I guess some reviewers thought it felt like more of the same.

Metro gave it a 6.
I think hes a sessler clone

The graphics are a great advert for the power of the PlayStation 4, but in terms of gameplay and story this hasn’t moved on at all from the previous generation.

To be fair it is Metro. They would get a 1/10. Not even fit to use as toilet paper to be honest...

Because it had THE AUDACITY to call itself next gen!!!!!!!!! >:O

Infamous has never been a hit by consensus. People who like it really like it, but it's not a unanimously beloved franchise. That, combined with the fact that sequels that don't deviate extensively from their predecessors usually get lower scores even when they are often objectively better games, makes ~80 metacritic fairly unsurprising.

After KZ: Shadowfall, I'm going to play the game before criticizing any of those low reviews(because the low reviews were right in the case of KZ)..
Exactly, considering 99% of people here haven't played it. I know people were hoping this was going to be a top tier game, but how can you be mad at aggregate reviews? Most of the time the meta score is pretty bang on.

Can you cite recent games you have played that define nxt generation gameplay, though? Because reviewers cannot.

because there aren't any. i haven't seen a single game recently that brings something new gameplay-wise. it's all stagnant, samey. which i think is a perfectly valid complaint. with this new hardware, i don't want prettier graphics. i want new, revolutionary gameplay mechanics, but devs seem to think that making a game prettier makes the game better. SS looks like it plays exactly like the first two games, which turns me off so much.

Agree. I really wish those sites were excluded from Metacritic. On both sides they usually are at the top of the scoring list.

Mhmm, if you have the system/companies name in your site name, then you should be excluded from being added for exclusive games. But alas, they end up not helping the average too much when all is said and done. If anything, it just makes people look at them and take what they say with a grain of salt like I do.

Not to say I even really give a hoot about metacritic, but still, it's a bit funny/odd.

There are the facts of my life: I really enjoyed inFAMOUS, the original. I absolutely loved inFAMOUS 2 and Festival of Blood. If inFAMOUS Second Son is a better game than the previous 2, I am going to be in hog heaven this weekend, reviewers be damned. This game is why I bought a PS4 at launch. I knew there would be shortages of the system and didn't want to take the chance. Glad I listed to me.

Please dont ban me for asking this but why is Sesslers Review even listed here? How does this guy stil have ANY credibility left after his Twitter meltdown and still being pissed for not getting a free PS4 before launch?

Im just getting frustrated with that guy. I seriously dont understand how he gave Titanfall a 5 (which is graphically underperforming, framerate is dropping etc.) and Infamous only a 3 which is graphically an amazing looking game, has fantastic acting / face performances and a great story.

Oh, you've played it?

Recall the first moment you played Super Mario 64. How did it feel compared to the previous generation of gaming.

Or a more recent example, Gears of War.

Second Son seems to lacks that.

Both are new ips essentially. 3D mario is damn near a different genre than 2D mario.

Its not a far comparison.

Infamous was always going to be infamous with a new coat of paint.

Im interested to see what these reviewers have to say about batman and Assassins creed unity.

I don't think anyone's having a meltdown. People are commenting on some of the criticisms of the game, and there are people who have played the game on GAF who say those criticisms aren't valid. Basically just disagreeing with them.

But sure you could call that a meltdown, like you could call Infamous a B-tier series. You'd be wrong on both counts.

Infamous is a B-tier series. I would even argue it's C-tier, because it simply just is not a series that has been crafted particularly well. It's extremely repetitive, and not always in a way that continues to feel fun over time. I would honestly suggest if you've never played Infamous before, this game is a MUST purchase, as the gameplay is going to feel very fresh and you'll have a lot of fun. If you're like me and played through the first one and quit the second one because it was just more of the same, avoid. That's how I'd phrase it if I were reviewing this game.

Earth Defense Force is a D-tier series, but one of the most fun things I've ever played.

Object lesson: Not everything has to be A-tier to be fun.

Show me an infamous game with a crappy plot. I have yet to play it.

Crappy might have been a strong word here.

I always dislikes the morality system in the series and how it fits together with the main plot, too black and white for my taste. And it seems Second Son follows suit on that account as well.

Read the reviews, forget the scores and Metacritic.

Pick a reviewer you trust and read the review but play it and decide for yourself.

FFS, its not difficult. This comparing games review scores is pathetic and attacks on a reviewer is nonsense. Just say "I disagree with that" and move on.

if you enjoyed the first two infamous games and this one is an improvement then your getting your moneys worth. i don't think anyone expected to see a Last of Us scenario.

Funny how the people and sites who are giving this marked down reviews because of the repetitive nature and no side missions are the same people who gave high marks/praise to titanfall despite it being CoD with wallrunning and mechs, no singleplayer and repetitive FPS action.

lol

...says the man with the Titanfall avatar. ;)

just having some fun. no disrespect intended.

just learn that you don't need to shit on other games to make yours more fun, just a friendly advise you know

Mario is not a new IP.

Another example: Metroid Prime. Those are the types of games that evoked true "next-gen" feelings.

This post is E-tier. I mean, I respectfully disagree. Infamous 2 was fun from the start to the end for me.

Good scores overall. Hope they make a new IP next

It would be great if every aaa project wasn't trying to create a franchise. I think thats why tlou succeeded, although, knowing Sony I'm sure there will be a Tlou 2 and 3 before it Ascensions and dies out.

right on!! In case of Battlefield 4, Bad Company 2's gameplay was actually better

Okay, but why ding a single game for a complaint that is broad to every game released so far? There just isn't consistency in the review process.

I will just say for the record all I wanted was a prettier InFamous so it isn't like reviews mean anything to me, I literally just do not understand this juvenile industry.
